  1. WHO can't give Taiwan membership outside linked membership through China until UN recognizes Taiwan and UN can't do that until its members like USA recognizes Taiwan as independent entity.
  2. https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/493044-trump-threatens-to-adjourn-both-chambers-of-congress "President Trump on Wednesday threatened to use his executive power to force both chambers of Congress to adjourn if the Senate did not confirm his nominees for vacancies across the administration." Congressional oversight but only if president agrees
  3. USA contributes to lots of specific research projects organized by WHO, but that money doesn't really go WHO, but different medical and pharmaceutical companies that need to do world wide test for their drugs and devices.
  4. They owe membership fees for 99 million as they have not paid for couple years now. USA has only given WHO money to projects in which WHO buys things from USA. https://www.who.int/about/finances-accountability/funding/account_statement/2020/usa_en_2020.pdf
  5. If you say so, what I remember it did not really do that, but as can't read it again as it is moved behind paywall and I don't think that I will pay for subscription just to check, so lets say that you are right. EDIT: As I don't feel that this need any more talk I would say that article doesn't talk about it. As it just glance over idea that politicians needs to debate which exit model to follow, but main point is that writer thinks that it is more important that there is exit strategy than that exit strategy actually works as it gives people hope and feeling that things will return normal. So as I said article has tone where every theory is equal and we need to just pick one that sound best
  6. From where politicians dig those workable solutions if not from technical reports and prediction models based on available data? Should the just guess and hope for best? Of course one should except that politicians have enough understanding to be able use those reports and models to decide actions that best serve their constituents (this includes to holding on ideologies, morals, worldviews, etc.).
  7. It is the title and tone of article which is quite common these days in media which (based on my unproven hypothesis) helps to create atmosphere where scientific evidence and expert testimonies are viewed by many just opinions among others, which leads culture where people just pick opinions/beliefs that fit their worldview best, which has lead many to see conspiracy theories as actual proven things. Politicians are elected to be people's representatives in governmental bodies to decide which direction and how country should proceed. Their decisions are supposed to based on scenarios/options given by experts and bureaucrats of multiple fields so that they can pick best possible route for people they represent and country's chosen path should be option picked by majority of people's representatives and execution of that chosen path done by bunch of experts of their fields and bureaucrats who run governmental institutes and is overseen by cabinet of ministers which consist of representatives, bureaucrats and experts multiple fields. So we need experts to give us possible exits strategies from which we (our representatives) can pick one which we think is best for us and then let experts in our institutes to do and give guidance what is needed to execute that strategy.
  8. In my understanding unclaimed are buried in mass graves instead of incinerated because policy to give their families ability to claim bodies in later date. Also in tv series cops always find evidence helping them to catch serial killer from some poor soul buried in the mass grave whose death was not properly investigated, which may or may not have influenced officials in their decision to keep using mass graves.
  9. I wonder why there are people who trust conspiracy theories and don't care what scientific evidence says
  10. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/intelligence-report-warned-coronavirus-crisis-early-november-sources/story?id=70031273 "As far back as late November, U.S. intelligence officials were warning that a contagion was sweeping through China’s Wuhan region, changing the patterns of life and business and posing a threat to the population, according to four sources briefed on the secret reporting." Is it really intelligence if it is only read when people do retrospect analyze?
  11. It is only mentioned that help from Pentagon by sending letter to 20-30 people
  12. According NYT's article Captain Crozier had repeatedly asked his superiors to make speedy action to evacuate the ship and because there was no action made to evacuate the ship he sent letter to 20-30 people in different high positions of government to ask help. Said letter was then leaked to press by somebody who received it. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/03/us/politics/coronavirus-brett-crozier-theodore-roosevelt.html
  13. Funny thing is that he doesn't need to attract people all over the spectrum in case he is selected as democratic candidate, as democratic candidate regardless of anything will win blue states in over 90% probability and lose red states with same probability and in battle ground states it is usually question of tens of thousands voters who decide which party's candidate wins. And before current crisis Bernie would had had quite high change to win against Trump in those states , as in those states question isn't usually which candidate success to attract more people but which candidate repels more people from their side.
  14. It is quite understandable when you look for example how DNC's and GOP's primaries are tied to local elections and are organized in many states by state official instead of party official and how they get covered by media. It is extreme difficult to get elected even on city council as non-establishment candidate in countries where multi party system is part of political establishment, and it is even more difficult in first-past-the-post voting and even more difficult in USA because of how much everything is build around two party system. There is reason why Sander tries to get democratic nomination instead of going as independent candidate.
  15. Before Boy wonder's speech After Boy wonder's speech It is nice how you can avoid responsibility with change couple lines text in web page
  16. Boy wonder's answer gives me new understanding why GD doesn't like federal government
  17. Case show why EU can't help in member states during crisis, as minor help for country suffering crisis needs 5 years fight in courts and even after highest EU court rules against them, said member states proclaim that they will not offer help they have agreed (noted that agreement was given under political pressure) to give, even when there is already another crisis ongoing
  18. Huawei's strategy is to offer it stuff so cheap that their solution is picked over over other solutions in order to ensure that their standard is what dominates. Meaning that evil commies are out capitalizing, freedom loving capitalists
  19. That is not really true, as diseases that have named after place are rarely named after place where they actually originated. Like Spanish flu originated from USA, but it is called Spanish flu because Spanish reported about it when other countries were busy to kill each other in WW1. West Nile fever/virus was discovered in Uganda which is source of Nile and most of thee Uganda including are where discovery was done is locates east side of White Nile. Zika fever/virus is named after Zika Forest in Uganda, even though it was first found on human in Nigeria, because it was first found from monkey in cage in Zika forest. Also Covid-19 (Corona virus disease 2019)/ SARS-CoV-2 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2) was not named after place where first cases of it were identified, although as current official naming convention produced name that don't have easy vernacular nickname (like SARS or MERS or swine flu / bird flu) some people insist to call it names that don't actually help to identify it but with their political agenda. And lots of people really don't care what its name is and just call it corona, even though there is billion different corona strains, but people seem to still know which disease people are referring to.
  20. It is good to see that journalist are at fault on what is written in opinion piece by person who is not a journalist
  21. In Finland they opened our apocalypse vaults (security of supply storages), in order to ensure that hospitals will not run out of protective gear, as for reasons those vaults contain among other things millions of surgical masks and protectors, which were running out until someone remembered that we actually have more than enough stored for in case of bad day.
  22. Yeah governments don't have any other means to collect money than borrowing money until economy crashes
  23. I have lived through time when my country's economy crashed because of our national debt and people's individual debts rise too high and our government had to nuclear options to give any hope for recovery. I can say that those weren't fun times. In comparison 2000s global economic crises were minor inconveniences.
