Mod Makers Beware.

Recommended Posts

And that's what they did...see the FULL game...

Not the FULL game with added XXX-Mods made by Third Parties...

I'd say that depends very much on whether it was made by third parties, or simply an unlocked part of the game. Have to wait and see what the investigation turns up.

I have to agree with Volourn.  Bioware is pretty much dead now.  Deals like this kills development studios.

Still, if it was implented by R* there is less to see in that thing than *whenever* you turn your TV on, or just watch commercials on bill-boards out on the street and such...

Hopefully if a big storm brews over mods we'll be able to buy some time with something like a (somewhat obtuse) "Game content may change when user-modified!" label on the box or something. I think mods are probably under the radar of Senate geezers and their constituents right now and I think we should probably try to keep it that way - as in, don't publish any more articles in gamer periodicals - otherwise we're just fueling the hype ourselves. :shifty:

Although, really I'd think parents would be more upset about their kids being called a bleeding clown c*** over X-Box live while sitting in front of the living room TV. It's not like little Johnny isn't getting pornography on the computer in his room as it is without installing some obscure mod for GTA.

That isnt the point. The point is if they broke the rules they get punished and there are a lot of people lining up to have a go at RockStar for whatever reason.

Point broken rules: NOPE, since IF it already was included, it shouldn't be made available. If some modders do that it's not R*'s fault.

It's like blaming Obsidian IF the restoration project "interpretates" some of the holes with 12+ material (the age-restriction) for Kotor2, or if some of the scrapped parts being restored are 12+

Punishment: Hope not, just because some stupid American Politican doesn't know the term "MOD"

Lining up: Ah, morons, great... :shifty:

They are simply going to say if you never intended it to be seen why was it left on the disk?

Besides they have already denied they were responsible so if it turns out they are , they are basically screwed when it comes to any sort of defence.

It could have implications for things like the restoration project. Or even games like NwN which are intended to be mod friendly. It's just a case of seeing how this gets dealt with.

I'm sure they know the term now.. But politicians dont like the idea of things free of responsibilty, they need to blame someone.

I can't believe I'm defending this but...

I don't think this mod creator did anything wrong.

It would seem this was ALREADY in that game and all he did was turn it on.

... And neither did Rockstar, because they didn't put it into the game.

To get the mod, people are going to have to willfully and purposely download it; that act alone means that it is not part of the gaming package, but a seperate transaction.

Case closed.

It's irrelevant whether or not the minigame was included in the game. It was not available without modding, which at any rate makes it a mod, as it requires third-party code. Does it matter whether they included the moaning or not?

That's what I meant by "pussies lobbying against games that are not PC".

The crime? Introducing a sexual element in a society that is sexually repressed to the point of suppuration.

The games are not the problem. And to a certain degree, neither are the politicians. The problem are the retrograde rednecks that allow themselves to be whored into claiming vehemently that 2 + 2 = 5 while they bang their chests. Finally, the Ministry of Love is superfluous.

Well, if it needs a MOD to be installed in order to play, I can't really say you "just have to turn it on", it includes some serious hacking, or so it seems

And about the case of but why don't remove it: Every game has things, if on disk, or drive, that are not going to be used. So why should explicitely R* remove things???

Unlikely otherwise RockStar would not be going out of their way to deny it.

Which brings up a point of evidence: were the elements of the sex game really included on the CD with only a simple "switch" needed to unlock them? A near equivalent of putting a "sex=1" in the .ini file? In that case I would be tempted to fault Rockstar for trying to backdoor something past the ratings board rather than simply not being very careful about what files go on the DVD.

What I'd be worried about, like the original article, is a moral frenzy breaking out over this and getting bad laws and legal precedent created that would make companies somehow responsible for user mods. That's kind of the doomsday scenario here.

Well thats one of the things this may lead to. A much stricter control on unused content for "easy modding" to get around the ratings rules. As I recall when Carmageddon went on sale there was a code on the official website to turn the green blood red. Really couldnt see that happening these days without some serious wrist slapping.

It's probably not too difficult to prove a case that certain content makes these questionable mods easier to make. For example without the content on the KOTORII disk, the restoration project would be a total non starter. As such it's probably not beyond some legal eagle to argue that the inclusion of that content contributed to whatever mod comes out. It's interesting in that the restoration project is equally likely to up the rating that KOTOR II got, only in this case it's not a game likely to get noticed (since Obsidian isnt under the same sort of scrutiny RockStar is).

Lucas Arts on the other hand is a different matter.

Okay, but that is a slightly different legal point. If Rockstar put something in the game and hid it to get around the rating system, then they are rorting the system and need to be punished.

If some modder puts something in their game, not only is the developer/publisher beyond litigation, but (as the modders are just fans doing their own thing) so are the modders. They aren't selling the mods. It's the equivalent to rating private websites for pornography; something that can be done by AOL, but nothing to do with the government.

You'll end up trying to rate mods, and that's more difficult than preventing pr0n on the internet ...

Then why deny it ? This is a company who's response to someone saying you can suffocate people with a plastic bag (manhunt) was so ****ing what.

Because it is not of them?

Anyway, I also fail to see what is so wrong with a little sex-game in a game with [sarcasm]LESS CRIMINAL ACTS:

1) Killing cops

2) Killing innocent pedestrians

3) All possible crimes with Car Driving

4) Drugs dealing

5) Pimping people

6) Picking up a Ho and do Hot Coffee in the car (also VC and III)

7) Kill other Government employees (Ambulance, Firemen)

:shifty: Killing like a 100 gang members per block

9) Grand Theft Auto/Plane/Bike

10) Many, many more

We were in a hotel room with Rockstar yesterday. "Hot Coffee" was neither served nor offered.

As a System Administrator/PC Technician I would like to chime in and clarify the issue surrounding this mod.

I have installed this hack. All it does it flip a 'flag' in your save game file. When turned 'on' this flag opens up the mini-game. There are NO other modifications to files that need to be make then the save game hack. Thus it

Also, this will just give the gaming anti-violence advocates more ammo to use. i.e. 'Look they lied about this... what ELSE are they going to lie about?'

Anti-Violence???

WTF has Anti-Violence has to do with all of this?

It's like stating somebody becomes Totally Postal and kills everybody because of the Sex-part of a James Bond movie...

If they use the "They lied about Sex-game in SA" to say games cause violence, they must be Incredibly Stupid...

It's called a joke? I didn't see SP take offense to it.

Considering you're supposed to be "official" you'd think you'd avoid flaming someone. I bet you'd have banned someone over at Bioware if they made the comment you made, or at the very least edited their post. Hypocrite.

anti-violance, pro-family, anti-p0rn... whatever. With those TYPES of groups, Rockstar lying will give them ammo.
