this part is more true today than at any time in recent memory, but still with the hyperbole. cancel culture is utter subjective and as far as we can tell, is the label given when a group exerts economic pressure or violence to end or change a practice or behavior which you (not gd specific) personal find benign or harmless. the cancel culture label is more likely to be attached if the group in question is one which you do not approve. for gd, the seuss thing were cancel culture and deserved to be called out with his mockrage hyperbole... right up until the moment he realized the content seuss chose not to publish were indeed objectionable in 2021. again, the extent o' gd mockrage were the attempt at humor, but the displeasure with what gd perceived as yet another example them trying to unjust prohibit something they do not like were real. and recall, is who gd compared his not seuss mockrage to the massachusetts not-book-ban. unfortunate for gd, the mass. reading list issue were an example o' gd being genuine indignant sans the hyperbole and nazi imagery. am knowing it seems like am picking on gd, but you are simple the most comical overt and readily available example. point am trying to make, and am knowing is being missed, is that cancel culture is some kinda fluid label which people use to condemn them and they. whatever cancel culture is, it ain't new and it ain't the property or prerogative o' the left or the right. prohibition were cancel culture? the moms we mentioned earlier who led comicbook burnings or decades later tried to prohibit d&d were engaging in cancel culture? when conservative viewers went to newsmax and oan after fox failed them, were that cancel culture? every time berkeley students try and prevent objectionable individuals from speaking at organized events on campus, and even go to extremes o' burning the literature o' the speakers in protest, is that cancel culture? company towns were mentioned recent in this thread. nobody forced coal miners to work in the company town scheme. were the movement to end such cancel culture? damn hippies and veterans tried to cancel the vietnam war. how 'bout the civil war, or rather the abolition movement which preceded the civil war? if not, then why not? were fact such efforts to cancel were justified the reason for the situation being different? ... is our pov, cancel culture isn't real, or at least not meaningful. modern media and internet changed the game considerable. people have always been angry and indignant 'bout... something. organize a movement to do something 'bout the shared indignation has been difficult to manage. create a movement to end comic books may not be a particular laudable example, but how does such a thing develop nationwide pre internet or even tv? am suspecting one reason why religious groups has so often spearheaded such canceling efforts is 'cause in the US, religious observation were a weekly event where likeminded people congregated and listened to speeches 'bout morality. dunno. am admitted just guessing as to the "success" o' religions in this area o' human endeavor. regardless, the organization o' shared indignation were, as often as not, extraordinary. compare to january 6 wherein a bunch o' folks tried to cancel the election. late last year, pennsylvania's republican majority legislature passed laws to expand mail in voting during the pandemic and at the time, voter security were discussed brief by PA lawmakers but dismissed. nothing burger. fast forward to summer and trump is already claiming that if he loses the november election is 'cause vote were rigged and mail-in voting (but not absentee mail-in voting) is fraudulent and rigged. by november 4, Congressional republicans and others is citing pennsylvania's pandemic inspired mail-in vote expansion as one o' the great evils which caused the theft of the 2020 presidential election... but not state or fed offices on the same ballot. so, in a few short months you went from crazy-arsed conspiracy theories being spouted by a guy who claims the sound from wind turbines causes cancer, to the actualization o' an insurrection, a mob bent on stopping the electoral college process and possible worse. indignation were always a thing. anybody doubt caveman indignation? the thing is, 21st century media and internet makes far easier to share indignation. capacity to share and organize is no longer exceptional. labor unions and religious organizations don't have a corner on the market in the 21st century. regardless, cancel culture is just a label. doesn't mean anything as far as we can tell. people organize and protest and boycott for reasons both good and bad and have been doing so since forever. nothing new or different 'bout protests and boycotts save for how readily such movements develop nowadays. "If there be time to expose through discussion the falsehood and fallacies, to avert the evil by the processes of education, the remedy to be applied is more speech, not enforced silence."-- Justice Louis Brandeis, Concurring, Whitney v. California, 274 U.S. 357 (1927). the time available to meaningful change hearts and minds before people become radicalized is so much shorter nowadays... and when you got significant numbers o' texans believing the recent cold and snow in their state were fake/manufactured, then is ordinary efforts at education even possible? naughty. terrible strawman. ... there is a fundamental disconnect at work. the seuss estate is not a government entity. they have chosen not to publish six books. is the seuss estate choice illegal in the US, europe, south africa or pretty much anywheres? no? is the choice not to publish fraudulent or a civil rights violation? no? if you disagree with the seuss people and their choice, what is your solution? you gonna get the government to force 'em to change their mind? gd should mockrage over such a suggestion. am gonna assume you recognize and agree is not appropriate for the government to force the publishing o' the six books in question. so if no government solution, what is the alternative? as a private consumer, how does bruce affect change o' a business entity with which he might disagree? if you want the seuss estate to do different studies until they agree with bruce, how are you gonna convince the seuss people to undertake your better studies? what if the seuss people tell bruce, "no"? am not considering it spam if we can get you to recognize the message with a repeat viewing. 22 minute mark. please. as for @Guard Dog and even this you assumed into existence in your typical mockrage fashion. did you have a source which showed the seuss estate were responding to widespread criticism from oversensitive parents? as with your they are all pond scum shtick, you started with your bias and worked backwards from your conclusion. the seuss estate, as part o' an effort to maintain their brand, did a study which solicited response from experts and parents and if we pretend to know details behind the choice seuss inc made we would just be making stuff up. point is this weren't a choice made to quiet pitchfork wielding snowflakes, or whoever peopled your fever dream which inspired your post. it were a business choice. perhaps the choice were made to prevent the inevitable mob gd imagined? dunno. but this time, even though the mob you imagined didn't exist, their goose stepping rage were justified 'cause you agree, in retrospect, that the books is inappropriate for 21st century crumb snatchers? ... well, uh, ok? as for book burning, is an unpleasant us history o' such. comic books were a popular target in the early days o' that fledgling new industry. laugh if you will, but is a mistake to underestimate angry moms. the pro life movement were functional created by catholic women in the 70s and nobody took it serious when it first got started. us catholics were predominant democrat voters before the pro life movement. more recent we suspect you has forgotten the religious groups and their belief harry potter books needed be burned 'cause jk rowling were condoning witchcraft? do a google search if you never heard o' such. with a little prodding, am almost certain you 'member terry jones, the florida pastor who burned a quran or a few such. yes? were big news 'cause it got considerable coverage in islamic nations. us book burnings is not as uncommon as you might think... though the most amusing example which comes to mind may be the following story: North Carolina church plans Halloween Bible burning nothing particular funny 'bout the story says gd and others? well, that is 'cause we left out the paul harvey bit. listen for a bit from minute 22 to at least 26:30. please. this were mlk's final speech. am genuine not certain what is cancel culture. a boycott which a group perceives as ill-advised, unfair or misguided, is cancel culture? converse, a righteous and reasoned boycott is admirable and american? REP. KEVIN MCCARTHY: I STAND WITH DR. SEUSS ...After 6 Racist Books Yanked most o' the time Gromnir ignores the curious triggering aspect o' 21st century cancel culture. is not a right or left thing neither as from our pov both ends o' the spectrum is perpetually aggrieved and just waiting for an opportunity to pantomime their indignation even if they need fabricate a reason to rage. seuss estate? really? am gonna agree that many media sources appear to exist for not much reason other than to feed the misguided rage o' listeners and viewers and readers. yellow journalism were so turn o' the 20th century, but here we are in 2021 and internet and 24/7 tv news cycles magnify the rage and ignorance with fiberoptic efficiency and speed. in twenty years, chances are trump will only be remembered in small ways. he will be the answer to trivia questions or middle school civics exam 'bout impeachment? is perhaps unfortunate in one sense as calvin coolidge and his nativist policies is also unknown by most americans. am suspecting coolidge is more often recalled as the guy bitten by a pet racoon he kept in the wh. predictable, those folks in the heartland didn't recognize when trump repackaged such bigotry. forget means more likely is gonna happen again... and again. HA! Good Fun! ps in our federalist system, the President is not s'posed to be able to do much on the domestic front and we can't blame only trump for making people forget such. circumventing Congress and/or doing overt unConstitutional knowing full well the senate won't respond should not be the new standard for Presidential accomplishment. -

exactly. this story ain't what some folks suggest it is. clarification 'cause am certain gd and a few others ain't getting it. even if the massachusetts story were what gd thought it were, it still wouldn't be analogous or even relevant to the seuss estate issue. am knowing gd and others got distracted by fact the seuss story involves books, which is no doubt the inspiration for the gd goose-stepping and bonfires imagery (his mockrage) but presence o' books don't make for a censorship story. seuss ain't gonna make their zoo book anymore 'cause it includes images which may offend. well, that is censorship, no? no. is not censorship and is not analogous to any censorship story whether is tv or radio or book content. don't let appearance of word "book" in both the massachusetts school opinion piece which mischaracterized school censorship and the seuss estate. is no authority telling seuss they should not publish. is no relevant government action whatsoever. nobody with any power over the seuss estate, public or private, is mandating actions regarding seuss choice to make the investment to continue publishing. heck, there weren't even some kinda spontaneous grassroots movement to boycott all things seuss until the offensive books were removed from circulation. seuss can't remove the books from shelves o' libraries or bookstores even if they wished to do so, and there weren't a boycott or protests save in the extreme small and largely unnoticed singular examples. serious folks, there were absolute nothing to see here in all those seuss stories regardless o' whether the images were appropriate for children or not. if the coca cola company decided to stop making six o' their less popular drinks and the reason they gave for doing so were 'cause o' the particular high sugar content in those drinks being unhealthy for kids, would anybody call such action censorship? would anybody even consider the possibility that coca cola's choice not to make soopersugarrush (not a real thing btw) were at all similar to the mass. school reading list story? converse, the imagined discontinuation o' of sugarrush and the seuss estate actions would be analogous. don't let gd's initial mockrage, or his more recent mockrage at Gromnir chastising, distract you. is a bunch o' yahoos out there who tried to make the seuss story about cancel culture and censorship and there isn't anything whatsoever to justify such indignation. gd makes hyperbolic statements not 'cause he thinks those statements false but 'cause he believes the hyperbole represents a fundamental truth while simultaneous presenting in a humorous way. Gromnir ignores the humor, save to note nazi images is typical a poor choice unless you are laughing at actual fascists or white supremacists, but when the underlying truth is actual a falsehood, we respond. they is not all pond scum. similar, the seuss story got zero to do with censorship. am aware enough to recognize those s'posed underlying truths in gd's hyperbole and point out how all too often his truths is self-serving fantasies. and yes, is self-serving. prohibitions on driving while eating and drinking in nj inspire gd mockrage, 'cause The Government has no business regulating such... or rather, gd doesn't agree that eating and drinking while driving is worthy o' consideration for prohibition. democracy got it wrong in nj and it deserves to be target o' gd mockrage, but gd frames in context o' libertarian principles... when doing so is convenient or aligns with his personal biases. we will leave to others to decide if the mockrage is funny. irrelevant. am only responding to those underlying truths (is how gd has described in past, so don't blame us) gd is promoting with a few o' his mockrage efforts. your outrage becomes mock just as soon as you find out you were wrong... or if you is pushed a bit. welcome to groundhog day for Gromnir; been there and seen that. wanna do the biden thing... again? your outrage over The Government, or any authority, attempting to interfere with personal use and enjoyment o' property rights has not, in the past, been jokes. you has said you were quite serious that you would Kill peace officers directed to take your rusty old chainsaw even if such action were legal under the US Constitution takings clause. matter of principal. so you got a private publisher and they wanna retire their chainsaw to the toolshed, but gd is outraged 'cause he hasn't bothered to consider the solutions and ramifications. is a seuss estate chainsaw and only way to prevent a private individual from retiring their chainsaw is to take it. and yeah, a few months ago you were also wrong. weren't The Government banning books as you suspected based on alt-right radio info. as we noted at that time you didn't bother to check sources. is Gromnir who informed you it weren't banning. you will eventual realize how untenable and conflicting is a few o' your positions is if you engage in a bit o' self reflection. you will recognize just how tidal is your mocking and how such ends just the second you is questioned. groundhog day... again. "sell them, don't sell them whatever," don't mesh with earlier gd posts, and you don't seem to realize the disconnect. if you can't recognize, am not sure how to help you. and am not angry precise 'cause is no government entity telling the seuss estate what to do or how to do it insofar as the six box in question. is why you ain't seeing Gromnir posts analogizing the seuss estate actions to nazi book bonfires. btw, claim no pure ideology is hardly a free pass for transactional defense o' liberties, eh? is our understanding the kerfuffle is 'cause the seuss estate has chosen not to continue publishing the six identified books. gd is once again on the wrong side o' this from where he should be if he were maintaining intellectual integrity, 'cause what is the solution if you decide the seuss books must not only need remain on shelves, but must need keep being published? do you force the seuss estate to publish? does The Government take the six books from seuss and publish themselves? the issue in question is actual one which clear threatens bedrock libertarian principles. we just hope libertarians someday get their act together and decide when private individual rights need be protected and when democracy is evil, 'cause as often as not am baffled when so-called libertarians get their shorts in a twist. is ok not to be sure. given the lack o' specific evidence o' overt bigotry presented by the opinion piece, am thinking is ok to question whether webb were good or bad or the kinda banal mix o' both which is all too common in 2021 and no less true in the 60s and 70s. not have a good answer is reasonable. our problem is the folks who reflexive see consideration o' the question as offensive. the suggestion o' a name change o' a bridge, park or satellite should not result in some kinda partisan divide over the appropriateness o' cancel culture as a matter o' principle. case-by-case. if after due consideration enough people is convinced that webb doesn't deserve to have a satellite or even a toaster oven bear his name, then am ok with such a decision just so long as is well-considered and reasonable. if folks choose not to change name after similar consideration, well then, that is how democracy works, no? the author o' the opinion piece may not be happy 'bout the lack o' a name change, but people should have an opportunity to choose. HA! Good Fun! ps am also believing one needs be conscious o' just how often in history the selective use o' science has been used to justify bigotry. minorities has frequent been put in the unenviable position o' fighting science... naked bigotry in the guise o' science. -

function o' zero remains same whether you call it a number or a poodle. engineers is tending towards practical, so understandable non-issue. am not recalling much debate re:0 in physics department, but we were only undergrad and student athlete trying to graduate in three years, so esoteric were not our focus. babylonian/sumerian sexagesimal makes a whole lotta sense particular from an astrological pov, and for the tween kids you get to say "sexagesimal" and be complete legit doing so. go home and when parent asks what you learned in school you can tell 'em 'bout the sumerian preoccupation with sexagesimal values. growing up is tough and you gotta find the funny where you can. as for a rando opinion piece somewhere regarding the naming o' a telescope which were s'posed to be forever linked with some guy who +90% o' folks needed to use their search engine to identify, am having a difficult time getting worked up or angry... particular if the guy were a bigot. change name o' telescope from "unknown administrator" to the marvin the martian telescope for all we care. get the damn thing off the ground and working. btw, am not a fan o' naming stuff after lincoln neither. yeah, he were arguable the most important President in the history o' the nation, but for all the things he got right, he got a whole lot wrong. discuss the wrongs along with the right is often made more difficult 'cause o' the idolatry which surrounds lincoln, and the idolatry is understandable given all the lincoln schools, parks and memorials which exist in the US. is sacrilegious to suggest ____________ shouldn't be named after linclon? am also not suggesting we change name o' lincoln park in chicago to douglas park. lord knows am not suggesting we don't teach 'bout lincoln 'cause his administration were all too frequent open hostile to indigenous peoples and the Constitution o' the US. should teach lincoln, but should be more fair 'bout it. nevertheless, in the dakotas we grew up with much stuff being named after henry sibley, and those naming choices made us more than a little uncomfortable when younger and embarrassed when older. veneration o' past icons who perhaps never deserved such acclaim should be something 'pon which we reflect, and the curious belief that once named, a bridge, park or even satellite may never be given a new title is a position w/o our support. if is a private enterprise, owner can name whatever they want and then must needs suffer consequences. if is public, then why should 2021 persons be bound by name choices made decades past? perhaps the reason for a name change is bad, but simple fact a bunch o' folks in the 1920s named a bunch o' stuff after confederate generals to scare persons o' color is not gonna convince us name needs remain 'cause such a mistake were allowed to endure for so many decades. the satellite hasn't even been launched, so is hardly having even the silly historical reverence angle. if some rando opinion piece 'bout the naming o' a telescope becomes front page fodder 'cause alt-right radio and fox sudden is fixated on cancel culture (understandable given the dearth o' policy arguments being offered at recent cpac) am a bit concerned, but not so much 'bout the so-called cancel culture. thanks to gd linking, the author o' the opinion piece offered us info 'bout a nasa administrator who appears to have been complicit or instrumental in promoting and implementing anti-lgbtq policies. is info 'bout which we were previous unaware. am applauding fact we know more 'bout a possible stain on nasa and previous us administrations we were only familiar with marginal in the context o' the us space programs. am not particular concerned 'bout the name change demand. again, is a single individual's opinion piece and am not particular concerned 'bout the naming o' a perpetual delayed satellite. however, am understanding why these kinda name choices deserve reflection and consideration w/o knee-jerk adversity to anything labeled cancel culture. HA! Good Fun! ps am kinda serious 'bout the marvin name for the telescope, save for increasing likely possibility the telescope inexplicable fails in dramatic fashion and then there will be the endless jokes about the illudium q36 space modulator malfunction. -

y'know, frakes wasn't a terrible actor, but the tng episodes where he were the pivotal federation character were having a tendency towards terrible. nobody were ever gonna mistake picard for kirk. didn't need have picard make sure the audience knew he weren't kirk. after farpoint, you knew the enterprise captain were gonna be different than tos kirk. in the pilot episode, q parodies an over-the-top 20th century us military commander bit o' cliché jingoism to mock humanity. picard gets to be the rodenberry idealized opposite o' the military commander q is mocking. picard is specific designed to represent a change from the past-- a counter argument for both earth's past (our present) as well as a change from tos. riker didn't have that luxury. riker were the not-quite kirk character. when tng writers wanted an almost kirk, they gave the chore to riker, and so frakes got the angel one and outcast episodes. ... or perhaps we read riker all wrong. is from the aforementioned potop. keep in mind, the actors almost got serious hurt a few times during the filming o' this scene and they even added football style cleats to the combatant's boots to give 'em better footing as they kept falling. genuine realistic woulda' had fight end much quicker and likely with both combatants rolling around in the mud, but if the movie is called "deluge," then you are gonna have wet. we had a bad case o' the flu this year. literal only time we were exposed to people the ten days before contracting the flu were when we went to a pharmacist for a shingles vaccine appointment. were supermarket pharmacy location during the middle of the day. such an appointment were exact kinda thing we had been avoiding for months, but we knew we should not ignore shingles vaccination neither and we knew shingles vaccination would impact when we could get vaccinated for covid-19. so, a few days after our shingles vaccination appointment, we got the flu. not covid, but flu. ... worse, 'cause o' a scheduling snafus, we weren't even able to get our shingles vaccination on the day o' our appointment. am all 'bout appreciating the irony, but such recognition didn't make us feel any better as we were feverish, achy and experiencing chills for 'bout ten days. in our estimation, the most realistic and arguable best movie sword fight. the duelists included multiple fantastic sword fights. off the top o' our noggin, polish films zrodzeni do szabli and potop is also among the bestest sword fighting movies. rob roy is good, but you got two combatants with vast different levels o' skill and tim roth is toying with his opponent for most o' the duel scene. is only 'cause o' arrogance roth loses, which is more than a little cliché. spend 90% o' a film, book or whatever building up a villain as unstoppable, but the villain ends up falling victim to hubris. for comic book fans, am wondering how many times has dr. doom lost this way? *sigh* would be annoying if farmer liam neeson sudden became the superior swordsman in the last ten minutes o' the film. so if you are gonna have a duel, what believable way is there for roth to lose? perhaps a slight misstep leads to a severe ankle sprain for cunningham? that woulda' been anticlimactic if no less improbable. is just not possible for us to rank such an uneven fight, where the superior swordsman for all practical purposes commits suicide, occupy a place o' particular distinction on our imagined "best" list.
