I can equip the weapon in the off hand, but not in the main hand slot.

Don't think it's a bug.

 

It functions like a torch (and torches can only be used in off-hand, if i recall correctly)

Yup, it has been like that from the release. 

What's weirding me out more, than the fact that it can only be equipped in the off hand, is that the stash stores it in "other" instead of weapons.

It’s a torch offhand only

This confused me too initially until I realised it was meant to be a torch. But why is it a sabre?
