  1. yeah GFW gave it a D+ and opened the review with "These boots were made for kicking", i suppose it didn't help that the game had built considerable amount of hype in the run up to its release and then was released with technical problems of a level unusual even for a PC game and too much focus on the physics aspect of the gameplay, still imagine the swordplay/combat of DM with open world and RPG depth of Oblivion, if that had been the case i'd still be playing Dark Oblivion now, has anyone played the 360 version of DM and if so how does it compare to the PC version?
  2. yeah the longer that passes the more likely it is that it's cancelled as opposed to being on hold, but if the being on hold news is true i'd still say there's fair hope for The Crossing, enough about it is familiar that it makes the game approachable while also doing a number of things both in story and gameplay differently enough to make it interesting, then factor in the its association with Valve, and lastly on a more anecdotal note it'd be hella off if Arkane have managed to release Dark Messiah but never get to release The Crossing(though i think DM was considered a failure and could have damaged Arkane's reputation to the point of making it harder to make another game)
  3. no official word of it on the Arkane forums, anyways on hold doesn't mean permanent cancellation, and even if it is all that is needed is another publisher(or for Valve to bring it into their stable) to pick it up
  4. no i think Arkane are just pulling a Too Human/Alan Wake and taking their sweet time
  5. essentialy the idea behind The Crossing is to fuse single player and multiplayer, to make it that instead of two separate modes that you'll instead have a multiplayer mode where you're playing as what would normally be a NPC in someone's single player experience, in short more ambitious then your average multiplayer game but more contained than a MMO
  6. imagine if there was a multiplayer mode in AP where instead of playing as Thorton or even a nameless superspy you were playing as a generic soldier but the twist being you were playing as a generic soldier in someone's single player game, playing as a cudgel going up against a rapier, like it was originally meant to be with Left 4 Dead and is meant to be with the forthcoming(?) The Crossing, in The Crossing single player you're playing as a Knights Templar super soldier but people playing multiplayer commandeer Matrix style one of the cannon fodder SWAT team members in your single player experience with the sole intention of killing you, 1UP preview of The Crossing by the infamous Shawn Elliott> http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/8605 . in the short term i'll be happy if developers just start giving NPCs access to all the things that the main character has, kinda tainted Oblivion for me that so many of the NPCs were so generic and that you so rarely encountered anyone that could seriously challenge you
  7. Yeah it would be nice to be able to drag bodies and then hide them or something. My hope would be that patrols don't walk by corpses and not notice anything suspicious. while it's nice to have the option and can be plenty cathartic after a long day at work it'll be annoying and damaging to the game if gunplay is required not optional. I was under the impression that hiding bodies was something of stealth, not gunplay. just because my post didn't include the words stealth or hiding doesn't mean it wasn't about stealth or hiding
  8. watching a walkthrough from last E3 Thorton's assault rifle and stats were so overpowered that at first i thought he was using a sniper rifle and getting headshots. if Obsidian want to provide a challenge to players they should try to replicate the AI from the Fear games, they managed to challenge using intelligence and squad tactics rather then just giving them a billion hitpoints, one thing i really liked from those games that i'd like to see in AP was the death gunfire and how sometimes an opponent would fire a burst of gunfire even once you had killed them as they were falling to the ground
  9. It's not very realistic, yeah, but I'd take it any day over the DnD crap system, like 3 people swinging swords at a man sized bug for 2 minutes without hitting it. yeah i've had trouble playing the Neverwinter games or any D&D based video game and though it may sound strange i'd attribute my trouble playing those games to Battle Chasers

  11. was just trying to get feedback on other peoples thoughts about SC:C and its redesign and release date which have put it in close competition with AP, and what if anything Obsidian should do to remedy the above
  12. "both being stealth shooters from a 3rd person perspective, both being released in fall 09", and i'd class the difference in end results from independent game developers and huge game factories as being a judgement call, PoP and AC were two of the most popular and well received games in recent years, and while i didn't enjoy either of them i respect what they did in terms of gameplay and story, i'd go so far as to say that both were experimental, something you wouldn't have seen from one of the giant publishers/developers 5 years ago
  13. Alpha Protocol's definitely won't get crazy sales like Splinter Cell Conviction during that season. However, there's a possibility in the long run that it might keep up with the sales with an established a new fan base. With that in mind that Alpha Protocol's as good as we expect it to be, Beta Protocol will have much better sales, followed with Gamma, Ephilson, Zeta and by the time it reaches Omega Protocol, I suspect it will have similar sales to Conviction. well from what i've seen even AP is going to require a good deal of suspension of disbelief (cougar mercenaries and one eyed Arabs), and i seriously doubt that there will ever be six Protocol games what with Obsidian being a company best known for continuing ip's started by other companies and Sega being like a boxer that has fought one too many fights, but here's to hoping
  14. yeah and most people aren't going to buy 2 spy games in the same season, and what H
  15. The International is a great espionage film, it makes the Bond films look (even more) club handed. does anyone know if you can customise Thornton's facial structure? if you can i'm going to make my character look like Clive Owen
  16. I see your CSI and raise you an Untraceable (about halfway down the page, can't find the unimbedded clip) i watched Untraceable but only because at the time it thought it was a Tarsem Singh film
  17. *shrugs* they're both Luc Besson produced so neither of them are exactly going to be of Fellini levels production wise, but if i had to choose between the two i'd give KOTD the advantage. Taken was just too dry and took too long to get started, the cinema where i saw it a lot of the men in the audience seemed to be pretty pumped and as they were leaving a lot of them seemed to be discussing the coolest scenes from the film but personally i just thought it was pretty meh. My take on the story is mostly the same as my take on the production values, Chinese super cop who's flown out to Paris to assist in French police operation to arrest a Chinese international finds himself without his passport and gun in a country where he doesn't speak the language with both police and criminals trying to kill him, he encounters a woman who like him doesn't speak the language and is likewise in a dire situation and decides to help her not because it might benefit himself but because it's the right thing to do versus washed up former CIA operative who has a daughter he's starting to lose touch with, she's kidnapped while in Paris so he hops on a plane and cracks some skulls, i'm siding with KOTD for story. KOTD also had one of the best film soundtracks i've ever heard, a soundtrack that was incredible in the context of the film, and as good when listened to by itself or even a single track. I guess that i just watched it at the right time, i was most probably in my teens and managed to sneak into a showing and i was at that age where i was starting to take a serious interest in music and film, had seen a number of Li's previous films (none of which i had partically enjoyed) and a number of Besson films (which i had very much enjoyed) and i liked it so much that nearly ten years later it still stands out as one of the best films i've seen and has developed into almost a ritual of watching it every year or two after on television, i'd most probably still put it in my top ten favourite films (along with such films as Russian Ark and The Cremaster Cycle).
  18. Never saw it actually, it's on the list now. I did think Taken was pretty badass though, and while Jet Li is obviously a better martial artist Liam definitely has better acting chops. the whole idea behind Kiss of the Dragon was to make a more realistic Jet Li film, less wire work. both Taken and KOTD are set in Paris, KOTD takes less time to get going, and where Neeson's character is retired Li's character is still very much active(also the premise of a Chinese spy is more fresh then just another former CIA operative), also felt like a waste of Neeson's acting talent, and though tacky i like how in KOTD every fight scene is like a boss battle and has a unique angle to it e.g fighting a Dojo full of police officers in Karate gi's armed with tonfas or in another scene fighting a giant shirtless black bare knuckle boxer
  19. i've heard a lot of praise for Taken but doesn't anyone think Kiss of the Dragon was superior?
  20. someone mentioned Mamet's Redbelt, also by Mamet is Spartan with Val Kilmer, and its very much steeped in the black ops/espionage setting. surprised that no one has mentioned The Man From U.N.C.L.E., was a long running 60's spy show with a healthy dose of humour often showing itself in the form of the two main characters ineptitude. another spy show which was very good but more recent was Intelligence, a Canadian show that ran for two seasons focusing on the internal and external conflicts facing CSIS and a Vancouver based criminal organisation, essentially think The Wire but more watchable and with a greater emphasis on espionage
  21. i know you couldn't in the Splinter Cell and Hitman games but can you pick up opponents weapons?
  22. almost forgot how about single shot weapons? http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/g2ContenderPistols.php
