West Side Story had the most annoying songs I have ever heard and a Romeo and Juliet ripoff.

I'd rather have Leonard Bernstein and Steven Sondheim adapting a work of William Shakespeare than Andrew Lloyd Webber, Charles Hart, and Richard Stilgoe adapting a work of Gaston Leroux any day of the week. I think the weight of critical opinion is with me on this one.
