I've recently got the itch to start up another run of Pillars, and I want to do a 2hand (generally greatsword) main character. I initially thought Barbarian would be cool, but from what I've read recently it looks like Fighter is a better choice all around for this type of character? Just wondering if anyone can provide opinions about that. I'd like to be mistaken, but the various talents/abilities available to fighters to seem to give them a pretty nice edge over barbs when it comes to dishing out the damage.

Then again, I would be playing on hard with a full party, so I guess doing a build that is not top of the line isn't that big a deal anyway?

Fighter is better vs single target. Barbs do AoE damage. 2hander will work with either class. So whatever class you choose for your Protagonist build the rest of the party around him. If you are choosing the NPCs from the game then Eder already covers Fighter and is accessible in Chapter 1. Maneha the Barbie is not accessible until you go to the WM.

No matter which fork in the road you take I am certain adventure awaits.

They fulfill different roles in the party - yes the fighter is better single target dps. The barb does aoe damage and depending on weapon choice can offer great crowd control as well. So it depends what you want. If you are talking single target dps then a fighters closest competitor is a rogue.

"Those who look upon gods then say, without even knowing their names, 'He is Fire. She is Dance. He is Destruction. She is Love.' So, to reply to your statement, they do not call themselves gods. Everyone else does, though, everyone who beholds them."
"So they play that on their fascist banjos, eh?"
"You choose the wrong adjective."
"You've already used up all the others.”

Besides the valid points Blades of Vanatar and rheingold made I'd generally say a fighter is better in the early to mid game while a barb is better in the mid to late game. Depends a lot on difficulty setting (PotD at higher levels favors barb's AoE approach - because there are a lot more enemies), your party (if you already have a lot of AoE damage but lack decent single target damage and CC you won't need a barb) and the specific role of the fighter/barb in your party - but the high level abilites of a barb are more powerful than those of the fighter (again: generally speaking) while the low level abilites and the better starting values of the fighter are better in the early game. Early game is the hardest part by the way.
