Radius increase =/= area increase

It seems effects that are supposed to increase your abilities' area of effect by x% increase the radius of these areas by x%, therefore increasing the area by more than 2x%. Intelligence is already the most important stat for most classes but this makes it even more important. It would be nice if you can update the descriptions for this game or in PoE2.

While mathematically correct, I'm not sure it's practical. In the game description you'd have to put in the actual numbers, and since the increase in area is quadratic you get some gnarly-looking percentages (eg. for Int 11 - 15, rounding off, it'd be 12%, 25%, 39%, 54% and 69%). Given that the bonus area is plainly visible in-game, I would say that the effect should be clear to the player. At best it might be something to put into the Cyclopedia description for Intellect.

Yes, the description should say +x% radius. I don't know if developpers used approximative descriptions all over the game because they have poor math skills or because they don't want things too look very technical or complicated.

Come on, guys... no need to be so pedantic. You know what they mean, don't you? By using the word "area" they're covering cone and other irregular AoE shapes like Freezing Rake's that don't really have a radius. You don't really expect them to calculate the area of an oval (even though its width doesn't change), do you ?

 

Having said that, the formula that determines what these 10% increased AoE for each spell really mean is even murkier than the DoT resolution. Most of the time at 21 INT it's actually 8% or close to that (8.16%) which means it's different not only for different INT values but also for each spell.

I focused int on all my created characters anyway, but int being better than other stats for a barbarian for example may be because devs forgot for a second about area and radius relationship. Maybe they can make it so int increases actual area by the stated amount, and have the game compute the appropriate radius for it.

I would assume it is entirely intentional, but that they felt that it would not be sufficiently intuitive for players (which I am inclined to agree with). The bonus area is clearly visible from the AoE indicator, and given the quadratic relation between radius and area the additional increase in area from further increasing INT would look progressively smaller. It could perhaps have been noted more clearly in the Cyclopedia, but other than that it seems fine to me.
