lord of flies
LoF, in the spirit of the thread's initial purpose, I have a query for you: If Communism is so perfect and idyllic, why do they need to build walls to keep their citizens in? Shouldn't they want to stay there, as opposed to, say, heading out to West Germany? With respect to West Germany/East Germany: East Germany was a state created as a punishment to its citizens. For the rest of the communist bloc, honestly? I don't know. I'd assume security reasons; don't want people running to the Westerners and explaining all the awesome communist technical successes. There's also an ideological/emotional reason, in that nobody likes a traitor, and socialism attempts to build a political ideology with some very strong anti-betrayal undercurrents. The fact is that it's not like most of the people in these countries are going to leave anyway, so why not get rid of most of the trouble makers by letting them leave? Killian Kalthorne
It is because no one likes their hard work taken away from them from the state so they force everyone to stay in their country either through physical walls or through the use of propaganda and strict censorship. Just take a good look at North Korea for that. Also the Great Firewall of China is a good example of communistic censorship. I say good on Google to step up against the Chinese government's censorship laws. Tienanmen Square Massacre. Never forget! Never forgive! You can't honestly believe that the threat of exiles is that large, can you? Do you think that enough people in Russia would leave their home country to debilitate Russia's economy? Honestly? For its entire existence (maybe in the beginning with the RCW/recovery)?
Wrath of Dagon
Well the Soviet government certainly thought so, as they wouldn't let any Russians out, except the rare few they deported. Really LOF, sometimes you're shockingly ignorant, but I guess that's the only way you can hang on to your beliefs. Religious fanatics have nothing on you. Trenitay
Nonsense. Religious fanatics can actually implement their ideas. Hey now, my mother is huge and don't you forget it. The drunk can't even get off the couch to make herself a vodka drenched sandwich. Octopus suck.

So, what, if I don't agree with every decision or belief of the Soviet Union, I'm "shockingly ignorant"? I wonder what that makes you... mind-numbingly ignorant, maybe? Gorth
Sounds like we are getting a bit personal again (goes for more than one). I'm closing it since it is getting a bit long and nothing new really seems to have popped up for a while. If there is truly more to ask/discuss, feel free to create a new thread “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt.
