Politics... US election edition (2020 almost over, read all about it!)
Darkpriest replied to Gorth's topic in Way Off-Topic
Looking at the outcome so far, protecting the brand backfired for Twitter's value. FB is next on the list. Google, Amazon and Apple are a bit more tricky, as they hold a lot of various aspects of the online/internet accessibility, hence they will be first targetted with regulations with short amount of time to implement them and heavy fine prospects. Too much regular business is locked and dependand of their infrastructures at the moment. Now, this might have some other consequences as well. Looking on the concentration of the capital on the stock market, it may result in a spectacular crash. I'm sure Russians and Chinese are already on their feet working their diplomatic core and lobbysts. If there is one thing that hurts US, that's their money and stocks. Funnily enough, it would be Trumps hill to die on, protecting the American business. Dems will have a hard time explaining to their base, why Bezos an his ilk from big corporations is something to fight for. -

This is what I said. You can expect a heavy anti-trust hammer coming down on US tech on the EU side. This display of force woke up some people. So far, there was an unspoken consensus, that even though those companies hold such buttons at their disposal, they will not use them against the political class. This is now out of the window, and there will be a lot of regulation coming. It will take some time thougj to clarify the details, as there will be disagreement about the definition of prohibited hate speach, but there are always things you can trade among EU countries to get to an effective consensus. Those comapnies were already in the crosshair for tax related matters and privacy related regulations. -

Problem is, I believe those companies do not wnt to be treated as publishers, yet they behave like sucha and demand from platforms they're hosting to curate content like a publisher, correct? -

Well, one thing is sure. Do not expose your private data to US based companies, as US has very poor data protection rules. You are best with companies registered in EU. I hope EU will be hard on FB and other social media about the storage of data and data protection for EU citizens. As for Twitter, I think they shot themselves in the knee. Their stock is sliding, user base most likely will dwindle significantly, and the use of platform itself as well, as bubbled echo chambers do not create sufficient traffic. As for Google, Apple and Amazon, while they will get away in US, I do believe that there will be an anti-trust hammer coming on this side of the pond. They will also adhere to whatever demands China and India will have. Not sure how Aussies and South Africa will react. This flexing of the muscles might bite them back way more than they expected. They've shown how much power they wield, and that might given some people in politics some second thoughts, if that's a bit not too much of a power. Finances are one thing, but de facto existence is a different ball game. -

And they will be reimbursed for the downtime, amount of manhours put into development of their product with cloud etc.? So you are basically saying that another company can influence what you can and what you cant do as your business, who to hire, what to sell etc.? Imagine now a bank being shut down, because people share information in non politically correct form. Etc. I realize emotions are high, and you don:t give a hoot about it, until it will affect you? But for now it is affecting those, who you dislike. -

Sooo... You guys are fine with this? Nothing rings an alarm bell? Still fine and open market with equal competition rights? -

I do not doubt the vaccinations are a solution, i just do not think this first gen vac is the answer. I'll wait and see how it's effectiveness runs in the population. I'm not in the prio group, even though I could purchase my access into one, so by June 2021 there will be more real data. -

Herd immunity, the issue is, this virus does not create a permanent immunity. People get sick second time and some even third by now. That's why I'm a bit skeptical whenit comes to the vaccine as the solution, unless it is some really good one. The virus adapds quickly, as the new more infectious form proves. It's not more leathal, although each infection leaves you permanently 'injured' in some extent. From changes in the heart tissue, lungs to changes in the brain. Effects and their severity can vary, but i think we can kiss goodbye to the permanent immunity. It's now a matter if we can keep winning a race with the mutations and the spread of the virus, so it will not be more of an issie than a regular flu. For that, we need effective medicine, that will not require people to be plced in hospitals en masse. -

Personally, I think he miscalculated in his cynical approach. Looking on his actions and policies, he does not fit egomaniac too well. He had very pro-Israeli approach in his foreign policies. Was anti-russian, but without excess. Tried a PR stunt with North Korea. Prevented going into more conflicts (attack on Iran for example) and started wrapping up some existing US deployments. Got a better deal for US in the NAFTA. Started to put a pressure on economic relations with China. Deregulated some areas, and lowered some taxes. And then, there are some actions that were aimed to satisfy the perception of his core base, like trying to deal with illegal immigration, pulling from climate agreement, and political bashing with dems using dubious tactics. Overall, the last stunt was unnecessary. He lost more than he could have gained. Although I think he understood he started fighting for his life after the presidency, when he understood that he will be deplatformed and cancelled by the BigTech. This is probably what led him to entrnech so hard in the post election period. You can't make any business, if you are deplatformed everywhere. (really shows the power that Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon hold) -

I feel it's unneeded circus. I suspect, he did not expect the actual events to turn out as they did, and he just hoped to go out as someone hated by elites and so called 'deep state' etc, whatever speaks to disenfranchised people who lost on globalization and are being marginilized or people being afraid that they can't just speak their mind, because they will be cancelled for their opinion or a verbal outburst of emotion. Funnily enough, the aftermath is just proving the power that was mounted to get rid of Trump. They want him deleted and inaccessible. I wonder though, if people realize, who will be the next big bad, because I can assure you, that it won't be banks or big tech corportations. -

So you say, that if a company has ToS, which is abusive, it's fine? I guess we need to check all those past anti-trust and consumer rights cases from the past. Perhaps companies were fined without reason. You are saying, that the company can use its monopolists position, to force actions, behavior, functionality, etc., which is not required by law? They can shut your entry to the market, when you are doing nothing illegal? Don't they fall into 230? Is there any content, which would be deemed ceiminally offensive allowed there? What will happen, people will most likely move to Huwaweii's phones and their OS and app store. That would be hilarious though, if the anti-china crowd would have to use Chinese products to function freely in the land of the free. -

It also seems that Twitter's competitor has been banned from the Google app store. This smells a bit of an anti-trust case. Not sure if that's US users only, or global though. -

Actually, content of POTUS was deleted (the most recent one). I can imagine that they will lock the account until Biden's admin will take it over. -

When people attempted to breach premises of WH and police used riot gear and tear gass pre-emptively, it was considered scandalous, outragous etc. So which approach it is. Pre-emptoive or reactionary? Seems neither is good. -

Yes, it could have. Instead of labeling the terrorists, etc. get a conciliatory speach, offer counsel to those apperhanded, and even possibilty to pardon on a case by case approach after the federal investigation. After all, you want to de-escalate, and take away munition for fearmongering. Dems got it all now it seems, so instead of retaliatory language and a one of exclusion, it was a perfect opportunity to do so and start showing aspects of a unifier. You won't change hard nutts over one action, but starting with a strong positive language would start eroding the less fervent base. -

You had Harris defending the rioting... https://youtu.be/NTg1ynIPGls The main point though flew over your head. I could hear 'zoooooooom' from over the other side of AtlanticO It was a good opportunity to use and build a narrative about people being misguided and used (and how dangerous words and false accusations can be, when a person with influence is spreading those) , and instead there is now another foot of a trench dugged out. Hey, it's your country. For all I care you can go at each others throats. Just don't spill that nonsense outside of your sandbox. -

Btw, calling those people terrorists by Biden and not calling the protesters, while calling all the rioting and looting mobs 'peaceful protesters' is a show of double standards. This will make people even more divided. Instead of calling these people misguided and abandoned, who need to be guided and ubited with, he puts even more of a negative emotions into an already complicated situation. -

Ok, so I hear one of Police Officers died? Anyone knows the details? That's absolutely something that should not ever be happening as a part of a protest... -

I agree on that, but the initial reports on some news panes, without seeing the footage, made it like a beginning of a 2 civil war and a power grab coup by DT. While after initial emotions cooled, police didn't even have to use tight shield wall formation to escort protesters down the stairs... -

Not seeing that on the TV footage though, and I looked at CNN for that. Worst things they had on a reel, was some people breaking outside window, some guys in the chamber with tossed up stuff, some people bashing inside door and near the gunshot situation, some pro-trumper switching us flag with trump flag (the US flag was passed down and not damaged), and some guy keeping distance from the officer retreating upstairs. Was shown as it was a black officer chased by a white dude, but sadly for CNN the people did not maul him there on the staircase... Some barrier pushing outside the building and that's it. I did not see anything even remotely similar to ANTIFA black blocks, or mob attacking police during 'peaceful protests', or the burnings and use of explosives during other protests, like ones gains Trump near the White House. -

Yup, it looked more like a spontaneous action. I did not see people there in any "tactical" gear. I wonder what was the trigger? Mob psychology is interesting and scary at times. I would blame it on Trumps initial speach. As for media equipment being destroyed. Not a thing I'd support, but I can understand where the anger came from, as these people are being compared to literal 'reichs ppl' by most TV networks. -

I watched more of a footage, and to be honest, while the action itself is to be condemned, as it really does fly against law and order, I have not seen much voilence. Considering that police wasn't in riot gear, I have not seen significant voilence. There wasn't a single molotov ****tail flying, not a single fire laid, no life threatening voilence. The worst I've seen was some destroyed window and tossed up furniture... 4 ppl died from gun wounds? That's on police and sec serv? 13 injured officers? Were any of that severe? -

I turned tv on, and I do not see any fire, nothing being devastated, a bunch of people standing with flags, as the police secured the stairs. No bricks flying towards police. So i think that some of the feed is exaggerated. I guess the initial encounter was abit shocking, but its not looking dangerous to passer bys. -

Sadly, this is not unexpected or it was even predictable. The worst part is, that this would happen no matter who won. Both sides are so heavily polarized, that they are almost at a point of no reconciliation. Years of demonizing each other. Again, we saw partisianship, when it comes to voilence before. When autonomous zones were established, when governmental property was destroyed, when citties were looted etc. it was a "right to express". It was predictable, that such stance will only enrage the other side of population as they are treated unequally. The long lockdowns and rules for thee but not for me also put more powder to that keg. Lets hope it will get diffused onstead of detonated. IHowever it already shows, that there is little united i the USA. China and Russia will use this and fuel secretly from the sidelines. It is not yet so bad, that they could challange US openly. However in 2 decades at best 5ys at worst, there will be a significant shift of power center in the geopolitics. Paradoxically, the socialist and extreme PC culture, which claims need for tolerance (as long as it is our tolerance) led to once united and homogenous societies with clear sets of values got oblitarated. The source of their past success is damaged and with little drive to rebuild it. Too much focus on consumption and egocentrizm.
