deniz Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Hello; What does Anni Iroccio calendar use as beginning event? In other words, what happened in year zero? And what are the equivalents of A.D. and B.C.? PoE starts in year 2823 AI. But AI is the name of the calendar, it's not the indicator for years after beginning event, right? Thanks. 1
DreamWayfarer Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Hello; What does Anni Iroccio calendar use as beginning event? In other words, what happened in year zero? And what are the equivalents of A.D. and B.C.? PoE starts in year 2823 AI. But AI is the name of the calendar, it's not the indicator for years after beginning event, right? I'd say it is the indicator for years after the event, in the same way Anno Domini(Year of The Lord) is used in our world. Now, the question is who, or what is Iroccio. I would suspect it is related to BIG SPOILERS: When the newly created gods started to talk and send visions to their followers across the world.
deniz Posted January 27, 2016 Author Posted January 27, 2016 If AI is like AD, then what's the name of the calendar?
AndreaColombo Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 From the lore book: Named after the inventor who studied the motion of the stars, Iroccio’s calendar replaced its less practical predecessors in 2680 AI. The Aedyran calendar was steeped in the traditions of its post-tribal kingdom, and included days of reverence devoted to political stations long since rendered obsolete. According to Iroccio’s observations, Eora takes 334 days (of 27 hours each) to orbit the sun. He divided the sixteen months (of 20 days each) equally by their seasons. Whether or not it coincided with the Aedyran calendar, farms and smaller communities traditionally reserved three days for prayer and preparation between each season. Iroccio factored these days into his calendar, as well as those reserved for celebrating the beginning and midpoint of the year. The names of the months and adjacent days of celebration are listed below with Vailian translations: New YearDeep Winter: Fonivèrno (fohn-ih-VEHR-no)Late Winter: Tarivèrno (tahr-ih-VEHR-no)Spring Dawn (three days): InprimaEarly Spring: PréprimaMid-Spring: MajprimaDeep Spring: FonprimaLate Spring: TarprimaSummer Rising (three days): InestuEarly Summer: PréëstuMidsummer: Majestu MidyearDeep Summer: FonestuLate Summer: TarestuAutumn Falling (three days): InautonEarly Autumn: PréautonMid-Autumn: MajautonDeep Autumn: FonautonLate Autumn: TarautonWinter Dusk (three days):Inivèrno (ihn-ih-VEHR-no)Early Winter: Préïvèrno (pree-ih-VEHR-no)Midwinter: Majivèrno (mahzh-ih-VEHR-no) There are five days in each week, and four weeks per month. Despite using the Iroccian month names, Dyrwoodans and most people in the area (even Vailians) use the traditional Eld Aedyran day names: Godandag (GAH-dahn-dahg, contraction of “Gods’ Day”)Cönyngsdag (COE-neengs-dahg, contraction of “King’s Day”)Mecwynsdag (MEH-queens-dahg, contraction of “Illustrious Queen’s [Consort’s] Day”)Folcsdag (FOHLKS-dahg, contraction of “Peoples’ Day”)Rytlingsdag (REE-tlings-dahg, contraction of “Children’s Day”) 2 "Time is not your enemy. deniz Posted January 27, 2016 Author Posted January 27, 2016 Ok, so the calendar's name is Iroccio's calendar and Anni Iroccio (years of Iroccio) denotes years after the beginning event, like A.D.. Then I still have these questions: - What is used to denote years before the beginning event? - What is the beginning event and why was it chosen?
deniz Posted January 27, 2016 Author Posted January 27, 2016 And A.I. stands for Anno Iroccio, which is singular. When used after a year? People in Eora will be confused when they advance technologically and create artificial intelligence. They would probably call it something else.
Elerond Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Ok, so the calendar's name is Iroccio's calendar and Anni Iroccio (years of Iroccio) denotes years after the beginning event, like A.D.. Then I still have these questions: - What is used to denote years before the beginning event? - What is the beginning event and why was it chosen? Calendar: Anni Iroccio (AI) was adopted in year 2680 AI.It replaced it much less practical predecessor, said Aedyran calendar that was replaced was steeped in the traditions of its posttribal kingdom, and included days of reverence devoted to political stations long since rendered obsolete. Meaning that people don't necessary actually know why calendar was started the day it was started because that event has become meaningless to them, like many other things in old calendar, so they just created more logical calendar that continued where their old ended (year 2680). In other words year 1(or 0) don't really have any significant meaning for people any more they just continued to use same year count because it was convenient1. 1 Of course this is something that can change in PoE2 when Obsidian continues to develop their world more
FlintlockJazz Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 (edited) According to the timeline the human tribe that would go on to form Aedyr was formed in 300AI, so it didn't start with the formation of the Aedyr empire. As the current calendar is Vailian and the creator of said calendar would probably have built off whatever the Vailians were using a the time, I'm guessing it was something to do with their culture, support by the Old Vailia entry on the wiki that states "The Dyrwood calenda (Anni Iroccio) is based on earlier Vailia calendar. The Vailians pioneered cartography and theories of the world's shape". http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Old_Vailia The timeline states that the "Grand Empire of Vailia" was founded around 1300, however that could mean that is when it became an empire, the city state that founded the empire might have been around before then and it's founding might serve as the Year 0 event. This is guesswork though, I get the feeling Obsidian have left it unsaid to avoid committing themselves to anything until they have fully decided themselves, along with a lot of other stuff. Better not to say rather than to say something and then have to retcon it later, just ask Sten's horns. EDIT: And I just noticed that the Darcozzi Paladini are supposed to have been founded in 800 AI, 500 years before the founding of the Grand Empire, proving there was a Vailian culture or at least a pre-cursor to the Vailian culture before then.
