An ode to Grandmothers

A guy travelled the world and saw what kind of food dear Grandmothers around the world made - a nice little project and I thought I would share. But what about yours?

 

Mine, who died 5 years ago on this day, would make the most delicious apple cake I've ever had.

 

Served with whipped cream and a some vanilla icecream from a local diary.. yum!

Great, now I want some sweet cakes and ice cream, thanks.

 

...I don't remember too much. My father's parents didn't do much cooking. They traveled a lot and I don't recall seeing them a whole bunch. My mother's mom (her husband died before I was around) ... I don't remember her cooking much either, we usually went to some seafood place for dinner ... but I do remember she always seemed to have great breakfast sausage. Pancakes and sausage. Mom's mom was laid back and pretty cool.

 

Now I'm hungry.

My paternal grandmother made divine chocolate mousse. Also fried beef's brains, which, thanks to mad cow disease I will never eat again.

My grandmother would make these really fast skillet-fried pancakes, about 4 inches across. Serve them up with butter and sugar.

 

Everyone in my family misses my grandmother. She was a really lovely lady.

 

Dammit, Ros. Now I'm bloody sad, and it's Friday!

Well I always think that it's a good thing to feel sad, because it means we appriciated the person we are missing and that they made a real connection with us and then I'm happy that I got the chance to get to know them.

She was such a funny lady, as well. We'd always make each other laugh. I remember that despite her being extremely elegant in a 1930s way she did the most fantastic monkey impersonations. She was also very fiercely protective and loyal. She remained in love with my grandfather, who died in the war, right until the day she died herself.

 

It's funny because I hadn't thought about her for a year or more. Food can do that, can't it? Bring things back.

 

EDIT:

 

One thing I always admired about the Zulus is that they commemorate things when they feel like it. Not when a calendar tells them to. Wise move, IMO.

My grandmother is from a time when training to be a housewife was a vocation. She can cook anything well. The mean old battleaxe is still alive too, she'll outlive us all.
