Why NOT have the same people who play Minecraft designing the operational algorithms of our future defenders?

Because players in games never die, obviously.

"Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

But you notice that you can download the flipping game, and then have your expertise incorporated into the project?

Working at DARPA must be awesome.

So let me get this right, they have gamers playing hide and seek/tag with this unmanned vehicle so it will learn from it?

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

Think of it this way: How quickly and effectively did the community of gamers come up with ideal build orders in Starcraft II? Or ideal character builds based on the changes that roll out with a WoW expansion or patch? For all the planning that algorithm writers do, the community of users is always going to find inefficiencies that they didn't anticipate.

The weirder DARPA stuff that gets publicly released is one of the things that occasionally makes me think that the hassle of getting a TS clearance could be worthwhile. Then I remember that I'm an attorney specializing a federal budgetary and accounting law, and realize that they wouldn't have any reason to let me near the cool stuff anyway. And handling classified documents is a huge pain in the arse, anyway.

The problem is whether or not the gamers have perfect information?

BTW are participants getting paid?
