Lets say NASA (or whoever) finds something really (really really) valuable with one of its probes (say the pathfinders on Mars etc), should they claim it as property as their country?

I've considered that countries with either no financial/technological hope of sending their own probes or countries that couldn't be bothered to do so initially would raise a good ruckus, claiming that it should be "shared by mankind". However, it's not like they did anything to help.

Or perhaps they could run a setup like medical patents - the discoverer gets exclusive rights for a few years (decades, centuries?) and then they lose the patent. Or maybe the discoverer gets a majority percentage and the rest of the world gets a smaller cut.

Oh I misread the question... who "should" it belong to. Erm, whoever finds it first I guess. If they want to share that's up to them.

I think we should leave all our concepts of economics and property right here on earth. Whatever we may find out there, it belongs to everyone (and no one). Its a bit like international water.

If we let corporations, people or nations claim property in space we will be opening a huge can of worms once we're technologicly advanced enough to go out there and try to claim that "property".

I recall this being mooted earlier. I argued then and now that unless you allow the guy who finds/colonises stuff to keep it then there is precious little incentive for doing it at all. And since space exploration is our only strategic fallback when Mother Earth inevitably has a grand catastrophe here, we NEED space exploration.

So I say let people get all greedy. Greed is a great motivator.

Greed is how the world work and what motivates the human race.  Your idea there is nice, but has no place in how the real world operates.

an outmoded and archaic style of thought.

Only if said "human" has no control of itself.

If all you're looking at is the meat, then you'll always be wrong.

Animals are controlled by their instincts.

Humans control their instincts.

So, Hades, are you a human, or just an animal?
