I dont get it - it doesnt get me an option to eat any of the food in my inventory, i can also not double click it or drag it somewhere or do anything with it outside of using it for ship supply....?

You drag and drop food items into the slots next to your player and companion portraits.

I still dont get it i cant drag food anywhere?

When you hit rest you get a screen with companions on the left and your list of food on the right. You just need to drag an item across to each companion.

 

Note that if you rest at an Inn you just get whatever the room benefits are, no food assignment.

Thaaaaats the issue, i only rested in Inns
