locked characters in quest mode

nsr

Question

I got 2 locked characters in quest mode.  I've tried logging out of gamecenter and relogging in, but it didn't help.  Any other solutions?

I've also noticed that my phone and my tablet don't have the exact same list of characters for some reason, and the 2 characters I created on my phone in order to recreate them. Could this be related?

If the characters has same nick Name... maybe. But Locked characters has normally mean corrupted save game in previous incarnations of the game.

Locked status has nothing to do with a corrupted save.  It is just a flag set in "the cloud" to keep two instances of the game from writing updates to the same character.  It is similar to a PID lock in Linux or SQL.  It works something like:

  • Form a party of unlocked characters (i.e. those not on an adventure somewhere).
  • Choose a scenario/quest/difficulty.
  • Scenario starts, party characters are "locked" for the duration of play.
  • Scenario ends, characters are unlocked again.

The problem is that with multiple devices (or network issues), sync issues can occur between 3 and 4, and characters may remain locked even if their session is over.  It would be nice, but I don't think there is currently anything in place to clean up "stale" character locks.

As far as actually corrupted saves go, the game does a pretty admirable job of working through them.  Bad characters can usually load, but manifest funny behavior like losing all your cards, or having an infinite hand size.  They are usually "playable" enough to at least transfer your cards to new character.

Quite likely.  Bi-directional cloud syncs only appear to happen immediately after you start the app (when you get the "Logged in!" popup).  When playing with multiple devices it is good practice to force-quit every now and then to push a new round of synchronization.

Ok I think maybe this happened when I launched Pathfinder on my tablet for a bit.  I hadn't launched the tablet version in a while since I was worried about the syncing between the phone (I guess I was right).

The cloud sync works really well when you only have one device with a stable network connection (or no network at all).  But the more devices you are logging into, the better the chance that things can get a little dorked up.

The good news is that a "newer" character should never be overwritten by an "older" one, but there's still a bit of potential different stuff to be synced to different devices unless you are really on top of force-quitting the app before you switch between tablets/phones.

Fortunately after patching the characters got unlocked. But my tablet and phone quest character are still out of sync. What points are the cloud syncs updated? Maybe I can force it to happen

Bi-directional syncs (App <--> Cloud) are forced right after you first start the app (i.e. when you get the "logged in" popup).

Otherwise, its usually a one-way affair, where the app periodically pushes updates off to the server (App --> Cloud), but does not receive new updates in return.

Force-quitting the app on each device and opening it back up again seems to be a reliable way to have the same data on each device.
