Is there a companion with perception high enough to see all traps, or does the Watcher or an adventurer need to do use a 20+ perception build or something?

You need high Mechanics to see traps, this threw me on my first guy

Perception is for conversations and accuracy and the like

Mechanics is for hidden objects/items and traps

both are very important, the mechanics guy doesn't need to be you though and Durance comes with pretty decent starting Mechanics or you can make a guy at an Inn.

In the first game. Now Perception is for hidden objects and traps. You need at least 15 perception i believe, to see all traps and the highest hidden object i encountered was 22 perception.

Perception is god stat anyway so stack that up mate

Maia is a base 17 PER.  Aloth, post 1.1, is 15.  I think Pallegina's and Rekke's are both 14.

Notable: both Svef and Ripple Sponge give 3 + (AlchemySkill)/4 points of PER for a long duration.
