Idle Thumbs' KotOR II review
ShadowPaladin V1.0 replied to funcroc's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
you said that bad disks are LA's responsibility when in fact all you have to do is change the disk. A patch on the other hand, that rests with the developers/publishers no do it yourself easy fix there. so as much as you would like to exagerate the problems with the Xbox, 90% of them are do it yourself fixes either from the Box or the Disk, case closed. -

The difference there is , that if you have a bad disk your only solution is to return it. Case closed end of story. If there is something up with your Xbox, then who's fault it is isnt particularly important. You can hardly blame the game for it. Where as with a PC if you meet the specs then you should in theory be able to play the game. Well before you could place blame you have to investigate things like how old, how well treated, where is it positioned etc. Rule one of consoles, if it works on one it works on all unless there is a problem with console or disk. There is never a coding issue. Although since it suits your purpose to take the complaints at face value I dont expect you care about other causes. Oh your definately exagerating. If those problems were common you would have heard about them in droves prior to the EU release. Just because they had problems dosnt mean those problems are solvable or the responsibility of Obsidian which is something that a patch would be. Well count yourself lucky then. But PC's and consoles are not the same. You would be suprised how many "problems" disapear when you take your Xbox off the top of the TV for example. -

Funny, says The Bards Tale in big letters on the box. Guess reality wins out over your opinion. -

Well I dont have any sympathy for some too lazy to change a disk. In the case of the Xbox it's all with the user if the game cant be played. Short of expecting LA or Obsidian to come around to your house and make it work for you, how much simpler could it be? -

I get the feeling your doing some major exageration.. "Gosh I have a bad disk. I know I will return to the store and get a new one" It's probably quicker than posting on the message board. Why would you even post you have a bad disk ? It's not like anyone but you can do anything about it. Well you could say that all the PC problems were down to bad disks, but again dont expect to be taken seriously at all. Might be a bad disk here and there when the game wont install. "oh look here is my shiny new replacement disk which I just got from the store, now I can play the game". -
The Bard's Tale Demo was released

That is why you let old titles die and come up with something, I don't know... ORIGINAL! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> This is original It's the "Bards Tale" the tale of the Bard who is the central character. It's a clever play on words by Brian Fargo. Actually it makes more sense this time around than it did in the previous games. The whole game is played out like a book , with a narrator who tells the tale, occasionally talks to the Bard (and dosnt have a very high opinion of him). -

No I had the full PS2 version bought for me for easter I've heard only bad things about the PC controls, so I'd take a look first. The PS2 controls are flawless , never seen 16 options off the shoulder pads done so well. -

It's still a rampant frequency. So I'd say that constitutes a bigger problem than you want to admit. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> How so ? None of those things have anything to do with the publisher or the developer. Going to blame Obsidian for your Xbox going belly up ? Well you could try, but you would be laughed at. Bad Box , well if it's out of warranty your out of luck but it's hardly the games fault. Bad disk, it happens take it back problem solved. Again nothing to do with developer or publisher. You get a new disk problem solved. What exactly is a rampant frequency anyway? Just how many bad disk posts have their been. Anyone who even hints at a modded Xbox can be ignored by the way. As can anyone trying to run the game from the HD none of those things are supported or intended and you do them at your own risk. -
i'm definately buying SW:Lego. Will probably rent the new EPIII game, though it dosnt look too bad I dont know enough about it to pre order it.

There is a lot of good stuff on the GC , even more if you have a GBA player.

If the game wont load on the Xbox there are two reasons. A. Bad Box B. Bad Disk Thats it, simple as that. No my video card might be incompatible , or my drivers need upgrading. most people with common sense would take the game back and or get their box checked. -

Highly unlikely... Can you think of one single example of a PC game which didnt need to patched recently? Take KOTOR II, Bioware wasnt rushed, the Xbox version shipped with a bloody huge gamestopper and the PC version required three patches. The truth of it is, that no matter how good your Q&A nothing says finding bugs like releasing the game to 1000s' of people who just love to complain. -

Thats nonsense I'm afraid. The Xbox version is no where near as bugged. If your talking about trivial little things like duplicate lightsabers, not really that important in the big picture. -

Well of the three consoles the Xbox has the lowest standards of quality in my experience. However KOTOR II seems to work fine many of the reported errors are due to people arsing around with their Boxes which is a naughty thing to do. Or something as simple as a bad disk, it happens, and I dont know of any store who wont change it for you. I'm not blaming the PC gamers, this isnt about them. It's about the PC as a machine and it's failings. And how those failings have implications on future projects because your still patching up the last one to shut people up. -

Thats the problem. Because it would always "make the game better" because thats what people have decided. Whether or not it actually would dosnt seem to matter anymore. Rather than just enjoying the game, people are now looking for other missing content. I'm really glad I played it in ignorance of all this I'm still mystified as to why it would be left behind -

Heres an interesting question then. If it had been a case of dropping the PC version, do you think that the tight deadline would have made the slightest difference? Dropping the Xbox version was never going to be a possibility anyway. I wonder how developers feel about the multi configeration PC these days, because I've come to see it as a waste of time and effort which will invariably mean delaying your next project while you patch the last one. Which considering that a couple of years ago I was buying a PC game a week on average. Is a bit of a shift. -
Thats the plan. With Halo III launching the week of the PS3 release. Sony carried on supporting the PS after the launch of the PS2 with great success. Obviously if you already have a market to tap you could do a KOTOR III Xbox and then in a year follow up with an Xbox II with extras version (by which point you will have more consoles on the market). It probably depends on how well the Xbox II does in initial sales.

Yes, but on a message board that can snowball quite quickly. Prior to the PC release everyone was happily playing KOTOR II without worrying about missing content. Now it's become a fixation for the game being "unfinished". no doubt a bit of a headache for Obsidian and LA as well as the whole after product patch thing which is not something that you ever need to worry about on a console release. -
Depends on the platform. If it's Xbox with current engine, then an early release to tie things up is possible. If on the other hand it goes to Xbox II, then you have not only a new engine, but a totally new assembly kit too.

No , just common sense. I happen to think the PC version was more trouble than it was worth. And a hefty exclusive bonus from Bill would have made up for not having one. -
The Adventures of Bob the wolfman... Actually suprisingly easy to figure out except the switch for magic which I couldnt get rid of for a while. Combats ok, nothing too taxing. Similiar to bloodlines in a lot of ways. So far I've managed to hack my way through rats, wolves, goblins and an undead or two. Bats on the other hand.. probably need a bow or something. Magic is where it's at , it's powerful stuff. Dont know if this was a glitch but I stood around for a while messing around without talking to the messanger. And the screen sort of filled up with beasties (note to self a -14 penalty is not a good thing). So I dug around in the magic menu and found and ice spell which pretty much cleared the screen .Its like a third person version of the inferno spell, its quite fun , just hold down the magic key and spin around. Until it runs out.... nothing like your spells running out at the wrong time. Nether magic is icky, interesting but definately icky (though in a game, rather than a gameplay sense). Character creation/growth is really nice, you just sort of spend your XP as you get them. Probably wont buy it as I have nothing but bad memories of W&W but for a free demo it's not a bad way to waste a few hours.

Well where it says "He started it , that guy" It should have a picture of Richard Branson next to it. Game dropped their prices within the last month. At some point the overheads of stores will be too much to compete with widespread online shopping. The most common question the staff get asked there is "why is XXXX -

Dosnt suprise me in the slightest. It's always been one of those things about the games market. It dosnt really matter how much you put in you cant really charge for it. So no Morgan cars in the industry. I guess thats why sales are everything when it comes to publishers. I've noticed that people are always very eager to talk about quality. Until it comes to forking over the cash, then most go silent. -
Thanks for the tip. I'll probably wait till I'm more alert before coming to any conclusions
