Well, given that MS also owns inExile, and that they will soon release Wasteland 3 as a turn-based isometric RPG (like the last one), I'm feeling confident that Obsidian will be able to release a Pillars of Eternity 3 as we know and love, but better if they wish to.

I am also sure that POE 3 will be the next big project from Obsidian

No it won't. Sawyer has made it very clear he wants a nice long break from PoE

They can make PoE3 without Sawyer.  Sawyer wasn't even the director the PoE2 DLCs.

    They can, but they won't.

But there's no harm in holding on to your dream.

Feel free to show your proof kid.  But even if you don't show any proof, there is no harm holding on to your dream either.

The Grieving Mother: Everything I wrote about Durance applies to the Grieving Mother too, only that I feel her existence was way more self-contained and her arc was also given a much clearer conclusion than Durance's. If Avellone was still around I could have seen a potential return of Durance in a sequel, but never of the Grieving Mother.

And I killed her in the first game. (Crazy cat ladies. Ew.)

You seem obsessed with hating this fictional character.

    A few Tumblr posts today:

Two with old-to-us information on multi v. single classes.

    One interesting one on difficulty:

Q:  Cohcarnage didnt reload on potd.Did you tuned down the difficulty?

A:  We didn’t tune down the gameplay effects of Path of the Damned, but I do think that sections of the critical path on PotD are not as challenging because the encounters aren’t as large and varied as they should be.

I take responsibility for it.  I didn’t want to prioritize PotD tuning over bugfixing because I think it’s preferable to have fewer bugs and easier PotD combat at launch than the opposite.  That said, there are side areas that are quite challenging on Veteran and PotD and there are sections of the critical path that are also challenging on those difficulties.  It’s just not consistent.

I’ve written up bugs for key areas that I think need to beefed up for an early patch.  They aren’t dramatic changes, but they do require testing, so I didn’t want to push for them prior to launch.  I apologize to anyone who is disappointed.  I think we can get to an appropriately consistent, challenging level of PotD difficulty with a modicum of work and testing.

Makes sense.  Rarely will people play the highest difficulty, but a lot of people will complain about bugs.

  5. This might be fun to have on record somewhere. Release is coming up. Let's talk about what we expect (for good reasons or bad) to experience then revisit the thread when we've finished the game. I'll start.

    Plot:

Eothas will be sympathetic and always meant to be blown up.

Berath will turn out to be evil.

    It's all Ondra's fault. Again.

Whatever God your watcher pledged itself to will be meaningless unless it was Berath. Especially Skaen/Woedica

Durance and "Falanroed" will actually appear in the game and have significance. No other save import features will have any real impact.

At some point we'll learn about a powerful rival to the Engwithan civilization.

The pacing will be very weird if you just follow the main story due to open world shenanigans.

    Gameplay:

In most cases, multiclasses will prove superior to single classes.

All but the highest end armor will be useless.

Direct damage spells will be trash.

    Companions:

Edér will be less likeable than in the first game. Writers felt he was too flawless so they'll play up new flaws and exaggerate old ones to try to force more nuance.

Aloth/Iselmyr will seem cool but be stymied by lack of save import reactivity. Retread of the first game.

Pallegina will surprise me by actually being really interesting this time around. Most people won't use her though because she'll constantly fight with their favorite companion(s)

Xoti will prove to either be the Durance/Edér/Zahua of this game in terms of depth, or just shallow waifu bait. There can be no middle ground. I'll probably keep her around even in the worst case scenario because priest + I like her voice.

Maia will be cool but ultimately straightforward.

Serafen will annoy me. A lot.

Tekehu will annoy me at first but end up entertaining me.

All the sidekicks will bore me

The best pet will remain Concelhaut's skull

    Relationships:

All the romances will standard video game fair, meaning I'll find them insultingly pandering.

The following companions will hate each other: Pallegina, Xoti, and Tekehu. Edér and Xoti. Serafen, Maia, and Tekehu.

    Overall:

I'll complain a lot but rate it 9/10

I swear you sound like one of the regulars I've seen on 4chan.

  6. So you can choose and rearrange the items? Good.

I wonder if there is any quest/dungeon that will lock the party away for a day or two. Better be prepared just in case or they may try to find out where I keep the good stuff. :p

In the currrent beta, food is only consumed while you're sailing.  If you're on foot, only daily wages are consumed.  This is a recent change that I think they're sticking with.

  7. Have any of you booked the day off work to play it?

I actually used to book the day off for WoW expansions back in the day haha. Then do an all nighter.... yeesh the good old days eh. My girlfriend would kick my arse if I did that now.

I work freelance around 5 hours a day.  I have no need to take vacations since I'm single with no kids and have a lot of free time throughout the day.  :D

However, I'm still going to wait a few weeks to a month before playing.  I'm busy playing a few other games at the moment.

If you guys want to live in a deluded fantasy realm where you think Obsidian makes major budget choices based on nothing other than "but Larian did it!!!!?!?!?!!" then go ahead.

Yeah, it's truly insane to assume that a company would try to be as good (or better) as their competition. :p

They have completely different gameplay, completely different class systems, completely different tone, completely different stories, the graphics are very different both in style and presentation, one of them is even multiplayer focused while the other is explicitly a single player game.

Other than being isometric RPG's they really aren't similar at all.  Many don't like Eternity that much, but loved Original Sin, and vice versa.  They tend to appeal for completely different reasons.  Some people may like both, but that doesn't mean they are competing.  Case in point, I won't play Original Sin unless I have a friend online who wants to play with me.  Because as a single player RPG, I think it sucks.

Just because both games aren't similar in exact features doesn't mean they're not competing with one another.  That's like saying Final Fantasy and the Tales series aren't in the same genre because they play and look differently.

Both Divinity and Pillars are top down western RPGs that focus on gameplay, roleplaying (C&C) and story.  One series has a multiplayer, but the entire game can be played as a single player story driven rpg.

Deny it all you want, but they are competing with one another.  Both games always get compared when someone is looking for a CRPG.

  9. I had no issues playing POE1 on release, so I'm going to do the same for Deadfire...as I do for every game I get on release.

I played POE1 on release and again post 3.0 and I can't say I saw a big difference between the two.

I'm not one to care too much about balance, I noticed the Enemy AI changes right away when I played through 3.0.  When it comes to combat, there is a huge amount of differences.

If priests were bad ass and rogues completely suck, they would feel ripped off.

How are you able to make that comparison when you are evaluating them by different metrics? What are the scales here?

The scale is effective contribution to the party's success. In PoE for example Durance was far more effective than any rogue. I haven't done a mathematical analysis to demonstrate that, I just know it from experience, but I have no doubt it could be proved. I would not be surprised if the additional damage output across the party from from just Dire Blessing casts alone amounted to more than a single rogue's damage output for the whole game.

Not to mention the DPS increases from protecting the entire party from Terrify, Confuse, Charm, Dominate, Paralyze, etc etc

Hello there, your fan is speaking. Yesterday i checked the latest PoE patch and im still frustrated. What is this really? I consider myself to be the great follower of your games and game decisions. I've played all of your RPG based games, went through the max difficulty of last pillars and that was interesting with my custom builds and party variations.

And what do we have now, in 2018? After the great mechanic of first pillars combat and talents? The weapon choice and the 10+ to defences at the talent tree? Seriously? What kind of multiclass are you talking about, if the main classes are incredibly dull and boring?

When the 80% of choices are uninteresting and obvious. For example the warriors second update of focus ability - the choosing between 50% gazes to hits and 50% to crits and +5 intelligence? Seriously?

If you are talking about multiclass why cant you add somehing like gamechanging mechanics to talents, like furious warrior (just an example) that gives you +to damage for a short time but a loss of accracy, or spellsword when your damage becomes modified by intelligence vs might? Is it so hard?

Yes, that is hard to balance, but this is interesting! First pillats was terrible at balance even after final patches, but is had great choices and options for certain types of parties. Deadfire have none.

Wanted to buy deluxe edition pre-order, but now im not sure. Please spare more of your time to the talents trees. Now that is just pathetic.

Very true and valid but do remember that you are on an Obsidian forum. Prepare to be burned in witch's fire and crucified lmao

By the way, welcome to the forums! Hopefully we don't scare you off, it's nice to get from fresh blood but unfortunately new members tend not to last very long.

You say the same stuff every time.  :p  Nobody is attacking him.  In fact, a lot of people here agree with the topic creator on the subject if you look through the beta forums.

  12. Lore Question

Can godless priests exist within the lore?  We know that Priests don't get their spells from the Gods, so perhaps a godless priest could get spells based on their own beliefs.

    Game Question

Will fire godlikes get updated (or new) portraits?  They look completely different in PoE2, but they are still using the old portraits based on fire godlikes from PoE1.

    You sacrifice Zahua...

    Now who's the monster :o

    Not whoever sacrificed Zahua.

You guys need to abandon the D&D alignment concepts, it really does not apply well to Eternity.

Even in the pillars world, killing someone painfully like that is considered a cruel act.  You can't even do the sacrifice anybody unless you have a point of cruel disposition.  I think the reaction from your companions is proof enough how monstrous it is.

  14.

Somehow that's where I often end up. I always set out to be this great legendary hero but then by act II I'm Mind Tricking people into giving me their money because I'm broke.

How. . .Just. . .How. . .I ended the game with like a quarter of a million. Aside from the Paladin shield in the first town, I never paid for anything. The best loot and spells are plundered off dead enemies. . .What the devil did you find to spend your money on?

There is a lot of good unique loot you can get from the stores.  You're missing out if you ignore them.  You not going to find items like shatterstar or forgemaster gloves on any enemies.

  15. Generally, people do not play games on the hardest difficulty - especially on the first time around. It's usually very time consuming so for those, like myself who have jobs, spouses and kids, this is a big No. Of course there are some games which Hard Mode isn't really that hard and they are an exception but for the most part, the short answer is a simple "No."

Agreed.  You have people on here and certain other forums bragging about how easy POTD is.  Howver, for the majority of us, it's pretty hard, even for a CRPG veteran like myself.
