Hi All

One of my brothers, his wife and 2 kids is on a plane now to Estonia on a fact finding mission because they considering immigrating there. He works in finance and a friend of his already lives there and the company has a branch in Estonia so he will be able to get a transfer

We have done our research and it looks like a great country to live in  if you compare it to the problems he is concerned about in SA which is crime, corruption and issues with failed government policy

But Im looking for feedback from Estonians or people who have lived there. So for example the things that matter to anyone from our family immigrating would be the following

  • is English common, it seems to be ?
  • they part of the EU and aligned to the West, very important
  • what is the crime like
  • what is education system like
  • they are investment friendly and dont believe in nationalization and  old school failed socialism

All feedback is appreciated of course, the good and the bad

Estonia looks really nice. Very clean and organized and free public transport in most parts of the capital Tallinn. Scooters are used for transport for many people.

My brother is staying in whats known as old town and its got a real medieval look to it

Here are some photos, beautiful parks

Tallinn's Old Town is not only medieval looking it is medieval.

It is part of Tallinn that existed already during Hanseatic League era in 1400s

It is common that Estonians speak English.

Estonia is part of EU's eastern block, so they will have different views of things than western European countries. Although it is probably most western of east block countries.

Their education system is decent in western standards.

There is divide between Estonian speaking population and Russian speaking population and current world situation probably has not made things better.

Taxation in Estonia favors rich.

Estonia's consumer price increase is highest in EU, which is important factor to take account if you want to do business there.

current situation has not made things easier

Great feedback, thanks Elerond. Have you been to Estonia?

Tallinn is nice, I've been a few times. I thought about moving a long time ago but it's too cold during the cold months

denver... in march.

our recollection is denver winters is a smidge colder on average than tallinn, but am admitted too lazy to double check. is quite possible our recollections is wrong, but am suspecting if am wrong, is not by a significant amount.

'course these observations ignore the obvious possibility that shady loathes denver winters and would like to go someplace less mercurial with more mild januarys and februarys... and marches.

HA! Good Fun!

We got very little snow recently and the temps haven't been as cold either but after living in both NY and CO, I much prefer the dry cold to the wet cold.

we lived williston, nd for a bit. arid winters, relative speaking. less than a couple feet o' snow all winter.

...

is tough to explain how much difference wind chill makes to folks who are unaware. -20F lows is cold, but when wind chill makes -70F and when such conditions last for weeks on end...

am guessing is all relative.

HA! Good Fun!

So this is a consideration for us in SA, we not use to extreme cold or any snow really.

Estonia's capital  has a working system of these  robots that deliver groceries to peoples houses. They common and all over the place. What a good example of mechanization and robotics making life easier

We were  joking how they would never work in SA, the robots would end up in the scrap yard within  1 day

But they make sense in a first world country with low levels of crime
