I liked the character creation. I liked the beginning. I liked the concept behind the magic system, and the enchanting possibilities using soul gems.

The boring bits just started to detract too much from the game play. There are lots of fed-ex: the first initiation quest for the Mage guild is to go and find a bunch of mushrooms. Which is fine, except it takes about twelve hours (of real time) to get them ... :)

You only need three mushrooms and I found them in less than ten minutes. And that is the very first, basic Mage Guild mission if I recall.

nope, there's definitely four of them (bungler's bane, luminous rusula, hypha facia, violet coprinus)

and to get back on topic, i hope they get rid of the mass amounts of escorting missions (especially ones when you go halfway across the island and only get something like 100gold for doing it) :)

Escorting missions can be fun if they're better developed than in Morrowind. All kinds of oddball travelling companions with weird behaviour and demands could make for some good laughs and tricky quests. It would be nice if you could join a Guild of Escorts (no, not that kind of escort  ) and make a profession out of ferrying people around. Well, I'd enjoy it.

You are a strange and rare bird, Steve.

I prefer the quests as designed for Dantooine in K1. Morrowind may as well have given the character an underpowered motor scooter with a big "L" plate.

(GTA: VC did the pizza delivery theme with more style, class and excitement.)

Perhaps we should just use the convenient: graphic for Morrowind, instead.

Honestly I think I did find the mushrooms in ten minutes the first time. I was told they were South East of Balmora, and I headed South East. It wasn't that difficult.

I think the first time I played, I actually already had the mushrooms when I got to Balmora, since endless hours of RPGing had already preconditioned me to being a total klepto  ; it was the flowers that I had a hard time finding :o"

the flowers are easy enough to get as well. three of them you can get in the clothing store, and the other you can buy off the person who gives you the quest (Ajira is her name i think...)

seriously, you can do all of those first few mages guild missions in about 5 minutes.

i hope there aren't any cliff racers in Oblivion

The mushrooms mission was OK - it was good that you weren't told exactly where to go and had to search around a bit. There's also a nice part where you cross the top of the hills and the coastal lowlands open up in front of you, which for me was the first time to really appreciate the beauty of the game's landscape.

It also helped me to stop worrying about straying off the official path for fear of triggering something in the wrong place and screwing up the main quest. There are games where you have to be so careful about that, but by this time I was getting the feeling that Morrowind was genuinely different.

I think I heard somewhere that the cliff racer issue has been addressed, i.e. they're gone, and good riddance. :( Aside from the annoyance of the things, they seemed uniquely able to cause crashes on my system.

As long as we're talking about the mage's guild alchemy ingredients missions, I liked the roleplaying possibility there, since my lazy cynic characters just walked down to the alchemy shop and bought the ingredients. It's just like how I make an apple pie!

I heard the cliffracers were annoying and I installed modules that redid the creatures in Morrowind. I very rarely ran into Cliffracers.

So you never faced the Kobiashi Maru scenario ?

Was there a mythological reference to a no-win situation that people used before Star Trek II? I find myself wanting to allude to the KM scenario in mixed company (mixed in that it includes non-nerds) yet I realize that the reference will out me as a total dork. But sometimes it really is the most elegant way available to illustrate a point...

You are indeed ineluctably trapped in geekdom.

Do not fret, though, there are worse fates. Like not being a geek. :)

I really want to find some mythological antecedent though, to be wheeled out on social occasions. I can picture it... "Well, that situation reminds me of a story from the Bhagavad Gita..." although secretly, subversively, I'll still be thinking of the Kobayashi Maru.
