I'm unfamiliar with the concept of "character derailment", but you can at least recolor your clothes in BG2. The trick is to choose the mods that you like, just like everything else. If a mod causes "character derailment" don't use that one, there a like tons of them.

Mods are awesome and a big reason to still play PC games, also you can tweak/disable every one of the things that come with it.

Flipping that around, think how much racial discrimination there would be if dogs were the dominant intelligent species on the planet.
