[3.1] There was an error loading the next map

Question

Posted (edited)
I encountered the dreaded "there was an error loading the next map" bug last night. I'm playing on Steam, on Win10, fully patched with all current DLCs. I'm 40+ hours into the game—I just started "The City Lost to Time," and I just had the vision/dream with the gods. I have saves right before the vision/dream and right after. The ones from before won't load at all (they just go straight to the main menu with the above error). The saves after (just my main character in the hold of my ship) will load, but while I can move back and forth between the deck and the hold, I cannot "leave" the ship and return to the Deadfire map screen.

Unfortunately, all of my saves seem to be affected. I verified my game files, and that didn't fix the issue. I also completely uninstalled and reinstalled, but that likewise didn't fix the issue. Some reports of this bug that I've found online seem to tie it to completing certain quests out of order (for example, clearing out the slavers before being tasked to do so). I did do that particular chain of quests out of order, but that was dozens of hours ago in my saved game.

As I've researched this issue online, it looks like it's been known since 2015 for PoE1 and since early this year for PoE2. It's very disappointing that a game-breaking bug like this remains unfixed. On 10/11/2018, in another thread in this forum, SChin said:

"Unity got back to us about this issue yesterday and gave the Programming team some ideas for fixing these transition crashes.  The programmers submitted their fix and it is currently undergoing testing to make sure it doesn't break anything else.  Assuming the fix passes, it will likely be added to the next major patch.  Keep an eye on the forums for the latest patch notes to see when the fix is implemented.  It is likely to make it into the Beta Patch branch first if you want to play on that branch when the fix is in."

However, I've not seen this in the patch notes (release or beta) since then. Can anyone speak to where a resolution to this bug stands? I'm loathe to restart the game from scratch, especially since I might just encounter this bug again.

If any additional information is needed, please let me know.

Hello GuJiaXian,

I'm sorry you are still getting a load map error.  The fix that Programming implemented seems to not have fixed all cases as I have had multiple reports between yourself and other users who are still getting this to occur.  Would you be able to send me a copy of the save file that doesn't load at all as well as your latest save from the ship?  I want to have the team take a look into what might be going on in this particular case to see if there is something that can be done to get you back on track.

If needed, you can find instructions on where your save files are located here.  The files may be too big to attach to the forums and in that case, if you can send them to me at support@obsidian.net along with your forum user name and a link to this thread as a reference, that would be amazing.

Once we have that we can look into this further for you and keep you appraised on what is going on with this particular case.

Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience this bug is causing.

Both my auto save and my manual save both have the map load error. I really like the game, but with multiple character's saves bugged like this it makes playing the game and even enjoying it impossible. Is there anything that can be done?

Do what SChin has requested and email him your output log and saved games. I have to imagine that the more information they gather, the better chance they have of nailing down the root cause and fixing it.

"There was an error loading the next map" is a very general error that we show whenever anything at all goes wrong while loading the next map.  Fixing one issue that causes this may not fix all of them, so if anyone else has the same error, please continue to send your save files to support@obsidian.net.

@Volibearworkshop: In this case there was a problem with the state of Xoti's companion quest.  I've put in a fix that will allow you to load your save again.  The fix will be in v4.0.

@GuJiaXian: I didn't have any problem loading your saves (character name 'Mariah') on v3.1.1, which is the current Steam version. That version was released on November 8th and might have fixed your issue.

I just double-checked: my version shows as 3.1.1.0023 LAX12ABCDEF -steam. I loaded up an affected save (a manual save I created, with my character standing belowdecks on his ship). I then clicked the arrow button at the top of the screen to return to the world map. Instead, I was returned to the main menu with the usual error message. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and also verified my game cache in Steam.

Ah, sorry - I misread your steps to reproduce. I found the problem in your save and have also fixed it for v4.0.0.

Yeah? That's great news! Will the fix be retroactive? That is, will affected saves be fixed?

I run into this in Satahuzi: if I entered any of the huts, the game would crash upon leaving them. However, I deleted everything from ~/.config/unity3d/Obsidian\ Entertainment/Pillars\  of\ Eternity\ II/ with exception of prefs file (where keybindings are, among other things) and then I could loot them alright.

EDIT: but let me say one thing. The very reason I was in the Satahuzi in the first place is that I discovered that beguiler (my watcher) a) generates less focus than she should when hitting properly debuffed enemies (reported), b) is refunded less focus when AoE debuffing debuffed enemies than she should be and c) is refunded focus when se should not be (both reported),  in other words, that the subclass is hopelessly out of whack, so I thought screw it, who knows if/when this gets fixed, let's go with soulblade even though I use no shred spells and prefer shooting from distance, that subclass appears to be working alright and soul annihilation might come handy sometimes, and started a new game. That is, after I had already restarted from 3.X to 2.1.0 to get around the bug that caused fragments of Blade of Endless Paths not to show on up Defiant. And then I run into this.

I am terribly not amused. *glares silently*
