Good call on checking the feedback log. It seems though that Atton never has any problems with these locks.
-
True enough but you don't get Force Crush, which is really the ultimate DS skill and the animation is really funny and sexy too.
-
True, though the signs of overheating are usually graphic artifacts, not a sudden crash to desktop. That said, the crashes only happen with Aurora/Odyssey-based engines so it seems heat is unlikely the cause.

Thanks for the clarification. The error message you posted looks almost the same as what I get on the ATI gpu + Via Chipset, only difference is it always blames swkotor.exe or swkotor2.exe in my case. Hmm, I'm inclined to think it's the game engine that causes the crashing. I also get the pause and sound looping before I get dumped on the desktop with the error. I just completed the game as a DS Consular/Sith Lord on the Nvidia machine and didn't encounter a single CTD so I guess it's just rarer on an Nvidia setup than ATI, or could be just the randomness of it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> i'm leaning towards it being the engine too especially since it is occuring after a certain amount of time. Perhaps it has a memory leak when it is played on a certain combination of hardware and/or software (drivers, etc...) one thing that I forgot to mention is that it seems to crash durning section loads (ie: going from indoors to outdoors or visa versa, boarding the ebon hawk or getting off, etc...) I could say, with some confidence, that it never crashes if stay in the same area the entire time. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I tend to think it's quite random. I have had CTDs like you during transitions from the Ebon Hawk to the exterior or while simply walking around. I also thought about the possibility of a memory leak. The funny thing though is that with a typical memory leak, you usually experience some kind of slowdown and then it crashes. Not so in this case where the CTDs happen so randomly without warning except for 1 second sound looping. I also get these rare CTDs in Neverwinter Nights, whose engine is what KotOR's engine is based on. No other games I play give me CTDs on the ATI.

Out of curiosity, what chipset are you using? What error message do you get with the CTD?

Just completed game as Consular/Sith Lord
MaglorD replied to MaglorD's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I used Force Confusion a few times but it seemed slower at killing stuff, and then you have to wait for the effect to wear off to kill the confused enemies. But I can see how it might get really fun to watch in a big battle -
Try playing DS, it's even easier due to AOE offensive force powers.

Just completed game as Consular/Sith Lord

Consular 15/Sith Lord 9. It was in normal mode though. -
Does anyone know what level of security skill is required to open the locked container in the Oderron Palace? The one containing the silver crystal and bronze double-bladed lightsabre. I had Bao-Dur with something like 24 security and couldn't open it even with security tunnelers. After I killed Kiph, I used his security spike tunnelers and got it open on the second try...whew. I didn't seem to have any problem using Atton in another game and they were similarly skilled in security. Maybe Atton has a special advantage being the security expert.

This was remarkably easy. Force Storm and Force Crush are simply awesome :D

I am just trying to rule the possibility of the chipset causing the crash to desktop. On both Nvidia and ATI gpus, I do get a rare blackscreen but it isn't really a crash because I can still quicksave, reload and all is fine. I believe this is what Obsidian is referring to in the readme. The ATI gpu + Via chipset otoh will, once through the entire game, crash with an application failure blaming swkotor.exe(KotOR 1) or swkotor2.exe(KotOR 2).
-
Anyone here using an NForce chipset with ATI getting occasional crash to desktop, like once through the entire game? I am wondering whether it could be due to the chipset(specifically VIA) or ATI graphics drivers.

Cautionary Statement: Latest Catalyst drivers
MaglorD replied to a topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Hmm weird. I just upgraded from the 5.2(old control panel) to 5.3(CCC) and haven't noticed what you mentioned. In fact, the new drivers seem better in that I'm not getting graphic glitches running at 1280x960. -
I just got an Nvidia 6800 GT Pci Express for my new pc. Some differences: While I cannot play at 1280x960(V-Sync not enabled) on the ATI due to weird graphic glitches, the Nvidia manages it without issue. The ATI doesn't experience this problem with other games. Having upgraded from Cat 5.2(Old Control Panel) to 5.3(Catalyst Control Centre), this appears to have been fixed. With the ATI, I get the occasional CTD, about once throughout the entire game. Nvidia does not suffer from this. It could also be because the new pc uses an Nvidia Nforce 4 chipset rather than a Via. The ATI always resets the desktop gamma upon exiting the game, while the Nvidia doesn't. Have to go into display properties to fix the screen brightness for the ATI, unlike the Nvidia. Both cards do suffer from slowdowns, like at the Telos residential corridor, where the Czerka and Exchange offices are located. The ATI does suffer from rare slowdowns in slightly more areas than the Nvidia. All in all, between the ATI and Nvidia, I am leaning towards the Nvidia being better at least for KotOR 1/2.

There is a room at the Onderron Palace right at the end of one of the two main corridors. I found a silver crystal and bronze double-bladed lightsabre there...very cool. Silver crystal produces a white beam, like an uncoloured lightsabre.

Help for ATI x800 series card owners
MaglorD replied to KillMonkey's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
There is an entire stickied thread already devoted to this. If you're using 4.11, there shouldn't be any need for you to disable any eye candy etc. I play with all the graphics options maxed using an X800 XT PE. -
This is my third run. Playing a LS male Guardian/Weapon Master. I converted Bao-Dur on Dantooine after helping Akkere. He was my first convert, on my first planet after Telos. He's so much better in combat with Jedi training and is very useful with his skills and all. I've just completed the Onderon finale and will be heading to Dantooine. Have already converted all the potential Jedi in the following order - Bao-Dur, Atton, Handmaiden and Mira. I'm maxed LS and all party members are maxed LS too except HK, Kreia and Goto and Mandalore.

Let's not get hysterical. Is the game really so buggy compared to other titles that it warrants this kind of action? IMO, it's no more buggier than KOTOR 1 or Neverwinter Nights at release. Sure there are people who have experienced game-stopping bugs, but I'm not sure the problem is that widespread. While I cannot speak for everyone else, I myself have only experienced a few minor bugs such as the rare CTD, slight choppiness, black screen, invisible enemies, which do not detract from gameplay. The patch they have announced should take care of these in due course. Having said that, I do agree it's lamentable that companies release buggy games. But Oblivion/Lucascarts are no more guiltier of this than many other developers/publishers out there.

Bug - No Influence from Bao-Dur
MaglorD replied to Blarghagh's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Currently on my 3rd run through the game, I managed to convert Bao-Dur on Dantooine, after Telos. Was a little surprised he got converted so soon. If you're referring to not getting influence for the atmospheric sensors, I believe you need high Repair skill or some Awareness. -
problem with seemingly invincible enemies?
MaglorD replied to Salvador's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Yup, it is a bug. I experienced this in the crystal cave where Vrook was being held - just that one spot. One of the Kinrath became invisible and when my companions attacked it, they could do no damage but it did damage to them, not enough to kill anyone though. Eventually I just left it alone. -
Done that with a Guardian.
-
I had the same problem with a sword. Reloading a recent quicksave solved it.

After Darth Nihilus dies and the Ravager is destroyed, we see a video showing Bastilla and Carth. If Bastilla's alive, shouldn't she also be considered Jedi?

Talk to that rodent character in the entertainment sector. He should be able to help you.
