Only new graphics card - won't start

Question

Posted (edited)

Hello,

Some of you may remember my other thread:

http://forums.obsidian.net/index.php?showt...p;#entry1036496

Well, other games were being screwy too when I thought about it - which made me get a new graphics card: ATI Radeon 4850. But guess what... Now the game won't start! All it says is:

"Alpha Protocol has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program."

Please, don't tell me to to re-install. I can't afford another activation because of that idiotic DRM protection!

SYSTEM:

MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+

4.0GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 376MHz

ASUSTeK Computer INC. M4A78-EM (AM2)

ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series @ 1680x1050

As I often do, after you buy the game, just download a crack to get rid of all the pesky DRM and to smooth out your game. If it doesn't have multiplayer and you own it, why bother with the restrictions manufacturers put in there for people that don't buy it.

Heh, but... I bought the game for a reason.

Not a single reply for my support ticket from Sega either...

EDIT: Geeeezzz, I had to re-install: 3 activation tries left (out of 5) SERIOUSLY... Obsidian... ... ... WHY DRM?!

It's not a rhetorical question! WHY?

I'm a retail customer and this is jeopardizing my gameplay!

Lord2, you should now be able to go online and de-activate your first activation. It doesn't matter if your installation is gone - you should be able to get it back.

Right now, as it's still not the US release, details on how to do this are fuzzy: in fact, I don't think you can yet, but should be able to do so soon:

Reinstalling on the same computer should not use a new activation unless the hardware has been changed significantly. It should return the same hash value and then use the existing activation- assuming uniloc works the same way as the SecuROM or Tages versions of activation, at least.

If you haven't already done so, make sure you've fully uninstalled anything associated with the old card and fully updated everything to do with the new one- best to boot into safe mode to do so. It's probably also worth checking whether other installed games, especially newer ones, get the same or similar error or if they work fine.

Oh, one Sega (support) employee told me the game uses activation through the Mac address - meaning I still only have used one; and it's possible to de-activate...?

That makes more sense. I thought I was stuck to not change hardware or anything on the period the protection lasted, Sega have mentioned they'll remove the DRM protection within 18-24 months, I think.

Anyways, thanks! :sorcerer:
