  1. Knowing the tastes of some of the folks on the forum, this might be of interest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qab3TMg42k
  2. I think part of the attacks have been in the style of "Hollywood can constantly cast middle-eastern actors as terrorists, but they can't find one to play Aladdin?" To which my response is generally, Hollywood has been casting English actors as criminal masterminds for decades. Learn to live with it. The bad guys usually have the best and most quotable lines.

  5. Oh, one that might interest Hurl.. Teacher shortage in Hawaii opens 1,600 jobs for those willing to relocate
  6. Still juggling assorted bureaucracy to see what I can do about student loans and tuition fees for the return to university. But while I'm about that, did have a general conversation with the course leader about getting ready for the course before the semester starts in September. My somewhat faded skills with the likes of Ada and Cobol are a wee bit un-useful, so I'm focusing on the data science and analysis units more than the hard core advanced programming. But I still need to sit down and get to grips with Python, R, and re-familiarise myself with current SQL. However, the weather has turned muggy, and some authors have released some new books so procrastination is calling quite firmly on this afternoon.

  8. Said form of Time Lords has always been bipedal humanoid. The main difference being two hearts which generally isn't a highly visible feature. Across the decades the show has run, Time Lords have invariably spoken with a British accent and the majority have been white. But, there have been female and male Time Lords shown in varying positions of power/influence. I'm not bothered by the fact that a woman has been cast in the role. As long as it's written interestingly and with decent character. If it's done pretty much as a "Look how shiny and modern and feminist we are!" instead, that will be a letdown. Most of the Doctor Who stories should work without regards of if the Doctor is male or female, if it starts turning into a hanging point for it...
  9. To be fair, Thor not being worthy to wield Mjolnir has a history with the character. Wasn't that part of the original reason Odin kicked him to Earth and trapped as the simple human Doctor Blake until he'd learnt some humility. Part of which they used for the first Thor movie. I seem to recall they've bounced that concept around a few times, as well as introducing a handful of other characters that were worthy enough to wield the hammer.

  14. Let's do a slight detour for the random political news.. The White House just responded to concerns it would release voters’ sensitive personal information by releasing a bunch of voters’ sensitive personal information. Vox - The White House just posted the emails of critics — without censoring sensitive personal information
  15. The Tourist. It's somewhat slick, has some gorgeous visuals of Venice, and is just a touch silly. Depp and Jolie don't have great chemistry, but they make it work as best they can. Paul Bettany is great as the obsessive Inspector, and Steven Berkoff doing another good turn as a somewhat chilling and disturbing crime lord. It does feel like they've tried doing a call back to the classic Cary Grant era style of film, but haven't got it gelling quite well enough. But still, I think it's one of those guilty entertainments.
  16. I think my trouble with the new Hitman was getting it when it was being released months apart. On a gaming level, the design is excellent. Large maps, so many ways to complete the missions. But then they had barely any story to hang it all together during the first three episodes released. And after the 7th or so elusive target it was "eh, I've done these maps a bunch of times already and again, there's no real story to enjoy just the pure gaming of it." Then having to wait 3 months for the next section to be released...
