haven't played in a bit. was dismayed to learn that upon creating a new character I could no longer create some custom companions to fill out my party till I get the ones I want at the first inn.

 

Anyone know if this is still an option

Of course you can. I Deadfire you can even save and export characters (so called adventurers). Meaning in playthrough 1 you can create character A, export (with all his/her gear if you wish), start a new playthrough 2 and import character A as party member (with the character level you wish - with or without the gear).

 

You just need to go to an inn/tavern to hire adventurers.

The first inn is accessible 5 minutes into the game - do the intro fight and go straight to Port Maje. You can immediately hire and spec a full gang. They cost 250 gold per for level 1.

Who or what told you that you couldn't create custom adventurers to fill out your party? This has always been an option afaik, and I played the game on day 1.
