LadyCrimson Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 (edited) I don't get it. What's so new and special about it? From appearances, it's just IRC or BB's on cellphones. People can now type "LOL I'm walking down stairs and almost tripped" at anytime, anywhere. Is this actually interesting? Do you find it interesting? Is it the wave of the future of casual world communications or just a fad? I will admit, for myself, that the idea of kinda/sorta communicating with many famous people is vicariously intriguing, even if they mostly see it as publicity rather than convo. http://uk.reuters.com/article/UKNews1/idUKTRE53G5WA20090418 I'd rather talk to sports figures, authors, and politicians then movie stars, tho. Hurlshort Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 It's pretty easy to read and respond to twitters over cell phones, so I think that's the appeal.
Gorgon Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 So, if you twitter regularly, does that make you a twit. Na na na na na na ... greg358 from Darksouls 3 PVP is a CHEATER. That is all.
Kaftan Barlast Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 If you're interested here is my twitter feed where I catalogue my fecal droppings. I forgot to update this week but I can feel one comming on rigt nows so subscribe to https://twitter.com/manloverulesok So, if you twitter regularly, does that make you a twit? Yes, it does. ..and for companies etc., to have twitter feeds its just completely idiotic. 140 words is barely enough to say "had a banana, it tasted funny but alright", its just daft to try and squeeze in news on how a game is developing and so on. I hope Twitter dies out quickly before the whole world turns mad. LadyCrimson Posted April 18, 2009 Author Posted April 18, 2009 I can understand it might be a nice tool to keep in quick touch with family and friends, but as a general chat thingie, it doesn't seem very appealing to me. But then, I still don't "text" either. And I have a hard time being short-winded. All these new fads that I don't "get", they make me feel old. I'm so unhip. heh ..and for companies etc., to have twitter feeds its just completely idiotic. 140 words is barely enough to say "had a banana, it tasted funny but alright", its just daft to try and squeeze in news on how a game is developing and so on. Eh...it's just more publicity for a company. If it helps them in that regard, then why not. Especially when it's free. “Things are as they are. Purkake Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 The trick is to choose who you are following. There are tons of idiots who tweet stupid things like you have said, but there is also a lot of quality content. For example it is way better than RSS feeds at getting cool news. It is pretty much an information filter. It's nice, clean and simple. 140 characters is enough to get your point across, but short enough that people can't write whole pages of pointless crap.
Kaftan Barlast Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I think all these socialising sites are complete rubbish. I dont have myspace, facebook, twitter, linkedin, or a damn youtube account. If my friends want to reach me, Ive got xmp,msn and ICQ. I don't get why people feel like they have to have a myspace/facebook/twitter account. If you don't like it you don't have to use it, nobody is forcing you. Just because you don't like it/don't see the point doesn't mean that it's bad or useless. LadyCrimson Posted April 18, 2009 Author Posted April 18, 2009 All right, I figure I can't knock what I don't try so I experimentally made a Twitter account and posted a few silly/stupid messages. In about 10 minutes, a Spam-bot "followed" me. Not a good sign in my book. The trick is to choose who you are following. There's way too much going on to even begin that process in terms of idle chatter folk. Sure if you want to follow a record company etc. you find/search that easily enough but ... “Things are as they are. Reminds me of that "modding was better..." thread.... ...unless you mean it's going downhill because mainstream = there are too many posts for a sane person to follow. That's pretty much what I meant, too many people coming in just because it's the next big thing and not because it's useful/whatever. It doesn't really do anything if a bot follows you, so who cares? To find people to follow try Wefollow.com to get started. Also, Obsidian has a twitter, as does JE Sawyer. Also I would recommend Felicia Day of Dr. Horrible fame if you want to try out some of the more popular, but still cool people. She also wrote a pretty useful guide to new twitter users EDIT: Oh and (to me at least) twitter is more about keeping up with people/news than expecting to get people to follow you. Don't feel obligated to write stuff for it all the time. Most people use it to comment on other people's tweets than writing stuff themselves. Edited April 18, 2009 by Purkake
LadyCrimson Posted April 18, 2009 Author Posted April 18, 2009 Oh and (to me at least) twitter is more about keeping up with people/news than expecting to get people to follow you. Well, like I said, I can see it for keeping up w/family or something, but then, I can do that with email lists, blogs, the phone, and tons of other "social sites" as well. I'm not sure we need another one. I don't see anything different about Twitter. I'm not trying to say "if you like it you're a dufus" but I personally don't see it. And of course getting "followers" isn't important, just like "friends" on myspace means jack. “Things are as they are. That's what it's good at, that's all that it is. It has a lot of interesting uses, but for the average person, it's no more useful than facebook. If it's not for you, it's okay. I was just trying to say that it has it's uses.
LadyCrimson Posted April 18, 2009 Author Posted April 18, 2009 I was thinking about the "mainstream" issue ... isn't that going to be a potential problem with any 'net social network kind of thing? As soon as enough people hear about a thing/use it, it becomes too bloated to be attractive to the average person. Thus these things just feel like tech-fads that won't last. Programs like ICQ etc. seem better for friends/family. Some kind of central company-twitter might be interesting, where people could "follow" companies and comment/suggest in one place (but couldn't really talk to each other so much). That way I could keep up with a lot of company etc. news w/out having to check dozens of different sites and companies/the famous might reach more than just those who already know about them and go to company-specific fora, but...ah well, guess I'm just not into this social networking stuff. “Things are as they are. Morgoth Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Don't need it, don't use it. Rain makes everything better.

Yeah, there is a twitter-like thing for companies, I don't remember what it's called. It's an awesome solution to the typical email spam in you average office. That's what I meant by the "interesting uses" thing. There was a bunch fire stations that used it for coordinating training and stuff. As for the twitter vs. IM, I see it as public vs private. You use facebook to find people and see what they are doing without having to hit them up on phone/IM. You can talk to people on facebook etc. but I don't like it's public nature. I'm sure it's great for twitter to go "mainstream", but I don't like the people who only use something to be "cool", damn hipsters. Some time ago twitter pretty much only had the tech people on it and it was a bit of a community, now it's all over the place with spam and whatnot.
LadyCrimson Posted April 18, 2009 Author Posted April 18, 2009 Yeah, there is a twitter-like thing for companies, Oh? Is it public or just for them to use, if you know what I mean? If it's public, and you remember the name, I'd be interested in knowing what it is. “Things are as they are. Also: Yammer is a free service, but companies can claim their networks to get administrative rights and security features for one dollar per user per mont
