And apparently if you let the arms dealer go, the terrorists in later missions are better equipped (!)

Maybe I'm just not reading this right, but it looks like MT has 367 AP (Alpha... Points?), with which he can max out his whole character sheet (with the upgrades costing 3-6 points). Was that just there for the demo, or am I misunderstanding the advancement system?

    No dialog examples, though.

  2. "Santos", "Donner", and "Pope"

From The Big Book of Movie Grunt Names, 1989 ed.

    Santos

    Male

    Heavy Weapons Guy

A Santos is a true warrior. He will dive head first into certain death to save his comrades and wields numerous and potent one-liners. He is disciplined, but not above cracking under extreme psychological duress, which he will typically face. A Santos is not a good negotiator, preferring to respond to a parley with heavy firepower. He is a frequent cause of catastrophic yet populist blunders involving shooting something or someone at a very unfortunate time. He will eventually sacrifice himself to save others, prompting his remaining comrades to desperately yell "SANTOS!!!". The Santos is frequently at odds with a lieutenant, even more so than most grunts. He is friends with the Marquez, other Santoses, and most other Heavy Weapons Guys and Gals.

  3. I would have assumed the higher cost is due to movies needing hundreds of employees, gigantic studios and sets, equipment costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, special effects with much higher quality standards than games, on-location shooting including transportation and housing of cast and possibly crew...

Movies are much more logistically complex than games. Not to downplay the effort and expense of mocap and voice recording, but games are primarily developed by a few dozen guys in an office environment.

  4. "Near the end of the day, the focus changes: How do you manage thousands of lines of dialogue in advanced conversation systems? We will tackle this daunting question head-on."

Neat. And damn, it's 8 hours long.

  5. Are any of the Obsidian folks going to GDC this year? Is SEGA going to be pimping AP in some form? Will we ever see a shot of your flowchart dialog editor?

  6. I do not think this is asking for a whole lot. Really. Apparently though it is. Women cry about wanting to met a 'nice guy' and don't want 'games' yet they really don't want that. They more times then not (I lost count how many times I have seen this with my own eyes) will go for the bad boy who's going to treat them like dirt rather then the stable guy who will treat them well. They will kick the decent guys to the curb for the 'edgy' guys then 3 months later whine about how unhappy they are and wonder why.

It sounds like you were boring her. That's generally what the "nice guy finish last, they only want jerks" sentiment implies. She found you boring and didn't have the intestinal fortitude to tell you this because she was an immature, game-playing waste of your time. She wanted you(r johnson) back intermittently afterward to improve her self-esteem, of which she has little. You imply that you acquiesced. Bad move, but such is life. It's the crappy relationships that you (by which I mean I) remember best, especially the ones that I made crappy or help to become crappy.

I don't try to use all the best lines, nor do I play the games. And that probably is the issue. I NEED to play games, play harder to get, not be so honest and upfront and do all the things that in the end the girls may say they don't want but apparently really do. Frankly stop being a decent, nice guy. Too nice it seems.

You just need to be a better judge of character. Don't hang on to relationships out of pity or compassion. I don't mean act like a jerk, just act with more self-interest. Women don't want servants.

  7. It got dull after a couple of hours, but I turned off the respawn points and it got fun again. Then towards the end, with the super leatherhead splicers, it got less fun again. I stood in front of one with both of us firing tommy guns into each other's faces. I emptied an entire clip of anti-personnel rounds into his head before he died. Another one took 10 grenades to kill. It just became an issue of headshotting with the crossbow (which was as overpowered as the crossbow in HL1, but with ammo for it everywhere).

  8. Ron Gilbert made some point and click adventure games for kids after he left LucasArts. A couple of them, Freddi Fish and Pajama Sam, were re-released on the Wii. Of course you could get them off of ebay for your PC for $0.50 or so, but if you want them on the Wii they're available for about $20. Naturally there is some "clicking", but pretty much anything she clicks on the screen will react in some amusing way. They really helped my son learn how to use a mouse, so they should probably do the same for your daughter... for the wiimote... for whatever that's worth.

edit: Oh wait, "almost two". You may be expecting a little too much.

  9. SUPREMELY DAPPER MOUSTACHE

Your facial hair is well kept to such a degree that it seems to radiate charm and grace. You gain a +2 charisma bonus to all Diplomacy, Gather Information, and Bluff checks.

Prereqs: Must have at least 10 sentences on your character sheet describing your facial hair

    BLADED MOUSTACHE

Your facial hair is well refined; enough to hide several hidden razor blades within it. You may use your facial hair as a natural weapon that deals damage according to size (ie. Chaplin: 1d4, Standard Lip Caterpillar: 1d6, Standard + VanDyke: 2d4, Handlebar: 1d6+2, Mutton Chops: 1d8, Full Beard: 1d10, Rutherford B. Hayes: 2d6, Van Winkle: 4d4. Intermidiate sizes and variations are at the DM's discretion.) Your facial hair requires half an hour of grooming per day to maintain its sharpness. Failure to do so causes the loss of this attack until you are properly barbered.

    Prereqs: Supremely Dapper Moustache

    SCOFFMASTER

Dark, bloody and ardurous training has enabled you to wield the art of scorn. You easily drive your opponents to senseless fury, with your short bursts of vocalised contempt, with effective cheek gymnastics and eyebrow curling.

Gain +6 to taunt checks, but only if the opponent(s) is within fifty feet and within line of sight of your face. This bonus lowers to +3 you are using a language that the target(s) is not proficient in.

You may increase this bonus to +8 if you elect to and successfully hit the target with an unarmed strike(slap) immediately after the taunt action.
