Going 18 perception (20 with items) is really useful for every aspect of the game: combat, exploration, dialogues and scripted events. Mechanics is still extremely useful, as is athletics. Survival, streetwise, and insight follow closely. And one of the dialogue skills should always be decent on your watcher. Metaphysics doesn't come up as often, but if you played poe1, you should have some points in it for immersion IMO. A but of INT and RES also helps significantly out of combat.
