Ongoing discussion of Ukraine

So the bad rebels or whoeever shot down a chopper, killed a Ukrainian general.    With a Russian made AA system (which means Russia is behind it, obviously).

Russia behind a large portion of the events since the Ukrainian Crisis unfolded (directly or indirectly), trying to advance its goal at the expanse of Ukraine, but I didn't see anything about supposed use of Russian AA in that case is the proof of that.

In a recent article Is Russia orchestrating east Ukraine violence? where you can read about some of that recent Russian involvement. Says that the obvious about this incident: "Kiev said the militants had used a portable air defence missile to down the helicopter - not evidence of Russian involvement in itself, however, as the Ukrainian army possesses similar weapons and rebels have seized weapons from the army before."

Although last time they made that claim they later admitted it was small arms fire instead... let's see if that happens here too and how long it takes.

In this case there is video footage showing a rocket trail, and while it is fakeable footage (which 'cannot be independently verified') it seems unlikely to have been rebadged from Syria or anything like that.

While I do not know for sure, I have been told that the bmps that defected early in the crackdown near Slovyansk have a manpad complement, seems likely they would have been used. That would also explain why there wasn't much evidence of AA rocketry when the guys in Donetsk tried to take the airport despite it being sensible for them to use it if they had it there.

Incidentally, you fellahs picked up on the fact that the actual right wing parties in the Ukraine election picked up about 2-3% of the vote? Putin-prop looks a wee bit silly now, doesn't it?

Oh, it gets better.

Yeah, heard about it. It's ridiculous beyond compare.

It's not really ridiculous. It's a carefully orchestrated propaganda campaign by a man who is looking increasingly like your average banana-republic oil dictator.

"I you officially say I'm not a single Chechen there is not sent. If there is an order, we have 74 000 Chechens who are ready to leave, to bring order on the territory of Ukraine," he said, noting "how much noise already raised 14 Chechens".

Kadyrov emphasized that wishing so much that they have to "keep".
"If we would not held, there would not was 14, and 400 or 4 000. Volunteers very much," said the head of Chechnya.

In that Kadyrov said that "if he sent the military in Ukraine, they would have learned not in Donetsk; in Kiev".

"Why I should send someone to Donetsk, if the enemies today in Kiev? If we start to fight against them means they are enemies. You can start directly in Kyiv," he said

It's a bit of irony how Ukraine degradated from high-tech spacefaring nuclear militaristic country 23 years ago into this banana republic and sex-tourist country. Just a "little" help of West. Vae victis!

Guns and fighters seep through Ukraine's porous Russian border

Combatants engaged in last week's fighting say walked into the country 'to visit relatives' at poorly policed checkpoints

[..]

Russian fighter.. "I called up the military enlistment office and asked what I could do. They said people were gathering in Rostov and it may be possible to go to Ukraine. It's not official; they whispered it in my ear, so to speak."

The Russian fighters – including veterans of the military, intelligence services and riot police – formed the core of a new unit called the Vostok Battalion, which took a lead role in the bloody battle for the Donetsk airport last week, in which 33 Russian citizens were killed.
