  1. USS Nitze launches Tomahawks against coastal surveillance radar sites in retaliation: https://news.usni.org/2016/10/13/video-uss-nitze-destroys-3-houthi-controlled-radar-sites-retaliatory-strike However "tattle" ships such as speed boats with commercial GPS devices can still be a problem, helping to cue further attacks against targets further out to sea. Though I suppose it's serendipitous that the Ponce has that LaWS on board:
  2. My guess is that this was due to balance considerations. For instance in Dawn of War 2, your hero could be doing an awesome sync kill... unable to retreat and giving your opponent's Hormagaunts more than enough time to surround him and take him down.
  3. You can get a pretty good rundown of how the Aegis Combat System works from this video: Some reports seemed to suggest that the inbound vampires fell well short of the Mason anyways while the SM-2s and ESSM were mid-flight, probably spoofed into the ocean by jamming from the Mason. If true, then there remains not a single instance in the whole of modern naval warfare where an anti-ship missile has successfully impacted a ship that was employing any kind of ECM of countermeasures.
  4. I think the fact that he engaged in "what-about-ism" vis-a-vis Bill Clinton in his "apology" left me with an even lower opinion of Trump afterwards, to be honest. For god's sake, for a guy as egotistical as him that opportunity was supposed to be all about him and nothing more.
  5. In ye olden days of Battlefield 2 when by chance you find yourself in a squad where everyone else is using mics, sticking together, and _co-operating_. I remember one time we flew in the weeds in a Blackhawk to covertly insert and seize the enemy airfield and singlehandedly turning the tide of the match. Then there are the times when you take off in an attack helicopter with a gunner who knows what he's doing and can routinely nail Havocs with the notoriously squirelly TV-guided missiles. Combined with my experience flying terrain masking in Enemy Engaged and together we topped the score chart by a _huge_ margin.
  6. As a fun little exercise, I tried to come up with a D&D alignment chart for 20th Century Firearms. Let me know what you think: Lawful Good: H&K MP5 (the SMG feared by terrorists, bank robbers, and hostage-takers everywhere) Neutral Good: FN FAL ("Right Arm of the Free World", 'nuff said) Chaotic Good: Colt M-16 (Serves the public good, just watch out for collateral damage) Lawful Neutral: Colt Canada C-7 (Based on how UN Peacekeeping missions used to be a Canadian past-time) True Neutral: IMI Uzi (You're as likely to see it being used by the good guys as it being used for a drive-by shooting in South-Central) Chaotic Neutral: Kalashnikov and derivatives (For the most prolific implement of war, this seriously goes without saying) Lawful Evil: Tokarev TT (Favoured means of execution by Zampolits) Neutral Evil: IMI Desert Eagle (Used by deadly, misanthropic computer programs and crime bosses with an inflated sense of self-worth) Chaotic Evil: Luger P-38 (The quintessential Nazi gun)
  7. Of course for the EU certain projects have proceeded too quickly (the Euro) and others proved entirely inequitable to some of its most vulnerable members (the Dublin Convention) Nonetheless, I think eventually the world will be politically united whether we like or not within the next, I don't know, 5000 years, the precise date doesn't really matter. It may blow itself up once or twice within that time, in which case many will find the unity we so craved in the mass grave, but it is going to happen. The process already began several centuries ago when we started seeing the first intercontinental empires in the 1500s and by the 19th century we were well on our way to a global, interconnected economy. In terms of physical travel time the whole world is smaller than France was 200 years ago, and of course in terms of communications the time it takes for this very post to be available to all the people of the world is even shorter than the walk to my kitchen. In that environment and in a time where rule of law, freedom of speech, and democracy are (largely) institutionalised in the developed world I hardly think we can go back to a time when German kids sang "Gott straffe England" and kids in the UK reciting "To rid the map of every trace Of Germany and of the Hun We must exterminate that race We must not leave a single one". Not without courting disaster:
  8. New 4A Game! Yay! But it's exclusive to Oculus Touch! Boooo!
  9. Interestingly enough Pence went off message from Trump and thought Assad's force (or what's left of them) shouldn't miss out on the JDAM fun.
  10. Given that the stuff he's released has had evidence of being tampered with, probably will do more to confirm his status as a butt buddy for Putin.
  11. My family (who range from Reagan Republicans to democratic socialists of the Swedish school) has known him to be an ostentatious and crass huckster for the 30 years since he became a public figure (and myself since I was 13 when I started reading Doonesbury), so it strikes me as at least a little odd that a not insignificant portion of the electorate hasn't caught on to this fact when they had that 30 years of history to work that out for themselves.
  12. I found this to be hilarious:
  13. Wonder if you could tune that into something that goes with the second verse of the old British Army Ballad "I Don't Want to Join the Army":
  14. Holy Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, this looks amazing: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=770691721 If this comes though, looking forward to sending Akulas, Victors, and Udaloys to Davey Jones' Locker.
  15. I made the trip to San Diego to see the Miramar Air Show last weekend: Some of the F/A-18Cs and AV-8B Harrier IIs on the flightline before taking the tram to the main show area. Easily my favourite static display at the show, the B-1B Lancer. An iconic Cold Warrior: An up close and personal look at the AN/AAQ-33 "Sniper" Advanced Targeting Pod mounted on said aircraft: And a look inside its internal bomb bay: Another classic, a USAF F-4E Phantom II: Next, a KC-135 Stratotanker. Appropriately enough, it was directly ahead of the Bone: The public was given the opportunity to enter the aircraft, and despite my greatest wish to get some pictures from the boom operator's station, the wait was simply too long and we had to make haste to get front row spots on the flightline. "Growlers! Look, baby! EA-18G Growlers!" I yelped to my girlfriend. For some inexplicable reason she appeared disinterested and gave me a "I'm happy for you" look before turning her attention to the $11 craft beer stands in the 96 degree San Diego heat.
  16. I remember rolling on the ground in laughter when I used my Jedi Mind Tricks on him for that quest.
  17. Try a five year old that somehow managed to have Alzheimer's, exhibit A:

  19. needs the appropriate logo or perhaps HA! Good Fun! I remember seeing one squadron emblem that depicted Hobbes in a position ready to pounce. I can't quite remember whether it was for an F-117 squadron or an OH-58D Kiowa Warrior team and for the life of me I can't find it now. Nevertheless I found it quite apropos for a "low-observable" aircraft.
  20. Lol, is she drunk or on Ambien there? Might have been Dae'esh. Could just as easily have been high school morons, right-wing militias, disgruntled employee going postal, white supremacist, crazed BLM guy, and so forth. What people fail to realise is that while the folks like Christopher Harper-Mercer, Dylann Root, Eliott Rodger, Omar Mateen, Micah Johnson et al attach themselves to different causes, they're all part of the same phenomenon and are cut from the same cloth of maladjusted losers. I don't know if people quite remember this, but North America has had mass shootings for decades before this.
  21. They ought to try _building_ a party over years rather than just having one every four.
  22. It kind of occurs to me that I don't find Adam Jensen's non-lethal takedowns in Mankind Divided (which often boil down to palm-striking a dude in the Adam's Apple) as entertaining as the ones from Human Revolution. What else? Playing through the Original Sin 2 Early Access. Turns out the the elf character I'm playing _really_ doesn't react well to authority, and as such when I commit to roleplaying I'm stepping on far more toes than I normally would in an RPG. My inner min-maxer is howling in agony.
  23. Am I the only one here who finds it more than a little hilarious how Trump is giving a speech on the economy in a luxury hotel that was famous not only for being featured in Scent of a Woman but also for being bought out by a Chinese insurance firm? Actually, the State Department stopped using it due to concerns that the rooms were bugged by Chinese intelligence.
