Depends on party compositions .

I personally wouldn't risk an POTD ironman save with full melee party at level 5 against that dragon + adds for example ..

Also - meta-gaming aside, its easy to miss if you do the cave to early and don't "already know" you need 10 mechanics to "find it" .. I know I've missed it first time I did the quest ..

Don't really see the point. It's certainly not easy to get unless you gear and build your team for it and rush there, and even then, you need to know that you can find it there. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Tidefall is one of the few appropriately placed things.

I also missed it on my first run-thru of the game.  I didn't go there all that early, but I was using Durance as my traps/locks guy.  And IIRC, he probably didn't have enough points in Mechanics to spot it, I'm thinking.  Of course, on my current run thru, I have a dedicated traps/locks specialist Rogue custom NPC, and she had no trouble spotting it all ... for which Pallegina is eternally grateful! ;)

Tidefall may not be an official "holy avenger" type of great sword, but it's good enough to certainly feel like one in this game!

Can you sneak to get it, or must some Drakes be defeated on the way? I was pondering this for a solo run, but never got around to trying it out (plus I don't know where the stash is located as I'd never had mechanics 10 getting there either).

I don't think that you can sneak to get it.  This is one of those boss fights that starts with a little forced dialog that triggers when your party passed a certain int on the map.  I don't think that it'd be possible to sneak someone past that trigger point.

It reminds me of Carsomyr in BG2 where you can get it in Act 2, in fact, i like the idea of giving the choice to get a super powerful weapon in early game at high risk. You have the choice to take risk to fight a hard boss to get the reward or you can wait until you have higher levels.

BTW, the map that you find Tidefall on is one of my favorite maps in the game, visually speaking.  I love the cinder-filled wind, and the overall active nature of the visual environment of this lava cave map.  It's impressive.

I agree.  And part of me wishes that it was a paladin's weapon.

That said, given that paladin's can be be either good or evil (regardless of there not being an actual alignment system), it would seem wrong to have such weapon that could be wielded by both good and evil paladins.  And within PoE's structure, about the closest I could see this working is having a mechanic for linking one's ability to wield a weapon or item to the character's dispositions.  However, IIRC, those dispositions only exist for the PC, so unless the game was going to have some fixed dispositional values for NPCs, such a system could only work for the PCs, which doesn't seem like a workable system to me.  Sounds good in theory perhaps, but not workable in the current model of PoE.
