Let's also not forget Peter Molyneaux's last title, Black and White. Fable looks cool, but Mr. M has a history of big ideas that fall apart in the implementation. Originality is only good if the programming and gameplay don't fall by the wayside.

Just goes to show that the Bible contains plenty of stuff that's not exactly deep. "Lazy is bad." "Drunken princes are bad." "Money buys things." "Whoever wrote this likes to hear himself talk." Duh. One of my favorite parts of the Bible is The Song of Solomon.

Sigh. I never said there was no God. I DO NOT KNOW IF THERE IS A GOD HIS EXISTENCE CAN BE NEITHER PROVEN NOR DISPROVEN. You have repeatedly said that you believe the Bible comes directly from God. So what, now only some of it comes from God? What gives you the right to decide THAT? At least you've finally admitted that there are things that no one can prove. Now I wonder if you'll stop trying to "prove" those things. Doubt it. You've been calling people "mentally unstable", among other insults, on this thread. And now you say "only God can decide a person's fate". Wait! I get it now! You know there is a God because YOU'RE HIM!!!
-
Craftsman, can't you even see how totally circular and baseless your "arguments" are? You believe in the Bible. Because it's from God. Because it says it comes from God. Therefore it comes from God. Therefore there is a God because the Bible says there is a God. Nya nya everyone else is an idiot. So I believe in the Vedas. Because they say they are divinely inspired. Therefore they are divinely inspired because the Vedas say so. Everyone who is not a Hindu in MY PARTICULAR WAY is therefore an idiot. Nya nya. Had any good shellfish lately? And how many women do you plan on marrying? How many slaves do you plan on owning? Do you throw rocks at disobedient children?

Well, at least he wasn't doing the normal Afghan soldier thing. Better to rape donkeys than women. Couldn't he find a sheep?

The story of KoTOR could not possibly be hard core sci-fi: it's Star Wars. I don't believe a TOTALLY open-ended world like Morrowind could accomadate a strong story, though I'd love to be proven wrong. And there's a reason "hard-core sci-fi" isn't very popular. It's generally poorly written, has bad characterizations, and is phenomenally irritating on every level.

"sever", I only let my friends call me "baby". And I'm racist against large beings who have knuckles that scrape the ground and green skin, and can only be permanently killed with fire or acid, and therefore you are not in my "friendship" category. Here's a little suggestion for you: if you don't like a thread, you could perhaps possibly NOT READ IT. I know, it's a tough concept to understand. And it may indeed be counter to your innate trollish needs, in which case all we can do is pity your poor tortured self. OK, back to the topic at hand. I had a friend whose attitude was "break my rules and you're no longer my friend." Notice the word "had". He's incapable of keeping friends because he insists that everything be his way at all times. You can think of God as you will; a "friend" who tells you to behave a certain way or he'll throw you out is no friend at all, but a person with some very serious control issues.

An RPG that didn't take itself seriously would be pretty cool. Ice Pirates!

Ooh, a troll! And one who apparently doesn't know what the term "circle jerk" really means! Quelle surprise... Aegeri, would it be correct to say that something that has not been proven, but may be proven through experiment, is a hypothesis, while something that has been proven through experiment and attempts to explain a physical phenomenon is a theory?
-
Chile, Aegeri will probably be better at this than me since it's his job, but science and religion are completely different things. The Bible ansers that God works in mysterious ways. Science doesn't correlate to the Bible, but through scientific research we have discovered that, for instance, energy equals mass times the speed of light squared. That's not mysterious at all; though it may be difficult, it can be understood logically. If something cannot be understood logically and reproduced through research, it is not science.
-
Aegeri, your patience is incredible.

Craftsmen, all those arguments start from the position that there is a God, there is a creator. I've learned them all before in my study of medieval and even pre-medieval history. They're circular. You must take their bases as fact before you can prove them. "Who made the sky?" Interesting question, but not one that makes any sense. There isn't necessarily a "who" involved. It's like loading questions while polling so you get the answers you're looking for. You can prove anything with enough rhetorical mumbo-jumbo. But you have to get people to accept your premises first. That's where you get tripped up; we do not all accept these premises. Why is it obvious that nature is not a mistake? Just because? That's no kind of argument. If you were to outline your arguments in a more detailed fashion, I'd go point-by-point.

Is DnD holding up back from better game design?
neriana replied to Mercer's topic in Developers' Corner
Great post, Lord Daemon! -
I always think we're going to come to some sort of common ground. And very often there's plenty to be found - but very often people are determined not to find it. Besides, I like sharing my opinion and seeing others'; we're far too prone "keep to our own". Either way, it's a great procrastination tool.

Is DnD holding up back from better game design?

There is one thing I am totally sick of in D&D games, and that's the Forgotten Realms setting. It's been used, and stolen, by so many computer games that it's really really old. Oh look another trip to the Underdark (which I think is a terribly stupid place anyway). And everyone crowds message boards saying "is Drizzt in it?" Blech. I would really like to see a new game in the Savage Frontiers and Planescape settings, if they must stick to D&D modules. But why do that? Why not take the rules and use them as a base for an entirely new experience? Or toss the rules entirely? The SPECIAL system has been underused. D&D's good, but the constant use of its ruleset is leading to stagnation. One thing I like about RPGs is learning how the rules work, which spells and abilities are most powerful, and when I pick up a D&D RPG I already know. Only so much can be done within that system, and I for one am rather bored with its ubiquitousness. Further, there's only so much a computer can do with a system originally designed for P&P. I'd like to see more RPGs with rules designed specifically to prop up computers' strengths (like beautiful worlds and complex combat) and compensate for their weaknesses (limited player interaction). -
OK, sorry. I totally agree with the fact that all religious people are not incurious or anti-intellectual. I was just replying to one person's apparent position.
-
How do you know God is the reason there's a universe? How can you be so dismissive of people who don't "know" that "fact"? How can you "know" Jesus died for our sins? I know the Bible better than most religious people I've met - it's a big history/philosophy/law/myth/poetry book as far as I'm concerned, just like the Koran or the Vedas or the Torah. How can you get past the fact that if we were born in India, we'd (probably) think cows were holy? None of this is knowable. In fact, if you have to "know" it to believe it, maybe you don't have enough faith.

Mel used to be addicted to drugs. Now he's turned to wacky religious fundamentalism to solve his personality problems. Same old thing. No, I will not be going to see "The Passion". Beyond how dumb and anti-Semitic it looks to be, I'm sure it would offend my historical sensibilities terribly. In fact, since it shows nails being hammered into hands on crosses, it loses me right there. That's what people in the Middle Ages, who had lost all knowledge of human anatomy, thought the Romans did. Nails went through the WRIST, not the hand.

Yep. Though "Victorian era" would be more apropos. Maybe they'd be happier living in a time when children worked in coal mines and women wore clothing that actually endangered their health. Actually in much of the world if a woman doesn't dress "correctly" her life is endangered, so... As for why discrimination against homosexuals is important... wow. We're talking about 10% of the population here. One out of every ten people. That's a lot. And even if it wasn't, discrimination of any kind against any group, no matter how small, is wrong and must be stopped. I always find these kind of questions strange. If I didn't fight for all civil rights, how could I say I fought for any? How does one pick and choose: well, it's too bad gays are beaten for holding hands (and straights are beaten if they're suspected of being gay), but a black man was dragged to death, but oh wait another woman was raped (that one happens a couple times per minute), on the other hand a child was just beaten, the icecaps are melting, food animals are raised in absolutely heinous conditions, war is rampant... I'll choose to just fight against the anti-choice movement and leave everything else alone. That makes no sense to me.

I would disagree, pro-gay means you support the gay agenda, which includes things like recruiting in high schools and supporting NAMBLA. Recruiting in high schools? You're not... serious... are you? I mean, you don't really believe that they do that, right? Because they don't. Reality check! I'm pro-my best friend and her wife. I'm also pro-my many other friends, with or without significant others of whatever gender. I'm also pro-me. I guess that makes me pro-sexual
