I didnt mean a machine SPECIFICALLY for Call of Duty, more that a monster rig costs a packet, and what am I going to do with all that horse power? Play Crysis? Play the next latest and greatest FPS? Or I could just buy CoD run at 60FPS etc... etc... Don't worry, I'm sure the PC will start to shine again soon, just right now, no point. I came up with Crate 3.0 technology. Crate 4.0 - we shall just have to wait and see.Down and out on the Solomani RimNow the Spinward Marches don't look so GRIM!
Purkake Posted September 23, 2009 Author Posted September 23, 2009 (edited) Since we are still using consoles from ~2005 the tech is pretty much stagnant. Even the cheapest graphics cards can run most cross-platform games reasonably well, unless it's a really bad port. You don't need a "monster rig" anymore to play most games. Also, the Crysis boat sailed a while ago, most modern PCs can play it without problems now. If you really want to use the extra power for something, you could render/encode stuff or just run Folding@Home. Edited September 23, 2009 by Purkake
Niten_Ryu Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Also, the Crysis boat sailed a while ago, most modern PCs can play it without problems now. This is not true unless we're talking about low / medium settings and/or less then 60 fps. If rumors are true, ATI's 5870 card will be first non-SLI card that allow 1080p with 60 fps or higher with all settings very high in Crysis. This is bit under 2 years after Crysis was released. I'm not fan of big screens and especially not in this generation of console tech. Next generation, whenever it'll come will be great as then all games can be 1080p. For me the native resolution, with sharp textures and 60 fps are the most important tech features. Let's play Alpha Protocol My misadventures on youtube.
mkreku Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 I use a DiNovo Edge and a Microsoft Arc mouse when I'm gaming from my sofa in front of my 42" 1080p TV. I have no idea why anyone would prefer a controller instead of mouse/keyboard, since that's practically the only thing that differs. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!

If you really want to use the extra power for something, you could render/encode stuff or just run Folding@Home. I'm going to say this one time. PC code is often extremely sloppy, hence the requirement for more and more resources. I spent enough time speaking with the guys who ported HL2 to PS3 to realise that PC -> Console ain't a very good option. Porting code from a console to a PC isn't a trivial task, you'd think it would be, but actually the environment is vastly different, device/driver layer hell on PC. You'll always get the next big thing in GFX's on a PC, but you won't ever get the same kind of polished experiences on PC. PC game development budgets tend to be alot lower. Then you have piracy... Etc... The list goes on, in short it's not a very attractive platform to develop for when the budgets for games are what they currently are, which is in the millions. I don't recall hearing of many if any PC exclusives that aren't MMO's in the past few years with budgets in the region of $40 million. Lots of console games do have that, and that money, most of the time used wisely by a team, does ensure quality. I came up with Crate 3.0 technology. Crate 4.0 - we shall just have to wait and see.Down and out on the Solomani RimNow the Spinward Marches don't look so GRIM!
Mamoulian War Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 I never thought I'd say this, but I don't even bother with PC games anymore, well unless they're some kinda PC only thing like SOZ. :| Seems that developer life has degenerated me down to the level of a console tard and I'm no longer worthy of being a member of the PC master race! OR MAYBE JUST MAYBE! I have a 50" Plasma TV and my 19" monitor can't compete. I still don't understand why people use this as an argument. There's nothing stopping you from using the TV as your monitor and using the 360 wireless controller if you can't use KB/M on the couch/whatever you sit on. The TV isn't an arguement, I just really have no interest in anything that has been released on PC at all. It's been over a year nearly since anything has been released that has been a PC exclusive that I am interested in. It was more that I haven't even entertained the IDEA of playing Shift on a PC. I don't specifically know why, but for some reason I prefer playing games on consoles, and I was certainly a PC fanatic for oh, atleast 15 years. I can't think of a game that is coming out in the future that is PC only, and interests me. My PC pretty much acts as a file server unless I'm playing something like Fallout or BG or NWN's etc... welcome to the sad panda club Sent from my Stone Tablet, using Chisel-a-Talk 2000BC. Kaftan Barlast Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Well, people who cose to play the console versions of Batman Arkham Asylum really missed out. In full blast 1920x1200 its so mind-bogglingly gorgeous that its hard to believe its real. The console versions have horribly low-res textures and render at 720p. It still looks good, but not OMFGZ!!! good like the PC version.
