Men and women both are naturally inclined to overreact violently. How they tend to overreact, however, is very different and tends to both scare and bewilder the opposite sex. For some, this bewilderment leads to bitter resentment and insecurity. I feel like these threads have the right amount of gender-based tension that it's bringing out these negative feelings. Maybe I'm wrong, I have no idea, but I get the idea that there is a male majority here and it looks like the vast majority of the overreacting has come from men.

so pretty much here's how i guess it went down: The original pic goes up with silly out-of-place armor that appears to have been an oversight more than anything else. People point out how silly it is, some cite sexism, which in my opinion is a bit much but whatever. Obsidian says: "oh hey yeah you guys are right it. it is pretty silly, huh?" and changes it so that the breast plate looks like it actually works while still keeping rather large breasts. People who wouldn't have said anything had the second picture been posted first start yelling loudly that feminists are after their breasts and trying to ruin everybody's fun. They start crying about how you can't tell it's a woman now despite having a distinct hourglass figure. Tensions rise as people start trying to fight invisible enemies such as white knights and feminists swinging into the air saying that it isn't fair that they aren't targeting their fantasies like they were supposed to, thus making it a far bigger issue than it should have ever been. Meanwhile Obsidian's already made their voice clear that they found the original armor not in line with what they envision for the project. real talk, mra folks, you guys have actual issues in the real world that you should be rallying for. there will always be games with giant boobies everywhere and one game that won't have them isn't the feminist holocaust. chill as for "feminists" calling this act super sexist, i'd chill too. it's not that big of a deal and the mistake was acknowledged already.

it might blow your mind to find this out but i don't represent everyone who has posted against your ideas shocking i know There is a huge female audience for these games. just because your brain defaults people into being male doesn't mean everyone is. In fact, every core female gamer I know is a fan of rpgs and you'd be pretty hard pressed to find one that isn't. I also like how you constantly mention whiteknights and stuff as if this, when it gets down to it, actually has to do with feminism. yeah bioware has totally caved into the evil feminist's anti-sex schemes and that half the world's population apparently aren't allowed to share interests or anything like that. i'm not saying guys aren't allowed to have things targeted towards guys, it's just there has been absolutely no indication that women aren't in the demographic they're trying to reach, which I was under the impression was simply fans of old school rpgs, which have a pretty large audience. oh my gosh im sorry you won't be able to tell if one character is female in sprite form im not sure how your genitals will cope pro-tip: if the only thing keeping you from thinking a character is attractive is not prominently displaying boobs, then the character is just unattractive to you. most male characters in video games aren't attractive to women either and i don't really see any female gamers exclaiming that all male characters should be hot bishonen men. I have no idea why any fan of a male-prominent medium would be so ready to repel women in such a manner when others would be pretty excited to get them. go watch some porn holy cow

pfft RPGS have traditionally been pretty open ended when it comes to gender neutrality, typically because of how open-ended the story is. The thing that set these games apart from other genres were that they WEREN'T just catering to one group of people and that anyone could set their own paths. Other than maybe old school adventure games, I can't think of any other genre that has as high of a female to male ratio in terms of fans. Making a game about being open-ended ONLY for men simply doesn't make sense. If you seriously can't tell that she's a woman when they made her breasts slightly less prominent then that's kind of your own problem, dude. That suit of armor is still pretty feminine (fitting the waist pretty tight, giving her an distinct hourglass shape) and honestly if we wanted to really go accurate, it'd be less form fitting than it is now. Her breasts are still pretty obvious and still slightly curve pretty tightly. I have no idea what your experience with women is, but simply sticking breasts on a man's body will not create a woman and you should know that. Even then, a woman's design in a game not about sex should not be made for the sake of looking sexy towards men. I'm sorry if you don't find her attractive simply because her boobs are more protected now. the feminists are coming on the top where the tab for this window is, there is a x. you should click that when you think something is dumb and you don't want to read it so you could go out and do actual fun stuff. i'd do that myself, but im sick and can't leave bed right now

*citation needed* I've always known a wide female audience for old school rpgs. I'm not just talking about friends, I'm talking about going to cons and game stores and meeting plenty of women who absolutely loved such games. Are there as many as men, no, but the audience is hefty enough that it isn't one to be ignored. Most rpgs I've ever known have been pretty gender neutral in terms of audience. It gets a bit biased due to the high male to female ratio when it comes to development, but it's understandable in that regard. That doesn't mean you can put up your "girls not allowed" sign and cry about the lack of stupid looking armor. i don't know how rectifying bad design is considered feminists making things pc and bland because her breasts are less obvious and therefore she is completely ugly now i guess maybe i should say that i really like breasts. they're really great and i like looking at them because it makes me feel good inside. one less obvious pair of breasts in a game that is not about sex for the sake of better design isn't going to ruin the game and if i really wanted to go see nice boobies i'd just do a quick google search or something. also, jasede, i think the only reason why we're still talking about it is because people are crying about changing the design. that's what i got when i skimmed the original thread. *shrug*

badmojo- wow picking books that are supposed to be erotic for women is such a good comparison for a non-erotic rpg that is gender neutral. god forbid the idea that this isn't some boy's treehouse club. what's with all these people that think that every piece of entertainment ever should satisfy their sexual fantasies? is porn not enough? i seriously don't get this. moreover- why do people think that the original picture looks sexier? it's pretty dang obvious that the artist drew the character's body shapes then just traced armor onto it, hence why you see the slope of the breast and the underboobs are pretty prominent. it's not sexy. it's sloppy. like, seriously, take a look at the actual model. it wasn't just the breasts, it was the entire suit of armor. if anything, the breasts were probably more of a oversight than anything else.

furiku- 1) Yeah all those folks had more personality than just UGHS IM A MAN I HAVE MUSCLES FEAR MY PENOR KILL EVERYBODNY IM A MAN. All those folks you mentioned were strong and handsome yes, (which aren't bad things) however they also had real human flaws, thus relatable enough to the average person, and were incredibly clever, if not real smart. They all follow a certain archetype, yeah, but they aren't just muscles on legs. No mention on bimbo-fication, which I guess would mean we're at least on the same page for that. 2) There's a way called being tasteful and having giant boobles flop around with tiny metal pasties isn't it and it looks flat out ridiculous. I don't care if people think it's "freedom of expression". It looks ridiculous. No amount of reference pictures and history buffing will change that. 3) I was talking about the folks who were talking about the practicality of mostly-nude hand to hand combat but I guess you can think I was talking about that picture instead if it makes you feel better. I can tell you though that the plate looks pretty ridiculous. Anyone who actually understands breasts in the least bit would know how uncomfortable and silly that looks. Apparently Obsidian acknowledged that so it's all good. If they felt like they made the right artistic expression in the first place, I really doubt they would have changed it. im not sure why im even replying since, based on the styling of your post, you're gonna come at me about how apparently how the heroes you mentioned were actually mindless testosterone machines or that floppy boobs are practical or whatever because you're just trying to look for an argument in anything i say no matter how relevant it is to the actual topic due to me appearing to be on the "enemy team". k whateves also, i love how this thread is labeled "hot"

Bimbo-fication of women and rambo-fication of men is just infantile and lazy. It's the most one-dimensional way to create a character and it's really depressing that video games still just heavily rely on those tropes. yall talkin about cod pieces and crying about how men have unrealistic portrayals too and how feminists are comin after you and your precious boobies when in actuality it's just all about taking a medium seriously. And if you can't tell that there's a pretty obvious subtext of shallow sex appeal with someone fighting hand to hand combat in a push-up bra, and claiming it's all about being nimble, you're either super intellectually dishonest or just can't be helped. holy guac

Okay so as a human being, I understand the virtue of having attractive characters in a fantasy escape. It's a perfectly normal part of human nature to want idealized figures in our mythologies and stories. It's also perfectly normal to like sex. Sex is fun and sexy and it makes people feel good. I think it's perfectly okay for a game to have attractive characters and include elements of sexuality and/or romance. That said, the sheer onesidedness of how women are depicted in terms of men in video games (and how ridiculousness it's gotten) is kinda staggering. I understand that the world of game development is dominated by men and monoculture breeds these kinds of situations, but that doesn't make it okay. It's creepy, it's awkward and frankly it's lazy. It just makes me think that these folks just don't know how to make a woman likable or relatable so they just slap big boobs and show as much of her skin as possible while crossing their fingers to hope nobody notices that she's not a character so much as ornamentation. It weirds me out how quickly people are to defending all this simply because this is how it's always been and apparently if it's not exactly this way then characters are no longer allowed to be attractive ever again. Boobplates look really dumb. It makes me think that either artist knows nothing about female anatomy or has no idea on how to make a lady physically attractive without relying on boobs. If this was a fetish game specifically for the sake of porn, I can understand having a metal bikini, but this isn't. If she is for-serious knight then she's going to need proper armor otherwise it looks really, really dumb. Would such a thing completely ruin a game for me? No, but it's still really stupid and I wish it wasn't so universally accepted. It's stupid the same way is stupid. It's shallow and lazy. A piece of media can have attractive people doing attractive things (and even sexy things) without looking really dumb and infantile. Other mediums have been doing it for quite some time now. As for the folks that just want to get their rocks off, it's okay. It's no longer the 90's where video games are your only step up from lingere models in JC Penny magazines. The internet is here for all your porn needs. You don't need your sexual fantasies fulfilled in every piece of entertainment you partake in. This isn't a matter of me wanting to cut your precious pee pee off. It's a matter of wanting a studio to take its story and design seriously, which they apparently are. This is a good thing.
