  1. thank you very much. B)
  2. why don't you have a cool avatar or title like the rest of the devs? oh, you mean a question that pertains to digipen... how would you rate your experience there as a whole? were the professors as good or better than your average state college (and if that's the only college you've attended, were you satisfied with their ability to teach?) how much does getting your B.S at digipen cost on average? sorry for all the questions, but i have a couple more: what do you currently do at Obsidian, and being as honest as possible, do you like your job and is it living up to your expectations?
  3. i have a question: since C++ was made to completely replace C, and C++ seems to be used a lot more than C nowadays, is it still worth learning C? say, if someone were to apply for a programming position at obsidian and they didn't know C, but they knew C++ (along with other languages) would you still consider hiring that person? or would you feel better working with someone who knew both C and C++? i guess a second question would be: just how much is C used in the gaming business these days?
  4. holy crap! all the devs just got fancy position titles written under their avatars. i will now go fly a kite.
  5. thanks for the advice. i'll try to keep all of that in mind (that is, if keeping that in mind doesn't push other things out of mind, like with kelly bundy).
  6. that's just awesome, thank you guys very much. i just spent a day (was it saturday? i can't even remember.) at barnes & noble just looking at and browsing through all the different programming books and such. they had a nice variety of books for C++, but it was too bad that i couldn't just start right in with their examples. your advice and those sites will probably save me a ton of money and maybe even a little frustration. thanks again.
  7. hello, i'm going to take intro programming classes starting next year, and i wanted to pick up some books for the summer to give me sort of a head start. are there any specific books tailored towards gaming that you think are better than the rest? or any essentials that you think every wanna-be programmer should read before starting out (such as basics or ones that lay a good foundation)? here are some i've been contemplating buying: for C++: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=books&n=507846 or http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=books&n=507846 for open GL: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=books&n=507846 or http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=glance&s=books and perhaps even a book for dummies on Visual Studio . NET: http://www.bookpool.com/.x/t9j38x78w6/sm/0764516264 also, with everyone recommending forth, i was thinking of eventually checking this out: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=books&n=507846 what do all of you think (besides thinking i'm crazy)? i would be thankful (as always) for any advice you can spare. mr. happy pants
  8. exactly! but, i think i've derailed this topic enough (not by conscious choice of coarse, my ID made me do it). anyways, i just saw that Redstone is going to buyout Midway. i hope that doesn't affect Terry much (or at least not in a bad way). bob knows ladyluck hasn't been kind to blackisle employees.
  9. i meant in real life. i'm usually a lot more straight forward with people i don't know, or am i?
  10. do you ever say "wow, you rolled a 1," (when someone biffs something) or "That's Wizard!" (for something cool) or "That's +5" (for something really cool)? sorry for that, my nerdiousity got the better of me.
  11. yeah, but i usually like to beat around the bush until people get disgusted at me and leave. actually, i'm getting quite good at it.
  12. kKatt, you could say that chickenloversteve is on this message board right now, and that he also says "hi". sorry for all the confusion, i was just seeing if anyone could add 283.09912 + 2.00856X(4--2.014) together to get 4. but, i suppose not, as i don't see many at all from the bgda forums here.
  13. sorry, i think i've mislead you. i never actually worked at interplay or blackisle, i was merely a message board lurker (like most of the people here). when i said that interplay got really boring, i meant that the website was never updated, more and more people stopped coming by (including the devs :D ), and there were less and less reasons to visit the site. so you shouldn't feel bad as i really wouldn't expect anyone to remember me, except maybe shiftygeezer, as we always had very different opinions...umm, chicken...5 dollars? get outta here...
  14. bgda2 forum regular...no avatar...likes to give long winded responses....love is my middle name... anything?
  15. hey kKatt, glad to hear everything is going well for you. interplay got really boring in a hurry after you left. by the way, how's Terry doing? anyway, got to go take a psychology test. :D later, pants_happy (the new and improved c.l.s.....).....
  16. being a designer would be really cool. i'm going to take some design-type classes if i can, just for the sheer fun of it (hopefully design+programming= a gaming machine). but i'm going to focus more on the programming aspect, probably more for job security (and wanting to program AI!) than anything else.
  17. thank you very much, that's some great advice from all of you. needless to say, i now have a lot more to think about. but in this case, i think that is a good thing.
  18. every little bit helps, so thanks for the response. i guess you're right with the degree being the same, reguardless of where you go. there are a few colleges around here (north dakota/western minnesota) that offer cs degrees, but i would prefer to go to a college that's already focused on computer science, rather than go to an agricultural school for a computer science degree. right now i'm attending msum (minnesota state university moorhead), and classes are ok, but it's really not a school for would-be programmers. i guess it's all how you look at it. perhaps the biggest thing for me is that i need a change of scenery, so i'm just shopping around, so to speak. a friend of mine suggested full sail before. i've checked that out, along with a few other colleges, so now i'm just looking for advice from people who've received a bachelor's in cs, and what they thought about their college. oh, and good luck with your last year. working on AI sounds really cool, and right now is probably what i want to do the most too. thanks for the help, mr. happy
  19. well, yes it's management's fault. but that's why it was interplay's time to go, because it had bad management. if the management had been different, i'm sure that the outcome would certainly have been different, for better or for even worse. since bad decision makers make bad decisions by definition, and interplay was stuck with them as management, the only road they had led down. but for eulogy's sake, if a gun was put into your friend's face, and if your friend was shot in the head, you don't analyze the steps they could've taken to prevent being killed at the funeral (or demonstrate to a crying crowd your tae kwon do expertise on being able to snatch a gun from someone's hands), you talk about memories and stuff like that. this thread is titled "good bye interplay boards" not "what interplay did and didn't do", so i just treated it as such. anyway, i do see your points about why it didn't have to die (and i certainly agree with most if not all of them), but it did. and for now, that's all i'm concerned about. pants_happy
  20. the way i see it, just take a moment to look at the members on these boards, or the developers working at obsidian. most of us came here from the interplay boards because of friends, game interests, or just because some people believe that blackisle's/interplay's former employees are the best in the business. it's like going through the light at the end of the tunnel (not to be cliche, of coarse.) essentially, everything that we had that mattered over there is over here now, with the sad exception of a few game liscenses that would never have been used anyway, or a few developers persuing thier own interests or just moving on to better pastures (like puuk to EA). really, the only thing that was lost were the jobs of the interplay employees, which, if you really do view those people to be the best, you need not worry too much about them finding further work. it is a horrible thing for so many to lose their jobs at the same time, at a company we as consumers and friends cared so much about, but maybe it was just interplay's time to go. this is the new and improved interplay/blackisle, created and run by people who really do have an interest in the games they make, and are not just interested in money. interplay and its former employees have gone to a better place. pants_happy (formerly known as CLS...)
