Kaftan Barlast Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Isn't that CS' infamous Arctic Warfare Magnum? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes it is (only the caliber differs a little), and you've clearly played way too much CS if you recognize it from there. the AWSM fires the much more powerful and accurate .338 Lapua Magnum round that is much smaller size 8.60x70mm vs the 12.7x99 (.50 BMG). It is the perfect extreme range anti-personel round as the .50 BMG is an anti-material round and less accurate due to the lack of match grade ammo available. As can be seen here, its ballistic range characteristic is near that of the .50 BMG And it packs one hell of a punch compared to standard 7.62(.308) DISCLAIMER: Do not take what I write seriously unless it is clearly and in no uncertain terms, declared by me to be meant in a serious and non-humoristic manner. mkreku Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 *some people say that there are minute differances between NATO 5.56mm and civilian .223 Rem that makes it unstable/difficult/dangerous to use the military ammo in civilian rifles. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, the difference is only 0.01 mm (the standard civilian ammo is actually 5.55 mm) but apparently that is enough reason for some older guns to explode. Also, the PSG-90 is a sniperrifle while the other Arctic Warfare weapons you guys mentioned are marksman guns (as far as I know). A sniperrifle is used to wound soldiers (or kill, if the target is an officer) with great precision at very long distances. The marksman rifles are used to blow holes in car engines, and other assorted material destruction. This is also the reason why most normal handguns use 5.56 mm instead of higher caliber. It isn't difficult to kill or wound another human being, so why carry more firepower than needed? It's much easier to carry 30 5.56 mm rounds than 20 7.62 mm rounds. Kaftan Barlast Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Also, the PSG-90 is a sniperrifle while the other Arctic Warfare weapons you guys mentioned are marksman guns (as far as I know). A sniperrifle is used to wound soldiers (or kill, if the target is an officer) with great precision at very long distances. The marksman rifles are used to blow holes in car engines, and other assorted material destruction. The only anti-material rifle in the AW line is the .50 version, which is very rare. The AWSM uses the more powerful .338 LM ammunition for increased range and accuracy over the 7.62mm. It is primarily an anti-personel weapon. It was launched after the Swedish military had made the PSG90 its standard sniper rifle so we dont use it. The brits do though, theyve named it the L115A1. This is also the reason why most normal handguns use 5.56 mm instead of higher caliber. It isn't difficult to kill or wound another human being, so why carry more firepower than needed? It's much easier to carry 30 5.56 mm rounds than 20 7.62 mm rounds. The fault of the 5.56mm is that it has no stopping power and very little penetration capacity compared to the 7.62mm. US soldiers in Somalia during the BHD incident were quite surprised that most their enemies kept running and shooting at them even with multiple hits to the torso. Someone hit by a 5.56 will be able to function normally until his internal organs fail from the damage, something that can take anywere from minutes to hours. My MG friend told me that an officer got wounded in the buttock during an exercise but he didnt even notice he was hit, it was not until after several minutes that he noticed as the pain kicked in. The 7.62 will drop the target instantly and it has no problem penetrating soft cover. But only a small percentage of soldiers in wars die from bullets and given the fact that you can fight longer with more ammo, the 5.56mm makes perfect sense. You can keep the enemy pinned until artillery or armoured support arrive to finish them off. Bytor Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 I assume you are using the term "gun" losely, as we all know that a gun is an artillery piece "I tried the most potent Noise Amplification spell once upon a time. mkreku Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 The fault of the 5.56mm is that it has no stopping power and very little penetration capacity compared to the 7.62mm. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous.. You're basically saying you can get shot several times by the same ammunition that the serial killer a few years back used to kill a bunch of people in Washington. Remember that? He and his young cousin (or something) were hidden in a car and kept shooting innocent people. One shot.. You'll be needing stopping power everytime you need to take down a charging moose (called 30-06 in Sweden, same as 7.62mm), but not for neutralizing a human being. Also, depending on what ammo you use (full metal jacket, hollow point, different gunpowder types etc.), you can basically shoot through any body armour availible. Very little penetration? It's a high velocity weapon using mostly full metal jackets.. The Swedish army uses full metal jackets in wartime because the aim is not to kill the enemy, just to take him out of combat and wound him. A wounded soldier takes 2 other soldiers to help him, creating more hassle and work for the enemy. A dead soldier is just that; dead. And yes, you've indeed played too much Counterstrike if you believe that people getting shot several times and still keep running is the normal case. Walsingham Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 I guess ther is a geeky element to guns too.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So, the fact that we're discussing guns on the pen and paper section of a computer RPG website during the wee small hours of our respective timezones didn't tell you we were geeks? And the 5.56 versus 7.62 thing? Like the man says this is just bloody silly. It is like the theory that the ww2 Japanese rifles wouldn't kill a full grown white man because the bullets were too little. A 5.56 round at most combat ranges will tear into you, become unstable and whip around as it travels through your body. In addition, if it hits any bones on the way fragments will go off in all directions, lacerating nearby soft tissue. Finally, if the round exits near somewhere soft, bit of you can get sucked out after it. 5.56 is plenty of bullet. The only bullets you really should worry about needing to shoot the guy several times are dinky .22 or .32. Interesting story from your friend, but with all respect (and I mean it) I would suggest that either the guy they were shooting was high as a kite (very common in militias across africa) or they simply didn't hit him as many times as they thought. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. RIP Hades/Sand/etc. Here's hoping your next alt has a harp.
