  1. Availability would be my guess. This happened to the original 7800GTX (256) and the 7800GT too since Nvidia were getting excellent yields. If the GX2 continues to be available, prices will continue fall. Since it's based on the GT and not the GTX, perhaps they have a reasonably large stockpile. Time will tell.
  2. $569 shipped free At this rate, its going to hit $500 in two weeks' time.

  4. In Nvidia's defense, they have stated that they will not support Quad-SLI officially. They will provide some functionality in their drivers, but it's mostly a best-efforts kinda thing with no guarantees.
  5. The screenshots look really nice. Do you think you could add a little "perspective" effect to the view (as in Diablo 2), instead of being completely orthographic? I don't think D2 used any 3D transforms, yet they managed to get the feel of a perspective transform (this was an optional feature that you could enable IIRC).
  6. Yeah, Nvidia's trying to milk the NV4x for all its worth. It was a great architecture when it was first introduced in 2004 as the 6-series but it's getting a bit old now, which is why they are having to resort to tricks like slapping together two cards into one (literally) to create the monstrosity that is the 7950GX2.
  7. At resolutions of 1600x1200 with 4xAA/16xAF, a single-core A64 4000+ with 1GB cheapo RAM should be good enough. I feel a modern shader- and bandwidth-intensive game (such as FEAR or Oblivion) is more likely to hit the GPU bottleneck first at these resolutions, even with a card as insane as the 7950.
  8. Seems to be a paid, non-P2P, File Sharing service. They will either make sure that no copyrighted content is shared, or have a clause in their sign-up agreement stating that they are not responsible for anything you upload or download.
  9. $582.75 Review. Yes, it's faster than two 7900GTX's running in SLI. It's faster than *any* gaming-graphics solution you can buy today, irrespective of how much money you are willing to spend. And yet, this product is an insult to innovation and a slap on the face of computer architecture. Brute Force FTL.
  10. Oh. My. God. What a game... I mean, what a game!
  11. Thanks for clearing that up.
  12. Good luck, Eldar. Hope your new card gives you a better experience. Think of these ultra-high end products as Ferraris - they are expensive and will give you the thrill of a lifetime, but their reliability is a joke. :D
  13. Snake! Snake!! SNAAAAAAKE!!!!!
  14. Hm, try scrolling down (I hadn't noticed this earlier). It'll give you a choice of 3 packages, choose the $19 package and you're all set.
  15. OK, so I couldn't resist and started it up. I only had a chance to play about 5-10 minutes, so the only thing I can comment on is the Graphics: Alyx looks more life-like than ever (w00t) ... they're suppoed to be using this so-called "Hero Lighting" on her. In-game, it looks real nice - very, very subtle, but it adds this little bit of... "life"... to her face. You don't always notice it, but when she's standing close to light sources, its effect can be seen. The quality of facial animation also seems to have been bumped up a notch. From what I've seen, the environmental HDR effects also seem subtle and well-done, unlike the slightly over-the-top treatment given to Lost Coast. I love my 7800GTX.
  16. Decrypting... Won't get around to really playing it before the weekend though. >.<
  17. ... while contributing NOTHING to the game itself...
  18. /seconded. (third-ed?) This is a very noticeable issue that you just cannot ignore. My LCD looks seriously craptacular at any resolution other than Native. I had to buy a new keyboard when I was trying out all the resolutions the day my monitor arrived, because I puked all over it. It's a damn good panel otherwise.
  19. At the moment, Nvidia middle-end products (a.k.a. 7600GT) seem to be a bit superior in performance to their ATi counterparts. You can't go wrong with a 7600GT, and as Eldar mentioned, if you tack on an aftermarket cooler, you're bulletproof. Do get a good PSU. For performance reviews, always use a dedicated hardware website such as extremetech.com, anandtech.com, hardocp.com, or tomshardware.com. Following are the manufacturers from which Nvidia-based cards are typically available in the US, in strict order of my personal preference: 1. BFG (US-based) 2. eVGA (US-based) 3. XFX 4. MSI, ASUS 5. Gigabyte BFG used to be the clear winner but eVGA seems to be fast emerging as the most feature-rich and customer-friendly manufacturer out there.
  20. But why should they? By re-selling the CD to me, the person that originally owned it is transferring their listening pleasure to me. If they were making a copy, that would be a different matter. Once I buy a CD or a game or a movie, I want it to be mine. Of course I don't own the intellectual property on the CD, but I sure as hell own the particular *instance* of the IP, which I should be able to use and resell as I please. Of course, the original intellectual contribution that the creators made should be *recognized*, but they need not be compensated again and again for the same physical instance of their content. This is especially true when you consider that a substantial part of the money you are paying for the product goes to the publisher, who is responsible only for creating millions of these physical replicas and distributing them.

  22. 802.11b is antique. You'll want a switch/router capable of 802.11g, or better still, 802.11a. Most of them are backwards-compatible, so an 802.11a-capable router will actually be labeled as an 802.11a/b/g device.

  24. Nah, if you are hearing sound from speakers that are connected to your add-on card, it means your add-on card is doing all the processing. I have an MSI motherboard with an on-board Creative SB Live chipset, and tests have shown that it is better than Realtek solutions both in terms of CPU utilization (measured) and audio quality (subjective of course). An add-on Audigy2 would be even better, I assume. If you listen to music a lot, and you have a decent set of speakers, you should probably think about an Audigy2.
