  1. Fallout 2 was my first RPG, and in that game you don't even have to fight. I didn't realize how bad combat in it was until I ran across an Enclave patrol that destroyed my melee character (even though now I know melee builds are viable, just need to be smart about it). I accidentally found the "win" button in Fallout 2 early on (eye shots with precision rifles), and that made combat completely broken. in any other game I would've stopped playing, I stayed for locations, quests and dialogues

  2. I do tend to agree with the Codex that you need to have potential 'broken' builds. That's part of learning games and improving in them, and the alternative is what?

while I can see where you're coming from, and learning how a game works can be rewarding, ultimately as soon as I learn the most effective way to build/play my character I soon lose interest in the game. it basically kills any desire in me to replay it.

I'd much rather have the ability to play through the game with any class/build and not worry about being stuck on some encounter mid-way through the game.

as a recent example, I almost quit KOTOR 2 trying to play a dual laser pistol build. until you have a few Attack+ feats learned and DEX well above 20 playing it is a nightmare. I was saved by my other force users in most fights, but there are instances where you have to fight alone, and there were several fights I just couldn't beat without some "cheese".

  3. So the 'Codex position' is essentially that balance should not be an end in and of itself, it's only a positive when it contributes to the game being enjoyable. If an obsession with balance results in a lack of fun then it's not actually an asset for the game to be balanced, it's a weakness.

to be more specific, the Codex wants attributes and character progression to be designed in a way that allows broken character builds. your character is too weak and you cannot advance in the game? your own dumb fault for not reading tutorials/guides. your character is too powerful and blazes through every encounter? your own dumb fault for developing him that way.

basically, that's what most people find enjoyable - or so they think. which is absolutely not the case. I could never understand this irrational position, but I also think it would've never been an issue if Sawyer hadn't given any insight into how he designed his systems. people just started to freak out even before the game was available, and then it was so much easier to find something validating their complaints.

I mean, they think Arcanum is the best game ever, and that game had probably the worst combat I've ever experienced.

  4. Right now I feel that you are comparing apples to oranges, they are different games with different genres and different goals.

yeah, that's the whole point. I did say I like it more despite being a different kind of game. they're both still Obsidian RPGs, so I don't think it's unfair to compare them.

incidentally, I like oranges more than apples.

as for combat in KOTOR II, I'm playing a gunslinger, and it's anything but unoffensive. I am only now beginning to be any kind of threat to enemies, after getting ALL ranged combat feats and my DEX to 30. it's painful when you see your character miss 80% of all attacks, and then watching enemies with vibroswords deflect the other 20%

  5. I like New Vegas more simply because I prefer this type of game to "classic" PC RPGs. even though New Vegas arguably has worse writing than KOTOR II, I still have more fun with NV - as a game. KOTOR II works better as an interactive novel (this is what those hacks from Tell Tale Games should be striving to make)

  6. So, I'm playing in Steam with workshop content installed (Restoration mod). After getting the Ebon Hawk from that Jedi lady on Telos's pole if I try to travel to Telos Citadel Station the game either minimizes and stops responding or I do get to see my character, but I cannot interact with anything and I can't alt-tab, only Ctrl+Alt+Del and kill the process.

anyone know what's going on? am I basically doomed to restart the game?

UPDATE: I was able to travel to Dantooine, but the same thing happened when I tried to go from Dantooine to Nar Shadaa.

I wonder if there's a pattern, and I can reach any place in several hops, or if it's random, and I should just keep relaunching the game and trying. I'll test different combinations tomorrow... and maybe look for similar issues on Steam's community hub

  7. testing out all the fighting styles themselves doesn't justify playing through the whole game several times, though. you can simply reload the game a few times before allocating points and see all of the styles that way.

I'll tell you this: if the game had several different plot lines (for example, three different quest hubs you'd only be able to visit if you missed the other two) - each spanning 15 hours for a total of 45 hours of content - I'd love this game as well. I'd much rather play one short 15-hour campaign in an interesting setting than endure 60 hours of a game like, say, Dragon Age 2.

but on its own JE's campaign just isn't good enough to get me to play it more than once. I also liked the setting, I liked the combat system and would gladly play a bigger better JE 2.

EDIT: oh, and the demon forms saved my ass a few times, when my other styles wouldn't damage certain enemies (they also provide immunity to certain status effects, which also helped in a few fights).
