    The evidence repeatedly shows that religion has virtually always and everywhere been a way to legitimize the current authority.

    That's it, in a nutshell. Religion is a fact of life, there is no account of a human community that did not have any set of beliefs, and religion has many applications, one of which can be to mobilize masses of people towards a purpose. And that purpose can range from humane to hateful and vile.
