  1. Hi Magena For what sort of work are you looking? See, it really depends on the position. I add some general design tips: Online portolios usually tend to work best to give people an idea of your skills, and an introduction to you, as would a clever printed piece of self promotion. A physical portfolio usually works best for interviews. Although in both cases, it's a good idea to present finished work, it would also be a good idea to save at least one example of thumbnails in case a prospective client/employer wishes to see a sample your development process.
  2. Companies tend to want to be the loudest, heh. As a result, one is often unable to talk with the people next to them. In the year I attended, NWN was still to be published by Interplay, and BIS staffers showed Aurora.
  3. I can always claim that I suffered from heat stroke the one year I attended the e3. Sure, I may have seemed drunk, but it had nothing to do with the drinking....er.. B) Actually, scantily clad ladies pimping games is standard practice at the e3. Oh yes, and it's really really really loud.
  4. Yeah, I'd take a Level / Environment Artist position with extra concept on the side. Although I have very very very little practice in level development, I am trained in Fine Arts (drawing, painting, etc) and I'm certain I could produce textures for objects (training in Photoshop and Illustrator) and terrain.
  5. I agree that the pictures (funeral image, anyone?) added quite a bit to a topic, but I also see the current design of these forums, and it screams "low bandwidth". I guess Obsidian both looks to reduce the load time for people on 56K modems and reduce their costs as related to bandwidth. Oh yes, and then there are leeching scum who would use the bandwidth here to present (steal) the images for their own forums. Without the graphics, Obsidian doesn't need to police that issue.
  6. I can't really say where I came from, per se. I read rumors of the BIS break somewhere, went to Interplay, verified the news, and then posted my thoughts at Warforums (a project for me to practice things). A couple people found my topic there (yaye?). re: Bioware Fanboy You bet I'm a Bioware fanboy. I've been an active member of their fansite community now for years, and even had an interview with them for a job a couple months ago.
  7. IMHO, There is no need to dispute what science proves or disproves. If science can only say that, within the parameters we understand, that the existence of God is not true, then there is always a possibility that the existence of God (or someone/thing along those lines) is true. So, maybe I see the hand of God at work where others don't. Heck, maybe I've experienced the work of those hands myself. I feel secure enough in my own abilities to know that where I might believe an occurance in my life is the work of God, another might see it only as a coincidence. However, even the coincidences, if we suppose them to be coincidences, of my life are recieved from others, or personally, through a series of laws that are based on.... you guessed it... the Bible. I read the Bible, and what I read are words passed through many hands of events that probably would have been impossible for a scribe of those days to adequately depict. But, does knowing the stories contained in the Bible were poorly described mean that the messages of the Bible are false? I think not. Rather, I believe there are messages in the Bible to interpret, that every man and woman takes from it what they may, and that those of similar thought gather together within various denominations, etc. Anyway, I do not usually discuss my beliefs on forums. I've written more here than I have anywhere online, really. So, maybe that's a good thing. I don't know.
  8. Thanks, Fionavar I'll keep that in mind, heh.
  9. I will stand by my example because everything I mentioned about Color Theory can be scientifically explained with the exception of the last three attached lines.
  10. "If something cannot be understood logically and reproduced through research, it is not science." Respectfully, if something cannot be reproduced, it is a theory. here is a theory: The combinations of various medium can create a goop we call paint. We change the hue by changing the medium. We can even mix certain combined mediums together to make different hues. Like science, some experiments of medium combinations work well, while others do not. It is a great theory- one that is taught to us all in elementary school . However, knowing how combinations of mixed medium can be combined to produce varying hues does not explain painting, let alone art. No, some of us continue with our training, and we learn how paint changes when applied to different substrates, how temperature affects the movement of paint on the substrate, how certain paint hues affect people psychologically. Heck, we even learn how to manipulate the viewer to see colors that weren't even painted. And after all of that we still don't know why artists (meaning all artists) paint, we don't know why people (certain people) will spend insane money to buy paintings, and we don't know why painting (overall) is important, but it always was important from the time man thought "I am", to now. Science cannot explain it, but it is true.
  11. Hats off to Craftsman and a few others for noting that there is a really really big question of "why". I believe in God. I see God in the actions of strangers. I have experienced terrible circumstances, and survived them through the aid of unknown folks. Some might call it luck, others might call it coincidence. Maybe I am happy to attribute it to the Hands of God working through the hands of others. My gratitude isn't lessened by my belief in God. I thank all equally. So, we wonder "why" things are true. And, this is a good thing to question. For while we continue to search for "why", science brings us closer to "how" things are true. But, having said that, we still question "why", and we should never be satisfied with half an answer. I suspect the uncertainty is why some people choose not to believe in God. They read the Bible, and whatever other scriptures, and do not find all of the answers. I feel the same way about science. So, maybe there is a connection? Amazingly, the Bible can only answer doubters by stating that God works in Mysterious Ways. To that, I can only add that God does work in mysterious ways.
  12. What? No voices of discontent? *checks*..... oh right! We're not on the Interplay boards anymore I've lurked here a few times since the BIS purge, but I've been so busy that I haven't had time to post much anywhere what with school, web developement, and design. Anyway, It's great to see your community is growing anew here, and if there is anything I can do to lend a hand, just lemme know. Naturally, I will post whatever news is reported by Obsidian wherever it is most logical on our network of sites. *bows to thee, Fionavar*
  13. I think one of the hardest things is to decide exactly what you want to do in the industry, work and learn toward it, and understand that the first place you interview with may not hire you right away. example: I had an interview with a company we all know here. Well, I did not make it past the phone stage, and a big part of why, I believe is because all of my education path leads to another place in the industry in spite of my non professional experience related to the postition for which I applied. Where I was applying for a web related position, my training is in art and design and my future is in 3d modelling. To them, I would have been a gamble because, while I was perfectly willing and content to work in the position I applied for, they saw me as someone with goals contrary to the job description. I could say it's unfair, but I couldn't lie either. I am as spellbound by game art as I was to D&D illustrations as a child, and game art is where I intend to be in a couple years. If not, I will be happy as a graphic designer and professional moderator until that break comes. Chile
