I made this after reading the thread about Class Structures of having a Padawan, Knight, then Master type thingies.

How do you think the training Jedi thingy should work for K3?

Here's a brief extension on the poll options:

 

K1 Style: No Training, pickups only

Pretty obvious - you meet Jedi and they join your party for some reason the writers make up

 

K2 Style: Conversations then *POW*, a Jedi.

The same Insta-Jedi formula they used in K2.

 

Padawan style: Take on one (or maybe two), and conversations like Obi Wan to Luke.

A bit open here, but one example is that find a guy who displays Jedi-like reflexes and you take him onboard. You slowly train him up maybe with conversations like "teach him Lightsasber skills" or "Using the force for protection", which unlocks the 3 or 4 related powers for level up.

 

Padawan style 2: Start as a Jedi with a Padawan

Very similar to the above options except you are a Knight/Master and the story starts with your learner already. I guess gameplay wise, it's very similar to just starting with a party member who's Jedi but this just means that you don't have to go through your own Jedi (re)training before the planet-hopping.

Definitely the option #3, where the newbies pick up abilities over a longer time period. Perhaps a little bit the same way as the HM sparring is done (except there you don't actually learn anything other than the color of her undies " ).

The problem that I had with K2's Jedi training was that by the end there was little to no individuality among the party members. There was no reason to pick one over the other; they were all Jedi with basically the same powers. I think this took something away from the game, even though the point was to create a 'new improved' force user. I think I prefer the 'pick-up' path, mainly because the Master/Padawan route annoys me. Guess I'm not the patient teacher sort. A flawed character with emotional baggage is more interesting than a lump of molded clay.

I choose#3 ,because it's pretty obvious that your charecters that you train in KOTOR 2 are weak compeerd to other jedi with proper training.

1st of all i think there should be huge consequences of your having an apprentice (lets start by them calling you Master ) - and the process of teaching should be more personalized - the Handmaidens conversation&training technique would do, but then other members of your party should have an opinion about you training someone and it should definetely complicate the plot more than it does now (does it at all? ok, so Atton is a Jedi and has a master now - but your conversations with him hardly change - its as if you opened the door for him and thats it)

The Padawan style. You could make a really great game like that. ^_^

It's not POW and they are a Jedi. Rather that from that point on they train "on the job".

 

They still develop powers over the course of the game and unless you hold back levels (which borders on cheating) there is no instant powerful jedi effect.

 

What tends to be missing is the same sort of training as you get from Kreia or the sort of movie style "training". You never see the Exile train anyone in the same way as Kreia trains you.

 

The advantage of having a single padawan is that the designers can devote for more time to the character.

Other.

 

I would prefer to be Obi-Wan on the prequels: have a Master, become a Knight, train a Padawan.

 

(Maybe have that padawan go Dark and fight them later on. And cut off their arms and legs. And boil them in oil. And stuff. )

One question about "Padawan Style", do you take them along just to train them, or would it be one of those K2 things where they come with you anyway and it's several hours later before you even become aware that they're force sensitive?

 

If it's the former then I would prefer a hybrid between the padawan style and the "POW" style. For example, keep the transformations in K2 exactly like they are, but open training options after you convert characters to slowly build their power instead of giving all the powers of a full-fledged Jedi.

I concur.

 

Though there should be a way for it to work both LS and DS. Say you start with a LS master and are LS yourself, you can stay the path of the straight and narrow, train a Padawan, and have them turn to the Darkside, as you say. Or, you can go Darkside, betray your master(glory!) and then take on an apprentice who later betrays you in typical Sith fashion.

The 1st Padawan Style option, I was thinking of something like Episode I, where you go to a planet (maybe a compulsory first planet to get them early) and along the way you meet this person who helps you and demonstrates Jedi-type skills (granted, not too sure how this would look in a game) and you "recruit" them. So no, it's not like having Atton with you for ages before you learn he plays Pazaak to block stuff.

 

The 2nd options is more like Episode 2, where you start with a basic Padawan who is already a Jedi class. One possible idea I just thought of is maybe have the K3 training level where you're the Padawan and in that short tutorial level you determine whether you're a loser like Anakin or loyal/eager like Ep1 Obi Wan.
