The really weird thing is that I've probably played the game for 2 hours.. of which I've probably had control of my character for 30 minutes while the game has practically played itself (unless you count running from point A to B in narrow corridors as playing).

 

Japanese RPGs in general are more about telling a story then their American counterparts, which are more about letting you create a story.

 

You think playing two hours and getting to play 30mins is rough?

 

Pick up Xenosaga... Over 14 hours of movie scenes, and maybe six hours of actual gameplay. :blink:

 

(Epic story however)

 

If you haven't liked the jRPG format up until this point, you probably won't find Final Fantasy X all that great (it's nowhere near as good as other jRPGs anyways).

I have to agree with Volourn.  Bioware is pretty much dead now.  Deals like this kills development studios.

I'm not.

 

I've just never felt that that Final Fantasy X was the pinacle of jRPG storytelling.

Games I felt that were a lot better during the FFX generation...

 

Xenosaga I & II, SMT: Avatar Tuner I & II, SMT: Nocturne, Suikoden III... just to name a few.

 

Not that FFX is not a good game, it's up there on the Final Fantasy scale (one slot below FF7 and one slot above FF5), I just thought the story was a bit plain. Strangely enough, I thought FFX-2 was better.

 

EDIT - La~ I'm closer to a Xeno- game fanatic btw. :)

If you read the underrated thread he's mourning the loss of the Xenosaga series (as well as waxing lyrical about it) :)

 

Since the never felt the need to release the first part in Europe I've only seen the five hour movie in english.

 

Still havnt gotten around to playing part II since it dosnt look like the sort of thing that you can squeeze in when you have a spare half hour.

 

SMT are great. Pokemon with Demons instead of cute critters. But storywise not a patch on the FF's.

 

No logical explanation for FFX-2's story being better than FFX, thats just puzzle. Did prefer the job system though.

Yeah, you also have to have a good understanding of the Xenosaga plot to truely enjoy the game. The Pal version only comes with a DVD of the first games movie scenes (8 hours and still does not cover everything!) You will probably have a hard time understanding everything. There are some great online Faqs though, and the game is $20. Great bargain if you ask me. Great music, innovative gameplay and a very touching story.

 

I can't really agree with the SMT to FF comparison you made. Not all FF games are created equally. ^^

 

But yeah, I'll agree that some FF games had much better stories then some SMTs.

 

I would have to say the Avatar Tuner series does indeed trump FFX though... Great storyline, awsome gameplay with real actuall thought having to go into your actions.

 

FFX was a cake-walk, plain and simple. I beat the last boss with 3 hits for the love of god... Could that game have been anymore easy?

I thought FFX-2s plot was really great. Not to mention how it was definitely something new to actually play a non-typical FF male hero once again. I loved the music (bought the OST) and the gameplay was really a huge improvement.

I was thinking more of the recent ones VII onwards.

 

Thing that sticks out most about SMT is the encounter rate.

 

You may be right. I'm not familiar with it.

 

The same is true of any RPG though, if you level up enough. If you are talking about the very last boss (no spoilers since Mkreku is playing it) then I beat him in a single hit :D

 

The "other" boss, was a different story though but I had no break damage or break HP limit items. The extra content monsters are MUCH harder than anything in the storyline.

 

Might have to look into that :(

  1. The reason why Drizzt is interesting is because he's a Drow that defies the stereotype.  It doesn't just make him a "funny shaped human" though.
     
  2. There's some truth to what Volourn said.  People are fascinated with characters that go against the norm.  I can't think of too many memorable characters that perfectly fit into the stereotype ascribed to them.

  1. From one stereotype to another. Go beyond the stereotype and all the sentient beings of the forgotten realms are "funny shaped humans". In case of Drizzt there's a problem however: He is a male.
  2. nitpicking: If exceptions were the rule and not proving the rule, stereotypes would be memorable. Drizzt also have a very special name to set him apart, even I can remember him, even though he's just a nobody I cut down from BG2. I can think of a lot of characters that have been unique, but CRPG just tend to rely more on stereotypes for the masses and a few (sometimes) unique characters for henchmen or main villains...for deadlines, cost and effect and all those reasons.

Maybe so... FFVI+ (except FFIX) got extremely easy end-game bosses once you were high enough, and had the best equip,spells and items.

 

But FFX was just ridiculous.

 

The option bosses isn't that hard either.

 

... But seriously, if you want a god-like boss to fight... Try Avatar Tuner I... the secret boss is, in my opinion the hardest boss in any RPG... period.

 

Level 99, with all stats maxed out to 99 and It took me easily over 10 tries to beat him (makes FF7s Ruby weapon look like a joke).

 

EDIT - And yeah, SMTs do have an extremely high battle rate...

Umm I thought IX was particularly easy. Although I think I had way more stuff than I normally would since I did Chocobo Hot and Cold to death and found the Chocobo City.

 

From the way it's laid out the final boss of FFX is supposed to be that easy. Tying up lose ends.

 

Anything after Dark Ixion wiped me out until I collected enough ribbon armours. Just for that reason alone I wouldnt call them easy. I never did beat the toughest creature. I just dont have the patience to level for the sake of it to that extent.

 

Dunno about hardest but the one in Skies of Arcadia took me four hours to kill through its various forms. I was seriously underleveled in that game. I'd have probably cried if I lost :(

 

I'd have stopped playing and I'm used to the encounters of most JRPGs. But then I bred a demon that cut the encounter rate and it got better after that. Still very good games if the encounter rate dosnt drive you nuts.

I've just reached the part where I am supposed to play Blitzball for the first time, and boy does the game suck, there's no way around the fact. I can not for the life of me figure out why people rate this 'game' (whatever it is, it shouldn't be called a game in the first place) so high. The actual parts where you steer your spiky haired character through narrow corridors had been a total disaster up to that point, but Blitzball actually sounded like some tactical combat (without blood and gore) that I was looking forward to. It turned out to be some sort of.. mixture between movies and.. crap. Even though FFX was cheap, I wish I hadn't spent a single swedish crown on this game.

 

Thanks for the playing tips, ShadowPaladin and Haitoku, but this wasn't my kind of interactive story at all. I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever find a jRPG that will suit me and not be so horrible that it actually makes me angry while I play it. I hate when that happens.

Your still in the "introduction". Blitzball is tactical, not sure what your specific complaint is there. It dosnt actually matter whether or not you win that particular game (you get an extra cinematic if you do).Did you get the special move on the ship journey ?

 

Sounds like you might be better off just not playing those sorts of games, like me with platform and racing games.

You see, the problem isn't exactly combat, but the sad fact that there was just oo much of it in the game. THe ropleplaying parts were the best and possibly the most immersive in ever, but the las third of the game was just too much.

 

The other problem is that you're a fanboy. We know the type.

 

You're probably right, I am a fanboy.

 

But I would be both blind and stupid if I didn't agree with you on the last part: There is too much combat in the last chapter of the game, but then again, I don't let that ruin the experience of the whole game for me.

 

Anyways, there's too much combat in Torment to, and the second chapter of the game is outright boring, but that still doesn't keep the game from having the greatest story ever told on a computer, and some of the best character development. Bloodlines is like that, just not quite as good, which is why Torment takes first place.

The combat in Torment was even more anal then in Bloodlines.

I'd give it to PST too just because the combat is more varied.

 

Tough call between bloodlines and morrowind. I think bloodlines might be better at the start. But morrowind ends up better where as bloodlines goes downhill if anything.

  1. PST's ccombat was more challenging, more fun, and better combat than BL. Easily.

  1. PS:T's combat is a complete flush out, as all the semi-automatic isometric click and kill games are, but it has one redeeming quality: the spell animations are just plain AWESOME. In BL you actually have to use skill and be within range (melee/brawling).
