Musopticon? Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 http://www.gamershell.com/screenpop.php?id=8646 After seeing what I think as the best screen ever in PC games, I've convinced myself to buy this supposedly gem-of-a-game. Judging by everything I've seen this ame just oozes atmosphere. And is dirt cheap after these three years. I found it for 10 euros in a bargain bin. A must-buy for myself, but what do you fellow forumers think about this game? I'd like to see some comments, please. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. Morgoth Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 Ohh yes, Undying... I bought it at once when it came out anno 2001 and was absolutely thrilled by it's creepy atmosphere and outstanding content. Too bad the game never got any prestige that it actually deserved, and too bad the game didn't sell very well either. The funny thing is that this masterpiece is from the same developers as from the horrible Trespasser! Rain makes everything better.
Jumjalum Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 Wow that is a nice screenie, I got about halfway through Undying but I never made it to that part. Yes, Undying is a great game and well worth picking up if you like creepy games. I only got halfway through it because I'm terrible at finishing a game before I start a new one. It's a pity it didn't sell very well since Clive Barker might have continued making games, and he rocks. We now bring you live footage from the World Championship Staring Final.
zer"0" Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 Well Musopticon, where do I begin? For starters it has a really great and creepy atmosphere - very immersive... I guarantee that you will have more than a few - "Jerking-back-from-the-screen" scares. Some people I know stopped playing, they couldn't go on. Also the artwork is very tastefull. Nice Victorian style, and a bit old Gothic. Not least The Sound... for me it truly brings the adventure to life. Standing at the top of the stairs, the shrieking wind -- a high-pitched whistle, the clap of a far off shutter. The old creepy mansion creaking and cracking. ... Sudden mad laughter and blood-curdling screams from the big kitchen below, where you know there is no one alive ... Its very spooky. It has a decent yarn, involving an old family, crazy cults and things from the beyond. A very good game, worth its retail price. Though not perfect - At times I was wandering around with no clue as to the next objective, which had me travelling to and fro battling monsters, leading to some irritation. The combat system is a bit quirky too. Some spells are useless and take a bit of practice to use effectively. One word: "Gel'ziabar" With powerful weapons few and far between. Lets just say that it isn't an easy game and you should be prepared for some unfortunate deaths. Actually I should say: gruesome deaths. If you have never been afraid of monsters ... well then you have never seen "The Undying". Which leads me to the monsters and characters... The modeling and animation are excellent. Evil characters look really evil and most creatures are very detailed. It holds up even today and accomplishes its goal: Making you dread walking into the next area, making you wonder what new horror you'll witness. Imho. One of the few truly underrated games. Somedays I just think they don't make games like they used to. ::edit:: I recommend playing the game ... alone ... at night
Jumjalum Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Undying was one of the games featured in Gamespys top underrated games feature, it was number 11. http://archive.gamespy.com/articles/septem...d/index16.shtml We now bring you live footage from the World Championship Staring Final.
Fionavar Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Undying and System Shock 2 are two of the best atmospheric games I have ever played! Deus Ex is probably second on the list. The universe is change; your life is what our thoughts make it - Marcus Aurelius (161)

Sargallath Abraxium Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 ...ya know, I've heard an' read great things 'bout Undying an' walked by it a dozen times or more in bargain bins from Walmart to Blockbuster (hell, I betcha it's still there), yet had absolutely no ambition whatsoe'er ta buy it...mebbe next time I hit BB or WM I will... ...WHO LUVS YA, BABY!!... A long, long time ago, but I can still remember, How the Trolling used to make me smile. And I knew if I had my chance, I could egg on a few Trolls to "dance", And maybe we'd be happy for a while. But then Krackhead left and so did Klown; Volo and Turnip were banned, Mystake got run out o' town. Bad news on the Front Page, BIOweenia said goodbye in a heated rage. I can't remember if I cried When I heard that TORN was recently fried, But sadness touched me deep inside, The day...Black Isle died. For tarna, Visc, an' the rest o' the ol' Islanders that fell along the way

Cool sig. "Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger." - Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials "I have also been slowly coming to the realisation that knowledge and happiness are not necessarily coincident, and quite often mutually exclusive" - meta
Musopticon? Posted February 14, 2005 Author Posted February 14, 2005 I'm happy if my thread encourages someone else to buy Undying. mkreku Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 I remember it was quite scary at times, but the constant loading annoyed the hell out of me. Every room you entered had to load new data. The maps are minimal! Maybe I should reinstall it? If I can find it.. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!
