It's like the best attack in the entire series...in terms of name and theme anyways. I'm otherwise fond of the Love Me Chain, of course. Roger that regarding the weird/weaker Sakura episode.- 525 replies

My i7-4770k lasted about six years, which is probably pretty close to how long this new 5800x will last me as well. Still, competition's good for both prices and driving these companies forward. I shudder to think of where we'd be right now if AMD had continued to languish after Bulldozer and Intel was still going "ha ha ha, 4 cores and 8 threads is good enough for anybody and everybody...unless you'd like to spend $700 on our terrible extreme series models?". Temperatures are getting kind of crazy, though - that's definitely been a trend as of the last ~5 years. I can cool my 5800x with a ~$60 air cooler just well enough, but if we ever come to a day where all the higher-end CPUs require water-cooling in order to get even baseline performance, that'll be exactly when I stop getting the higher-end CPUs. Maybe we'll have better cooling technology that doesn't involve water by then, though...

What You've Done Today - But you… have elected… the way of… pain!

Wow, you saying this brought back a sudden rush of memories from when I was...~13 years old and was swimming out on a California beach and didn't realize I had gotten sucked out way past what was safe. I only noticed because I had been out there for a while and realized I was quite exhausted and turned around back to the shore and saw just how far away I was. My mom told me later that she had been screaming at the top of her lungs to come back, but I hadn't heard her because I was too far away. Maybe the closest I ever got to dying (or at least being aware that I was going to), although perhaps I would've been rescued...I'm not sure. I remember it feeling like it was impossible to stay afloat, and just a kind of utterly complete exhaustion when I finally got back. Don't recommend. Still happily went back later, although I was definitely a lot more hyper-aware of where I was from then on. -
That's the thing that's wild to me - he could've left it at a few sentences about being allergic and it wouldn't have been great, but we all could've moved on without too much controversy even if people still doubted it. Instead, he was super-ultra-mega-uber-mondo-defensive and went on a full anti-vaxxer rant for like 20 minutes while the entire world was watching. I had to turn off the video while I was watching it live because of how embarrassing it was. Meanwhile, Pat McAfee was sitting there in a sort of stunned silence while the insanity just continued to crap out of Rodgers' mouth and he couldn't stop Rodgers from self-immolating. Just so unnecessary and gross.
-
And it got worse. Do I even still want to watch the Packers? ...Good lord.
-
Aaron Rodgers got on the Pat McAfee show just now to explain his side of the story, and basically opened up with "I'm allergic to an ingredient that's present in both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, and the CDC literally says not to get the vaccine if you are allergic to them...and at the time of consideration, my only other option was the Johnson and Johnson shot, which was in the process of being pulled for some potentially dangerous side effects". I wish that he had stopped talking there, because while that explanation may not have been even close to anywhere "great", it would've at least left me with a better feeling than where it lead to, which was "cancel culture", "**** the protocols", "my good friend Joe Rogan", "if the vaccine's so great, why are you worried about me, bro", et cetera. What an unmitigated disaster.

As you said, the reality of the story was that he actually lived and essentially wrote the story as an apology...and maybe confession? His childish pride combined with the heavy guilt no doubt creates the unusual characters and story. Interesting that Takahata specifically stated that he wanted to "dispel" the idea that characters like Seita and Setsuko were somehow "more noble" than normal people of the modern age. Even in desperate times, people still make plenty of stupid and life-altering/ending errors of their own making. I had thought about it more, and more came to the conclusion that animation is a wildly varied medium in of itself - some animation would definitely be closer to comics/manga, but other animation would be closer to live action, so it kinda just depends. Regardless, between all the different moving parts involved (changing medium, direction, actors, music, style, what you to decide to keep or cut, all of it - adaptations/remakes of all kinds (books, comics/manga, movies, television, games, it doesn't matter) are inherently unlikely to satisfy those that loved the original. Those that do that are also attract new fans are unicorns. As for live action that successfully made a good adaptation from animated... Uh, I have absolutely nothing. Yeah, but what about being angrier than [the character known as] Black Lady?- 525 replies

I despise college ball, but I keep up with it to see what teams are doing well, as it impacts the NFL. The tiny speck of interest I had went like dust in the wind as soon as I saw the CFP Committee release its rankings. Combined with every else wrong with it, it's a joke of a "competitive" sport.

Yeah, actually, the more I look at these power efficiency numbers, the more I am underwhelmed. Being the performance king by 5-10% will be enough to get people to at least start buying them again for gaming, since that's usually what desktop gamers care the most about, but when I see the 12900k having literally almost twice the power draw of the 5950x when actually stressed, I am not so pleased.

For sure. I always love it when I watch a great new movie with nobody I recognize - they are forever their characters for me, that's how I remember them. Furthermore, I am oddly way more attached to specific voice actors than I am to actors - it is so incredibly rare that I would ever go "yay" at the thought of a specific actor being in something, whereas literally just that happens all the time in animation with voice actors. While I am ludicrously picky about art and animation styles, the entire medium is just much more my thing than live action for a lot of reasons, so live action remakes will always be...a very difficult translation for me.- 525 replies

Power efficiency still looks kind of booty, but it's progress. If they can't get the efficiency crown for now, at least they can get the top performance crown.

Man, I'm tempted to say that I think comics/manga are closer, as a medium, to animation than live action television is, but I guess that's a pretty difficult determination to make, even for just my own personal opinion...but regardless, you're right - so what're the chances that a one out of a million chance will happen again? This reminds me that I need to check out the Sakura manga at some point. That's a fair point...to a degree. I mean, I'm a person that is just naturally, inherently drawn more to animation as a whole than to live action, so you're kind of barking up the wrong tree with that line of thinking for specifically me, but what you're saying is sensible.- 525 replies

Live action vs. animation is just too different of a medium. It's not completely impossible that it could work, but they'd have to change a lot as well as do everything just right, and...yeah, it'd be an impossible task, it always is, that's why everything that's remade is almost always, always terrible. Heck, most of the things remade in the same medium are terrible, never mind crossing mediums, never mind whoever's doing it deciding to change style or direction and all that rot...- 525 replies

I can't come up with a concrete answer, so let's just say they're equally scary, but maybe for slightly different but difficult to pin down reasons. But at a glance, K-On looks a little more appealing. Nobody ever let me out of the well after Big Trouble in Little China - I'm still down here!- 525 replies

Why was I under the impression their names were Jin and Gin? I've noticed Fuu calling him Mugen, but I figured that was just a nickname because Jin and Gin is confusing.- 525 replies

I just went back and checked, and it was the same guy who recommended Bloom Into You, among others. They listed it as a "classic of classics". Should've waited for me to try it first and be like "NOPE, NEXT!", . Utena, as frustrating as it was, was significantly more interesting and fun that that. There's not really much of an overt connection to "hip-hop culture" in this show...I think? At least for me, it's more of an...atmospheric thing, and kind of ties into our characters being poor and starving "low-lives" on the run - stuck in dirty, corrupt, and desperate circumstances not really of their own making. I am one of the biggest haters of hip-hop, and somehow it works and feels right to me. Really, the biggest offenders for me are the intro and outro music, though I've kind of mostly gotten used to them - all the rest of the music in the show is much more subdued and appropriate than that (well, except for the one beat-boxing toadie from a few episodes ago, but that was entirely for humorous effect and was actually pretty funny). All I can say is try it out and watch the first three episodes and if you don't like it at all by then, stop watching. ...Wait, who am I talking to again? Yeah, you even got people from outside the anime thread and in the TV thread going out of their way to recommend it, in addition to both KP and I loving it. Plus, we have to see whether you hating a show I think is great triggers Third Impact or not, . Speaking of... Samurai Champloo, episode 9: Why did the government official eat his own snot? ...There are many other questions I could ask about this particular episode, but this seems the most pertinent. Jin Gin episodes are weird...but it's strange, this show has taken a male character type that I almost always, always despise and made it so that I do like him. Episode 10: These guys are literally always starving. Nothing a little hard work and nearly getting murdered won't solve...also, what're you talking about, @KP the meanie zucchini? Both of these episodes were Jin-focused... I am the big dumb, Jin is Gin and Gin is Jin.- 525 replies

The TV and Streaming Thread: Now up for syndication...
Bartimaeus replied to Amentep's topic in Way Off-Topic
Maybe I'm misremembering, but I thought the entire book series was pretty heavy-handed on the women being stronger than the men in most meaningful ways, while men are usually weak-minded and controllable. Feel like WoT doesn't really need that nonsense...but I guess people who haven't actually read the series wouldn't know that. -
According to Rapoport, it was an open secret with all the other players on the team - everyone knew, but shockingly it never leaked. Must be the best damned locker room of all time if all 60+ guys knew and all of them were determined to not leak it and not let it be an issue. And the team brass and the NFL brass knew as well, since the Rodgers camp and the NFL had corresponded over it and trying to persuade them to count him as vaccinated for his homeopathy crap, but they didn't go for it. What a crazy secret to keep up until now...and he may have gotten away with it, again, if he wasn't going out to freaking Halloween parties in direct violation of the unvaccinated covid protocols.

I wasn't sure after the first episode because I was still figuring the show and characters out, but by the third, I was pretty certain it was a good show. I'm through 8 episodes now, and I have...I mean almost literally nothing to complain about, at all. Even the more mature/adult elements and themes are all handled very appropriately - the show has been infinitely more restrained and respectful than e.g. your Nanoha. It's a very funny show with good dramatic moments and well-written characters and dialogue, and I'm interested to see what will happen. The style of the show just feels good in general, and the animation/art are pretty solid. The thing that almost made me not try it out, which is the fact that it's highly upvoted with both the tags "martial arts" and "swordplay", has also been a complete non-issue thus far - there's action in the show, but it's all been well-driven and not routine or predictable in really any sense, and doesn't really occupy that much of the run-time relative to everything else. Like I said before, everything just feels like it works together so well. I don't know for certain if the show will inherently appeal to you, which can of course ruin any show for anybody, but that's something only you can determine. a wot- 525 replies

As Amentep said, because he's a lying moron. At least idiots like Kirk Cousins have the gumption to come out and tell the truth about their position - this dude picked his words so carefully to craft a story with the deliberate intent to deceive everyone. "Are you vaccinated?" "Yeah, I'm immunized. There’s guys on the team that haven’t been vaccinated. I think it’s a personal decision, I’m not going to judge those guys." Nobody in the world except for insane conspiracy theorists would ever reasonably interpret that as anything but him being vaccinated - it's a pretty big breach of trust in player-fans relations, especially when he complains about the team not "going all in" (lmao, you won't even get the vaccine to prevent the worst of this situation possibly occurring, buddy!) and about the media constantly making up "bull****" stories about him (again, you've managed to do that pretty well yourself, pal). And then you throw in very obviously not following the covid protocols and arrogantly thinking he could get away with this lie the entire season...which maybe he could've, if he wasn't literally openly breaking covid protocols as an unvaccinated player to go to Halloween parties. If he got a breakthrough case of covid while being vaccinated, that would be perfectly fine. Would suck to lose him for the one game against the Chiefs, but that's the new life of covid we find ourselves in, I don't expect these guys to stay home alone for the entire lives, and having the vaccine means you're significantly less likely to contract it and almost certainly not going to have any severe symptoms. Flaunting the protocols to go to parties and crap and putting the entire team at serious risk of needlessly losing critical games while talking through the side of your mouth about the front office and the rest of the team needing to be all in? He literally just had a big speech to the team about "carrying the G the right away" over the weekend...what the ****, Rodgers? And never mind we have to hope that he's alright...there are players that had to sit out the rest of the entire season when they got covid early on last year. Just so dumb and deceptive on his part.

What are you Playing Now? Games = Life
Bartimaeus replied to Amentep's topic in Computer and Console
The 4-5 hours requirement is usually to do with map size and complexity as well as backtracking. Metroidvania games tend to have such a heaping of "explore literally every single last corner of every single last square of the map", it's incredibly frustrating and tedious - please make the map manageably-sized, thank you. I also tend to prefer my games on the short side these days regardless, and that's especially true for Metroidvania games which simply isn't my favorite genre to begin with. The melee vs. ranged weapons is not as hard of a rule as the first - it's just what I've noticed after having tried a number of them, I tend to enjoy the ones centered around melee combat a lot more than the ones centered around ranged combat. Probably because the ones with ranged combat very often become a non-stop gauntlet of "avoid an endless amount of projectiles while also trying to constantly be aiming and shooting your own projectiles at the things firing the projectiles" - just isn't really my cup of tea.
