Kaftan Barlast Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 Dear Ladies and Gentlemen! As a very commercially unsuccessful artist by trade, I hereby bring you my latest creation: From the creator of the portrait of Sigmund Freud comes! Portrait of the woman who, in an earlier reincarnation, used to be fully nude but is no longer due to the artists inability to properly paint nipples. It started out as a nude so thats where the enormous cleavage comes from, I got remarks about it from other sources. Its not fully finished, in the artistic sense. I could and have made loads of variants of this and I keep making changes and alterations to them all the time. She's very rough around the eyes but I dont dare to change them becasue its where 90% of the expression is and if I change that I could ruin everything. And if you think it looks "unrealistic" or whatever its because I like it that way. If I wanted to do portaits, Id use a camera. Of small importance is also that she now looks nothing like the original model who was a hindi actress. Archmonarch Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 Rather dark, isnt it? And I find it kind of funny I find it kind of sad The dreams in which I'm dying Are the best I've ever had
metadigital Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 Good work, Kaftan! I like the woman in the portrait, and she does look Hindu (not sure about the actress part, though ... are you sure she's not one of those "performance artists" that need partners or implements). She looks uncomfortable to be in the room with you (understandable because she was naked and you were probably dragging your tongue on the floor ...) I do like the eyes (much better than Sigmund's -- that's in your painting of him, not in real life, of course). OBSCVRVM PER OBSCVRIVS ET IGNOTVM PER IGNOTIVS OPVS ARTIFICEM PROBAT
Kaftan Barlast Posted May 23, 2005 Author Posted May 23, 2005 No, she's bona fide, garden variety, bollywood. And I did this from a photo I found in a magazine and ad libed the nudity, I cant afford to pay real models especially if the finished work ends up looking nothing like the model :D ..and I dont drag my tounge on the floor, Ive done a lot of nude painting in school and you develop a stricltly non-sexual way of looking at nude people when you do that long enough, you just see the skin, the way the muscles are placed beneath it and the way the light falls on it. Although it was a bit strange when I was at a party with this girl we used to paint, the conversation was a bit like -You have a very distinct foot musculature -Thanks, whats your favorite position, btw? I had a teacher who has gone to school in New York and his nude painting lessons were a bit dodgy. The teacher often hired prostitutes and strippers as models and the poses they did werent exactly the dignified, artistic ones you normally see. I had a teacher who has gone to school in New York and his nude painting lessons were a bit dodgy. The teacher often hired prostitutes and strippers as models and the poses they did werent exactly the dignified, artistic ones you normally see. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I sure I could mount a convincing defence of hiring ladies of the night by calling on the precedents of the Masters, years before ... the poses, however, would require a more >ahem< modern interpretation. btw, Are you a fan of Calvin & Hobbes? Watterson had a bit to say about art (not to mention philosophy): The hard part for us avant-garde post-modern artists is deciding whether or not to embrace commercialism. Do we allow our work to be hyped and exploited by a market that's simply hungry for the next new thing? Do we participate in a system that turns high art into low art so it's better suited for mass consumption? Of course, when an artist goes commercial, he makes a mockery of his status as an outsider and free thinker. He buys into the crass and shallow values art should transcend. He trades the integrity of his art for riches and fame. Oh, what the heck. I'll do it. Or how about entering academia: "The dynamics of interbeing and monological imperatives in D1ck and Jane: a study in psychic transrelational gender modes". OBSCVRVM PER OBSCVRIVS ET IGNOTVM PER IGNOTIVS OPVS ARTIFICEM PROBAT

Kaftan Barlast Posted May 23, 2005 Author Posted May 23, 2005 Why, thankyou, Miss Launch. Metadigital> If I understand your question correctly; she was fully and very extensively clad, so much in fact that the only usable parts of her were the face and a bit of the neck, everything else including the hair was covered in heavy garments. That was one of the major reasons that the nude painting failed, there wasnt simply enough to go on and my knowledge of anatomy proved insufficient. Kaftan Barlast Posted May 24, 2005 Author Posted May 24, 2005 Right, I am back and fully awake and now I understand what you meant. And about her eyes, Ive never given any conscious thought to them, I just know that its something special about it. Not having to explain anything, even to yourself, is a benefit of being an artist. But its lots of fun to listen to the interpretations of others, sometimes they even manage to put the finger on that something thats completely right but you never fully realised it yourself. :D ..and you cant say "Gott arbete!", which although grammaticly correct, translates to aproximately "Well performed labour". I know what you mean about other people's interpretation of one's work: I have noticed a corollory to this, in that I manage to (far more often that can be explained by pure chance) add many subtle embellishments to my work, without any overt conscious effort. I explain it as a sort of "subconscious momentum", perhaps analogous to how a athlete can perform a complex sporting man OBSCVRVM PER OBSCVRIVS ET IGNOTVM PER IGNOTIVS OPVS ARTIFICEM PROBAT
