For Deadfire I'm planning on importing my PoE character, an arquebus-wielding ranger with a bear companion.

I found the Apprentice Sneak Attack talent in PoE to be great.

My question is two-fold:

Firstly, to be dealing out the damage, should I be looking at playing a Scout for the Sneak Attack and other abilites or would a single-class ranger work fine?

Secondly, does a Scout play much differently to a Ranger? What's the "feel" of both options?

Thanks heaps,

I do not know if you heard of Scott Lufkin ? He has a channel on YouTube and does some videos on Deadfire as of late.

One of them touches the multiclass you are looking for.

The link is as follows : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Jex-20G41s

There might also be one for being just a Ranger rather than being a Scout. There is definitely some videos with other subclasses, though, if you are interested.

I hope it would prove to be useful to you ! :)

note that while the scout in the video is melee oriented, there is no reason for you not to be ranged(just picka different ranger subclasse).

Personally, I'm getting the impression the Deadfire ranger has to be pet oriented (as in, the majority of ability picks serve the pet) or be multi classed. There just isn't a lot for the ranger to do in the first 10 levels or so.

Mark the target is fine, but if you want real damage from the ranger, you need rogue abilities or something similar.

Do you know you get to see the whole ability tree at character creation?

Yes. I'm not certain of the relevance, though. The first five power levels (character levels 1-10 on a single class character) are pretty devoid of ranger abilities. Lots of companion abilities, plus marked target, wounding shot and a few upgrades. If you want the ranger to do things rather than the pet (especially damage), multiclass is the best option.

Yes, the Deadfire ranger has a lot of its power and gameplay tied to the pet. It's not just some ornamental thing for a ranged class - strong ranger play uses the pet as another party member, and you want to coordinate the ranger and pet to maximize your output.

Scout will give you more stuff to do...but honestly the two classes have a lot of redundancy. Evasive Roll and Escape, Wounding Shot and Crippling Strike - you're delaying access to higher level abilities for the sneak attack bonus and not much else. If you're doing that to avoid making as much use of your pet, well, at some point you have to ask if you really just want to be a ranged rogue.

I'd look at a Ranger/Cipher,Beguiler or Ascendent

You'd get the damage boost of 40% from soul whip, some good Cipher passives, access to Cipher powers and a target (the pet) for all your Cipher powers.

Seems a lot more fun than a Rogue/Ranger, especially if you will be ranged.

I’m actually planning to play a melee scout so I can keep up with my pet and rush into battle with ‘im.

I just like the idea of dashing around the battlefield. (I’ll also have trickster subclass for extra survivability and debuffs)
