TOKYO--Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed that the company is aiming for a simultaneous worldwide release of its next-generation gaming console, the Revolution. Iwata also confirmed that the system will be coming out after March in 2006.

Talking about the Revolution in an interview with Nikkei Business, Iwata stated, "I can only say that it's coming out during 2006, but it will be after the current fiscal year. We hope to make it a simultaneous worldwide release as much as it's possible."

Since the current fiscal year for Nintendo ends on March 31, 2006, it means the Revolution, as predicted by analysts, will likely be released somewhere between April 1 and December 31, 2006.

When asked by Nikkei Business if he has any specific sales figure targeted for the Revolution, Iwata stated that he hopes the console will sell at least more than the GameCube, which has shipped 18.76 million units as of June.

"It [the Revolution] would be a complete failure if we didn't sell more units than the Nintendo GameCube," said Iwata.

The system's controller, which was revealed in September, was the focus of much of the console's buzz. Surprisingly, Iwata revealed to Nikkei that Nintendo's former president, Hiroshi Yamauchi, was not involved in any way with the creation of the Revolution's controller.

Iwata told Nikkei Business that the Revolution's controller uses several different types of technology, though he did not go into specifics. However, he did note that the controller can be used with any kind of monitor, even digital projectors.

Neat, but can it be used with no monitor? Because I don't want to have to get a new bedroom to be able to use the console, as the shape of my room only allows for one setup for my TV/Console, and that setup would make aiming the controller at the TV very awkward. Possible, but awkward.

Ok, so you play while lying down?

I'm getting the impression the the console "centers" the controller at some point when you turn it on. So whereever you hold it, thats the center of the screen in terms of control. I think.

Yeah, I generally play when laying down. Sitting up isn't very comfortable, I need back support, and the paint that my landlords used on the apartment is crap and rubs off on my clothes if I lean back on the wall. Also, most of my console gaming is done either at night, or during days off where I feel so lazy I don't even want to get out of bed.

I'd suggest getting a unit for the bottom of your bed. Then running the cables under the bed to keep them out of the way.

I have to agree with Volourn.  Bioware is pretty much dead now.  Deals like this kills development studios.

...or wear goggles.

If the rev gets released around the same time as the PS3, that could screw it and screw it good. At the latest i would expect Nov 06 as that would give it a good lead into Christmas.

Nah , the numbers in the first year are a fraction of the overall sales. Where the Cube "failed" is they didnt get the heavy hitters out soon enough and their flag game (windwaker) was too different.

If you look over the cube coming soon there are a load more AAA titles to come. Most noteworthy of course being Twilight Princess.

More controller related stuff.

Akihiro Hino, producer of Rogue Galaxy and Dragon Quest VIII, said the arrival of the Revolution will herald the arrival of entirely new types of game. He said he was up for developing an RPG where you hold shield and sword peripherals and even wear a headset, but that this was probably impossible.

Hino's a bit worried that using our hands so much to wave around the Revolution controller might be knackering, though. He said he hopes designers will take note of this, and create games that don't tire people out even after they've been playing for a while.
