  1. If we end up calling the military and maybe introducing a few new riot laws, who's to say how the government will use them in the event of a genuine political protest in future? We already have laws that cover this and the police already have all the equipment they need, they're just not using them, yet.

  2. But maybe this indeed is a statement of 'If you don't want us to be pro-active, this is what happens' so London increases their priviledges. In that case the Tottenhammers only reach the opposite of their goal. Not that the current rioteers share that goal anyways...

I did ponder that, it seems very odd that the police appear so impotent during this.

  3. And to be quite honest, I don't see the big issue here. So there are some dumb**** adverts around, does the gameplay suffer if one see "Coca Cola" on a bulletinboard? It's not a thing to elaborate and enjoy, but I see no harm if it doesn't feel forcefed and if it can be ignored as background fluff.

I can handle a simple "Coca Cola" or golden arches here and there, odds are those plague bearers are going to stay with humanity for a long time, it's the idea of localised current day adverts being mindlessly rammed into the gameworld that irks me.

More designers should base game protagonists on themselves.

Imagine how cool DA2 would be if Hawke looked like David Gaider or Mike Laidlaw.

I'm thankful that he didn't, though I have to admit that I couldn't shake the feeling that I was living out Gaider's homoerotic fantasies during DA-O, it was a post of his about writing romance that did it, how he wanted big powerful arms pushing him against a wall...or something.

  5. It's obviously a genuine expression of discontent, when every new job at Tesco has 40 applicants you know things are going to get nasty eventually, when times are bad people desperately want distractions like a big TV and a crate of booze, which is what I think this one comes down to, desperate grabbing hands trying to get free distractions.

    *edit*

If this was political protest directed at the ruling class they'd have been marching on Downing St and the banks...not Argos.

  6. I'm not entirely sure how I'll react if this turns out to be true, for a game that's been selling itself partly by philosophising about corporate power it seems wrong, I might have to cancel my pre-order if there's no way around it :shifty:

  7. Random trivia for the moment.. the explosion of popularity of Bruce Lee films back in the 70' actually led to a large number of the "organised" football hooligans into turning up with sais, nunchuka's, and assorted martial arts weaponry due to the ease of being able to hide it under a jacket..

I always wondered why I wasn't allowed to play with plastic nunchuks and throwing stars as a child.

    *edit*

Well, I knew they were banned but I never knew why.

  8. "Our" football makes at least sense, because it involves feet.

    And ours doesn't cause riots.

Yours is just rugby, played with 40lbs of protective gear and a break every 5 minutes. :)

  9. I don't like how people are labelling these punks as anarchists, they don't deserve the title, they're poor, undereducated people who are so mindlessly desperate for a flatscreen TV to watch Jeremy Kyle that they'll go out and trash the shops, I think this sort of thing will be quite regular during the enforced austerity years.

I have to disagree with anyone wanting the bring the military in, this isn't their job, stop being so fetishistic, the army are not a magical pill.

  10. I still think The Shivering Isles is the best of Oblivion, it was a nicely made world and the quests and dungeons all fitted in, practically every NPC had new dialogue depending on what you'd done.

Fallout 3 blew me away at the time but of course I hadn't played the first two, either way it was a definite step up in world and quest design for Bethesda...apart from the Meresti vampires, uhg.

Oh yeah, the ending too, wtf?

  11. I recognize that the idea that the DB quests and TG quests are better than the rest is a commonly held concept regarding Oblivion, but I've never seen it. ALl the quests are equally ****ty. It's not a problem with them quests themselves, per se, but the utter lack of consequence or excitement to anything in the game world.

I'd have to agree about the lack of consequences, a new building in the waterfront is all you really get for completing the TG quest line and I can't even remember what happens after the the DB quest. The majority of the quests themselves were fun though, I especially liked the subtle way the DB were introduced, a few rumours, a man put in the dungeons for performing rituals and eventually if you happen to murder an innocent, you get the visit from Lucien.

The Mages Guild had to be the most atrocious quest line, utter derp from start to finish as I recall, though I suppose that resurrect staff you get from Mannimarco was a decent reward, I remember going into dangerous (OOO) dungeons and using it to build little armies of undead, leading them on massive rampages into the deeper areas, good clean chaos.

Ouch, looks like the UK is getting shafted, 129 pounds is roughly $212...do I really want a plastic dragon *that* much?

Bugger it, just pre-ordered the standard release for 30 pounds (with release day delivery), plus I get a fancy cloth map, shove your dragon statues up your arse.

  12. Turning into one of those mornings where every time I sit down to get some work done I'm dealing with interuptions of one sort or another that make me get up to deal with. :yucky:

Literally, I sit down at my chair.. have a couple of minutes to start to focus.. and then boom. Doorbells, phone calls, puppy trying to kill the cat, mechanic for my sisters car, family interuptions, needed help.... It's taken me about an hour to drink my cup of tea between it all..

Same here, I've only just now been able to wipe the sweat from my brow.
